Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is often portrayed as one of the best medical institutions in America. Formed in 2013 by survivors of the plane crash, the hospital boasts some of the best medical professionals ever seen. However, the doctors aren’t normally as lucky as the patients since tragedy tends to strike them on a regular basis.
The main location of the series starts out as Seattle Grace Hospital before becoming Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital after its merger with Mercy West Medical Center. It’s eventually renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, a name that has stuck. While fans are familiar with the name changes, several other details about the hospital might have dodged even the most loyal of fans.
10 A Total Of Three Doctors Have Been Fired For Incompetence
The doctors that have been fired from the hospital include Dr. Eliza Minnick, Dr. Vikram “Vik” Roy, and Dr. Dahlia Qadri. Eliza was fired by Bailey after the hospital fire. Her crime? She didn’t inform the police that Stephanie was missing because she was too busy getting patients out of the building.
Vik was fired for neglecting a patient who had come in with a nosebleed. He left the patient unattended for five hours, leading to his death. Even more shocking, he refused to take responsibility for his actions. Dahlia was fired by Bailey for her confusion while handling one of Meredith’s patients.
9 The Hospital’s Phone Number
Since it’s one of the best hospitals in the world, there is obviously a high number of people trying to reach Grey Sloan Memorial. There must be thousands of daily inquiries about the services offered and the charges. But how can someone in the fictional world of the show contact the hospital?
Any person who intends to call the reception desk can dial (206) 555-6000. The number is seen on Meredith’s phone in Season 12 when she tries calling other doctors from home but no one is picking. She thus decides to call the reception.
8 There Are Five Floors
Being a Level I advanced trauma and teaching center, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is a very big facility consisting of five floors. Exterior shots of the hospital also prove how massive the hospital is.
The first floor houses the normal sections such as the registration desk, pharmacy, and the laboratory. The second floor houses the conference center and the clinical research center. The third floor houses the eye unit as well as the neurosurgery clinics. The fourth floor has the maternity, urology, neonatal, gynecologic and pediatric clinics while cancer patients are attended to on the fifth floor.
7 Badge IDs
There are a couple of details to note about the staff badges. For example, the badges of nurses never used to indicate whether they were registered or not but from Season 12, they show R.N (Registered Nurse). In an earlier season, the badges of Karev, Yang, and Avery used to simply state “Surgery” but are later updated to show their specialties such as “Pediatric Surgery” and “Cardiothoracic Surgery.”
Derek’s ID is the only one that consistently shows his specialty of Neurosurgery. Surgical intern IDs initially show “Surgery” but are updated to “Surgical Intern.”
6 CPR Training
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that normally comes in handy whenever there has been an accident, drowning, or stroke. Many victims whose hearts weren’t beating or whose breathing had stopped have been saved using this technique. Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital understands its importance too.
The hospital conducts free CPR training every first Tuesday of the month. The training not only covers the staff but also their friends and families. This detail is revealed in Season 14’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.”
5 The Address
The address of the hospital is 314 Barrington Ave., Seattle, Washington, 98103. The hospital is just across the stress from the doctor’s favorite hangout joint Emerald City Bar, which sits at 4397 Northeast Sequoia Avenue.
Grey Sloan’s exterior shots as seen in earlier seasons of the medical drama are actually that of VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center in Los Angeles. However, the exterior shots used from mid-Season 12 ate those of the West Los Angeles College.
4 2 Challenge Rule
The hospital has a “2-Challenge Rule.” This means that two surgeons are allowed to override a third surgeon’s actions and treatment plans in the OR when that particular surgeon appears to be making questionable decisions. The rule is rarely put into effect since most of the surgeons are competent.
The “2-Challenge Rule” is actually adopted from the aviation industry. In the cockpit, one pilot is required to assume the duties of another pilot if that pilot fails to respond appropriately to two consecutive challenges.
3 Grey Sloan Seven
According to Craniofacial Surgeon Dr. Lauren Boswell, the owners of the Grey Sloan (Meredith, Richard, Derek, Cristina, Callie, Arizona, and Jackson) are known as the “Grey Sloan Seven.” This term is rarely mentioned by anyone else in the series.
There are a few other owners who aren’t part of the Grey Sloan Seven. For example, Alex Karev becomes a shareholder after Cristina passes on her shares to him. Jo Wilson also becomes an owner when Alex gives her his shares and relocates to Kansas to be with Izzie. It can be assumed that only the original founders are part of the Grey Sloan Seven.
2 Fetal Cardiac Intervention
In Season 11, OB/GYN resident Dr. Graham Maddox mentions that Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is the best when it comes to fetal cardiac treatment. This is all thanks to the good work of Dr. Nicole Herman. When he first comes to the hospital, he compliments Nicole so much that she asks him to stop.
Even after Herman’s departure, the hospital remains a leader in fetal intervention because Herman had trained Arizona on the most effective procedures. Arizona is now the go-to surgeon for fetal surgery.
1 Organizational Structure
Given all the relationship and work drama that unfolds, it’s hard for the casual viewer to know how the hospital is structured. Jackson Avery and Meredith Grey serve as board directors. Meredith also serves as the chairperson. Other board members are Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber.
There are normal surgeons often referred to as Attendings. Then there are also fellows, residents, nurses, and interns. There are also medical doctors from other hospitals who have special privileges at Grey Sloan. They can access everything that normal staff is entitled to, including patient files and ORs.
