It has been eight years since the release of GTA V, and, while some think that’s a good thing, it has left the majority of the series’ fanbase scrolling forums and searching for any hints about the game’s long-anticipated follow-up.

Given how secretive Rockstar’s development process is, fans have been hanging on every word of every leak, regardless of how likely they are to be true. From there, they have been drawing up their own conclusions. Considering how dense the world of Grand Theft Auto is, it has led to some incredibly thought-out theories, but others that are ridiculous too.

As so many fans check for updates about any sliver of news or new rumors for the game every day, everything is up in the air, so gamers can only speculate about the game’s release date. The most spot-on theory, though, is that it may not release until 2025.

Given that Rockstar has milked GTA Online for years and there’s no sign of it slowing down, there’d be no point rushing the game when the last one still has millions of users. There are even rumors of a Red Dead Redemption remake being released beforehand, too, meaning that it could be longer than fans think.

9 No Chance: Based In London

It wouldn’t be the first time that a GTA game would be set in London, as GTA: London 1969 was released as an expansion for the original Grand Theft Auto game. But, that was all the way back when the game was nothing more than a top-down shooter. However, there’s one theory that the game will return to the city, which is based on the fact that Rockstar has said they want to base GTA outside of the US and that it could be based in multiple cities.

Yet, if Rockstar wants to expand on the epic scope of GTA V, which they surely do, there’s no way it’ll be set in London. London, though big, is a very confined city, with tight streets and very little room to do anything, which is one of the few criticisms of GTA IV.

Though Carcer City sounds like a parody of a real-life city similar to Liberty City and Vice City, most fans may not have heard of it despite being familiar sounding. Carcer City is the location where Manhunt takes place. Some fans have speculated that the sequel could take place in the fictional city due to how close it is to Liberty City, which is being rumored as a location in the game.

Not only that, but it’s confirmed that it exists in the same universe as GTA, as Michael mentions his first job being in Carcer City. Given how Manhunt is such a brutal game, Carcer City has just as violent of a reputation as any GTA location.

7 No Chance: Tommy Vercetti Is The Villain

Being the playable character in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Tommy Vercetti is one of the most beloved protagonists in the GTA series, which is why it makes it extremely unlikely that he’s the villain in GTA VI. The theory comes off the heels of rumors about GTA VI returning to Vice City.

Though the character is one of the most violent protagonists, it’d be hard to see him go all-out evil. But, as the character was famously voiced by Ray Liotta, it’d be great to see him reprise his role as the Vercetti.

6 Interesting: There Will Be No Online Mode

Given how the rerelease of GTA V for the PlayStation 5 doesn’t include GTA Online, the theory interestingly explains that there will be no GTA Online with the sixth game. The Redditor makes a good argument that there’s no point in having an online mode attached to the game when it already exists as a standalone.

Not only that, but the gameplay mechanics and the map for GTA VI will come as an update to GTA Online. If this is true, it’ll be interesting seeing a whole game that’s single-player, and it’d be the first of its kind in this generation.

5 No Chance: Companion Dogs

As many fans have surprisingly requested companion dogs, this theory mentions that there could be Animal Control-themed side missions, but it would be out of place in a Grand Theft Auto game, as the series’ USP is all about wreaking havoc, not wandering around as a dog looking for roadkill.

It’s easy to forget, but Rockstar dabbled in this before, as there was even a whole app fans could download that was a mini-game about Franklin’s dog, and it was one of the developer’s few failures.

4 Interesting: The Protagonist Is Sammy Bottino

Given how Rockstar likes to intertwine narratives and feature returning characters from time to time, it isn’t completely absurd to imagine that Sammy Bottino could be the playable character in GTA VI.

Again using the rumor that the game could be returning back to Liberty City as a jumping-off point, the theory comes from the fact that Bottino has a classic GTA-like origin story that could be explored. With GTA IV being the best Rockstar game according to Metacritic, Bottino would be a welcome addition to the upcoming game.

3 No Chance: Set In The 1980s

Though the past couple of games have been based in the present day, there is a theory that GTA VI will return to the 1980s, which was based on rumors about it being influenced by the Netflix original series Narcos.

This would also give credence to the fact that Sammy Bottino could be the protagonist of the game, as he was running the family and pulling racketeering jobs in the 80s. However, a recent job posting by Rockstar may have debunked the theory, as the job offer is aimed at animators to create media for the fictional Life Invader in-game phone app, meaning it’ll likely be set in the modern era.

2 Interesting: Announcements Will Be Made Via Scavenger Hunts In GTA Online

While fans are still convinced there’s an uncovered mystery surrounding Mount Chiliad, and it isn’t too surprising, as Rockstar have been known to include dozens of hidden secrets in their games.

It seems they have now taken to GTA Online to drop hints. In the game, they gave players the coordinates 38.527,-79.6129, and, if those are entered into Google Maps, it shows a winding dirt road that looks a lot like the Roman numerals for the number six. It’s now a theory that Rockstar will be dropping hints throughout Online in the coming months for a game that fans still know nothing about.

1 No Chance: It’ll Be Set In Virginia

Based on that same striking image of the dirt road, fans are reading the cryptic message in so many different ways. Some have been quick to theorize that the game will be set in Virginia, as that very road is in that state.

However, given how every GTA game has taken place in major metropolitan cities, it’s extremely unlikely that the game would be based in such a rural area. Even with it being a hint to GTA VI, that dirt track could very much be Rockstar just having fun at the expense of the fans, which they’ve been known to do in the past.
