Green Lanterns God in Red is Even Deadlier Than Marvels King in Black

Spoilers for Future State: Green Lantern #2 ahead!

The King in Black has cut a path of destruction across the Marvel Universe, laying waste to world after world and killing billions, but in the world of DC’s Future State, the God in Red may be even worse. In the feature story in Future State: Green Lantern #2, a squad of Green Lanterns confront the fanatical followers of the God in Red and learn of the horrors committed in his name. Written by Geoffrey Thorne with art by Tom Raney and colors by Mike Atiyeh, the issue is available in stores now and on all digital comic platforms.

Knull, aka the King in Black, is the symbiote god, a dark and evil being from before creation who wishes to restore the universe to the primordial darkness. This quest has led him to slaughter whole populations as well as enslave deities and Celestials. The God in Red, currently making life hell for the former Green Lanterns in Future State, is a mysterious being who has inspired a violent death cult that is threatening the galaxy. In this issue, fans learn not only the surprising identity of the God in Red, but also the depths of evil his followers have committed.

The Green Lanterns have lost the use of their power rings in Future State, but that does not stop former Lantern John Stewart and his allies from fighting the Khund – a warrior race razing the galaxy in the name of the God in Red. The God is revealed to be Orion of New Genesis, who has since transcended to another plane of existence. He returns to ours briefly to inform his “followers” that they have perverted his message. He tells them he is the “god of soldiers” and that soldiers end battles, not start them; the exact opposite of what his followers are doing. The leader believes this vision to be a trick, but he is quickly dispatched, and John Stewart takes command of the group after Orion states he’s a true soldier, ready to steer them in a more benevolent direction.

While the message of the God in Red has been corrupted, the King in Black is pure evil, yet the God in Red may still be worse. As Stewart prepares to show the vision of Orion, he speculates that the God in Red’s followers may have slaughtered billions, if not trillions. Most estimates put the King in Black’s body count in the low billions, which gives the God in Red a significant one-up on Knull. Though the King in Black is a being of true and pure evil, he met almost immediate resistance, while the followers of the God in Red have managed to roam free for far longer. Ironically, the followers who misunderstood their deity have done even more damage than the void made flesh.

It’s a tragic twist that only underscores the unnecessary loss of life so far, reflecting a deeper vision of what drives such fanatical behavior in the real world. Despite that, with Green Lantern John Stewart now at the helm of the God’s army, they will begin atoning for their sins, and the body count will stop. Meanwhile, if the King in Black continues on his current path, he will surpass the God in Red by extinguishing all of reality, cementing himself as the superior dark deity after all.
