Green Hell A Beginners Guide To Survival

Green Hell can be a grueling experience if beginners start the game blind without any kind of sense for survival. The island can be a deadly entity to take on, use this guide to help with overcoming mother nature’s wrath.

Released on August 29, 2018, by Creepy Jar S.A., Green Hell is a realistic survival simulation that puts players in the heart of the Amazonian jungle, with no memory on how they got there. Players are tasked with battling the harsh elements of the outdoors while slowly unraveling the mystery of their situation. While this was essentially a lone journey, there now has been a co-op feature implemented in the game on April 8, 2020. Now, players can venture into the unknown with their friends to help; hunt, fish, build and even remove leeches.

Being a unique take on the horror-survival genre, players will need to build up their arsenal from scratch by using the bare elements that nature provides. This could be either; stones, sticks, bones, animals, and plants. While everything starts in a fairly rudimentary fashion, things will increasingly become more complex as the game progresses. Therefore, it’s important to master the basics, first. This game is all about micro-managing what’s in the player’s inventory and the overall well-being of the character. Not only does this include tending to wounds (that can get infected), but also the mental stability of the character. This guide will help with getting started and building a solid foundation to increase the chances of facing the dangers that lurk within the woods.

What Beginners Need To Do To Survive Green Hell

Players will begin the game with an empty backpack, a notebook, and a smartwatch. The watch basically acts as a hud that tells the player the vital statistics of their character. The notebook is a hub that collects ‘crafting menus’ and updates on the game’s progression. As players continue the game, the notebook will automatically update with ‘bookmarks’ that players can use to jump to their desired information. Exposure to the jungle can be harsh and unforgiving and players will need to constantly gather whatever they can find so they can survive. Much like the inventory on Resident Evil, players can even “combine” ingredients and objects in order to form; recipes, tools, and weapons. By pressing a button, players will summon a ‘wheel menu’ that’s broken up in; backpack, notebook, crafting, and inspect categories.

Once players start the game, it’s important to think “small”. Gather little things like; stones, sticks, leaves, ash, and insects. Players will need to first build a crude camp base for themselves. Making a bed should be a top priority because sleep restores both health and sanity. So, the easiest bed to make is a simple ‘leaf bed’. Players can find out about this bed by looking into the “starter blueprint” category in their notebook. They will find that they will need to find ‘ten palm leaves.’ They’re easy enough to find by just exploring the jungle. Also, place the bed near a ‘small fire’, because it’ll decrease the risk of contracting worms. Also, a “simple shelter” will also need to be built, so players can save the game. Players can build one by gathering; twenty-six palm leaves, nine ropes, two logs, and six long sticks.

In order to build a small fire, the ‘crafting recipe’ is found in the ‘blueprint menu’ in the notebook. Players will see that they will need a ‘firestarter tool’ and ‘tinder’ to ignite a small fire. Generally, a fire-starting tool can be either a ‘hand drill’ or a ‘tribal firestarter.’ These tools can be either found or crafted by a collection of; large sticks, small sticks, and rope. Tinder can be collected by looking around the wilderness and finding; birds nest, dry leaves, or fibers. Once the fire is ignited, small sticks can be stacked on the fire to make it stronger. Fires are needed to cook foods, increase sanity, and have a light source during the night. Of course, fires also have a tendency to attract natives, as well.

The two types of weapons (or tools) players will be able to craft is the; spear, axe and bow, and arrows. To build the axe, players will need; a large stick, two stones, and rope. All these things can be found easily in the woods. To find a rope, collect vines that are hanging in trees by holding down the ‘interact’ button. Making a ‘bow and arrow’ is kind of the same. Find a long stick (or bamboo) and a rope. For the arrows, players will need to collect dead birds. They can be found near poison mushrooms, for example. Use the birds for feathers and collect sticks to forge arrows. Lastly, the spear can be both an essential hunting utensil and weapon. The best way to make one is by taking the axe, chopping down a small tree, and crafting it. Players will need a ‘stone blade’ by taking two rocks and “combine” them in the inventory menu. This will enable the character to rub the stones together to create the blade. Then, take a rope, a large stick and the new blade to craft the spear. Using all these tools and weapons will gradually increase their stats and will unlock upgraded crafting recipes.

Naturally, finding food is essential to keep the character strong enough to do things. The best things to start off with are; fruit, mushrooms, and green coconuts. Hit the coconuts with the axe and drink its milk and eat the pulp. The shells will be saved in the backpack by default. Coconut shells can be used to; boil contaminated water, make fusions and soups. Drinking coconuts are one of the best ways to stay hydrated, as well as drinking out of (clean) watering holes. Hunt animals by using the spear and bow. Players will need to consume protein on a regular basis to keep the physical and mental health stabilized. So, go for; fish, birds, reptiles, insects, and rodents to start off with. Once players have upgraded their arsenal, they can kill larger animals, and bones will be collected. The bones can be used for a variety of things, including being boiled into a broth that is highly nutritious. Also, meats need to be eaten as soon as possible, because they can spoil. So, always cook the meats before consuming them.

Be sure to keep track of the health stats of the character such as; carbs, fats, protein, and thirst. Studying the stats of all the food intake (and experimenting with what’s best to use) should be a regular practice. Using a spear to catch fish can be an excellent way to gather food and snare traps can help with catching smaller animals. Snare traps are crafted with; two logs, one long stick, two average sticks, eight small sticks, and eight ropes. These traps can be reused and can really help out. Also, be sure to get enough sleep, because if players don’t the character will develop insomnia.

Green Hell is garnering quite the following and it’s uber-realistic take on the survival genre provides a deep narrative. The organic gameplay invites players to poke around the green abyss for hours to discover what’s buried within. There’s a balance that needs to be respected that ranges from hunting, fighting, and personal hygiene. The more progress is made within this game, the richer the gameplay becomes. Experiment with resources and finding out different ways to best mother nature can be challenging, but also satisfying.
