Greenlights Matthew McConaugheys Favorite Roles Mentioned In His Memoir Ranked

Greenlights is Matthew McConaughey’s 2020 #1 New York Times best-selling memoir/self-help book, encapsulating the famed actor’s back-story and outlook on life while providing glimpses into his personal routines and methodologies. McConaughey’s recollection of various chapters of his acting career makes for one of the most intriguing sections of the book.

McConaughey uses a loose and playful writing style as he leads readers through his time working on his first movie Dazed and Confused all the way to his roles in recent, notable works like Mud and Dallas Buyers Club, the latter of which saw him win an Academy Award for Best Actor. McConaughey expresses mixed feelings about a few of his motion-pictures in Greenlights, but there are several he seems to love.

11 Reign Of Fire (2002)

Greenlights Matthew McConaugheys Favorite Roles Mentioned In His Memoir Ranked

McConaughey writes about the backlash he faced from an unnamed Hollywood executive, via a letter, after shaving his head before the filming of Reign Of Fire. The actor adds that the letter read: “If, in fact, it is true that you shaved your head, this would be a tragedy, a major misstep, and an act that may bring you very bad karma.”

McConaughey was upset by the letter but writes how it made him realize the cold, dog-eat-dog nature of Hollywood, and how relationships are dependent on his performance in the latest picture. Although he doesn’t say anything bad about the film, this experience seemed to stand out as a major negative in his overall career.

10 Killer Joe (2011)

Greenlights Matthew McConaugheys Favorite Roles Mentioned In His Memoir Ranked

The actor/author doesn’t get into much detail about his two 2011 films, Killer Joe and The Lincoln Lawyer, although they stand out as two notable projects in his filmography. The two films represented a comeback for McConaughey, who had been out of the industry for two years.

He attests his unlikely casting as the lead in the two projects to his “unbranded-ness” as an actor and his sudden reemergence. Audiences find McConaughey as an evil, brutal character in Killer Joe, unlike the good-guy-oriented roles he plays in the majority of his films.

9 Wedding Planner (1998)

McConaughey offers a brief anecdote on what it’s like to act in a romantic-comedy, writing that they’re “… engineered to be light, not lightweight, they are built for buoyancy and I learned to enjoy skipping from cloud to cloud as one needs to in order to keep these types of films afloat.”

Furthermore, he describes how a rom-com role contrasts with a dramatic role in that isn’t able to unleash any inner-humanity. Nonetheless, he appeared to enjoy the ease of acting in rom-coms and the generous pay that came with them. Still, he seems to hold his more serious roles in higher regard throughout Greenlights.

8 The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

McConaughey doesn’t give much background into the filming of The Lincoln Lawyer, the most pulse-pounding thriller/crime he’s been in. However, he does mention being the brand ambassador for Lincoln Motor Company.

In 2014, three years after his role in The Lincoln Lawyer, he inked his deal, which translated into a massive sales bump for the car company. He also mentions being the creative director for Wild Turkey Bourbon.

7 Interstellar (2014)

Interstellar and Christopher Nolan are the first film and director McConaughey glosses over when writing about his post-Academy Award days.

Many McConaughey and Nolan fans probably wish the actor/author went into more detail about his time making the universe-spanning film, such as the look of the set, demands of the cast and/or the tech used to produce such an astounding sci-fi film.

6 Fool’s Gold (2008)

McConaughey appears to favor this action/adventure/rom-com for personal reasons, as it’s one of his lowest-rated projects according to Rotten Tomatoes.

He writes about how he and his current wife, Camila Alves, had been dating for a year when he took the job and how he invited her to come and stay with him in Australia for three months during the shooting of Fool’s Gold. From there, he discusses their development as a couple while doling out some anecdotal relationship advice.

5 Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)

Although Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation was a sore sight for film critics everywhere, it’s one of McConaughey’s earliest movie roles. He was originally cast as the motorcycle-riding boyfriend until he spoke with the director about the lead role of the killer, Vilmer.

Kim Henkel agreed to let him try out for the part and the young McConaughey did an impromptu audition with a nearby secretary. He won the role. Although the film didn’t do great, it seemed to be a major catalyst for the actor/author’s “go-get-it” mentality.

4 Dazed And Confused (1993)

Greenlights Matthew McConaugheys Favorite Roles Mentioned In His Memoir Ranked

The first film set McConaughey ever stepped on was that of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. He played Wooderson, a 22-year-old “townie” who still hangs around his old high school crowd. Meanwhile, off the set, McConaughey was working at Catfish Station, an all-Black jazzbar.

McConaughey writes how his famous lines “alright, alright, alright” were both his first words on camera and improvised. He says people still yell these lines out to him to this day, but he briefly mentions how “people steal them,” as in other celebrities, such as Kevin Hart.

3 A Time To Kill (1996)

McConaughey spends a decent amount of time writing about A Time to Kill. He attributes his surge of fame to the emotionally raw performance as attorney Jake Tyler Brigance in the film based on the John Grisham novel.

The actor/author recollects the pressure of working alongside Sandra Bullock, who had just come off a box-office hit in her last film and became a “‘greenlight’ movie star.” Despite McConaughey’s relative anonymity at the time, the film still succeeded at the box-office, and his unhinged performance shot his name into the stars.

2 Mud (2012)

Greenlights Matthew McConaugheys Favorite Roles Mentioned In His Memoir Ranked

In Greenlights, McConaughey appears to have a profound connection to the film Mud, writing how filming it gave him a nostalgia for his childhood. He also writes, “If Mud had been released in 1979, my dad would have come to me and said, ‘Hey, buddy, there’s this movie called Mud I saw, we gotta watch it together, damn it’s a good one.'”

He’s rightfully proud of the Jeff Nichols indie drama, as it is quite a moving and spectacular picture that is endearing without sacrificing excitement.

1 Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

McConaughey includes a shocking picture of his body after losing a large amount of weight for the role of Ron Woodroof. Many fans don’t know that McConaughey had read the script for Dallas Buyers Club all the way back in 2007.

The odds were stacked against the team behind the film, who pulled the project off in 25 days on a budget of only $4.9 million. The tremendous risk and demands of what turned out to be a terrific film seem to be what makes Dallas Buyers Club McConaughey’s favorite.
