Gremlins 3 How To Make A Proper Sequel 20 Years Later

It’s been 20 years since the world has seen the mogwai, but Gremlins 3 plans to bring them back in a proper sequel. While this is an exciting opportunity for the movie series, a lot has changed since the last installment released, especially in the horror genre. As such, there are several things that Gremlins 3 must do to be successful.

Director Joe Dante brought the Gremlins to life in 1984, which was followed-up six years later with Gremlins 2: A New Batch. Both movies feature the mogwai named Gizmo, who was gifted to Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) as a Christmas gift. His care instructions are easy: don’t get him wet and don’t feed him after midnight. After water is spilt on Gizmo, he multiplies into dozens of mogwai, who go on a rampage through their once quiet town. The mogwai were notably inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1943 novel, The Gremlins. Dahl is known for his major contributions to the children’s horror sub-genre that include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Witches. With the success of the 1984 movie, Gremlins became an immediate cult classic and staple for holiday viewing.

No matter how far removed popular culture gets from the movie’s initial release, it continues to remain relevant, but mostly based on the nostalgia it evokes. The 1980s is one of the greatest eras for the horror genre, and has been the setting for several modern works such as The Final Girls and American Horror Story: 1984. While there may not be any solid plans for a third installment in the franchise, Joe Dante has a few ideas on how he could further the mythology and origins of the mogwai, but he must be attentive to the ever-changing trends in horror in order for it to be a success.

As of this writing, Dante has stated that he will not use CGI to make the mogwai, which is already one way that the sequel could succeed if it ever gets the green light. Gremlins 3 has the difficult task of appealing to new audiences as well as its original fanbase. While some movies, such as David Gordon Green’s Halloween, have accomplished such a feat, it might not be as easy considering the timelessness of the creature. The mogwai have not received nearly as much screen time as other horror movies that came from the 1980s, including Puppet Master and Friday the 13th, which could make it difficult to translate them to a modern audience.

Creature features aren’t as common anymore, but they’re steadily growing more popular after the success of movies like Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water. However, it will still be somewhat difficult to modernize Gremlins in some ways, as the movie needs to retain its childlike and comedic qualities. Gremlins 3 runs the risk of relying too heavily on past devices and amplifying them to the extent that it flops. In order to become a successful sequel, Dante must first decide if he intends on making Gremlins 3 explicitly horror or if it will be a horror-comedy like its predecessors. If it will be as dark and twisted as his original script intends, it should utilize Michael Dougherty’s demonic elves from 2015’s Krampus as a framework for the mogwai. They are childlike, but they also threaten horrific deaths. If Gremlins 3 chooses to go the route of the 1984 movie, it would be favorable for Dante to utilize Little Monsters’s way of capturing childlike imagination with real-life horrors lurking around every corner.

Gremlins 3 also has to be attentive to when it could release in order to truly capitalize on potential success, and strike when the iron’s hot. One thing is for certain: if Dante is going to make a third movie, now is the best time, as 1980s horror movies are at the height of their popularity in the 21st century.
