Long-running series Grey’s Anatomy has seen many great partnerships formed over the years. We had the pleasure of watching Jo and Meredith build a respectable work relationship; we watched as Team Neuro achieved the impossible by taking on critical cases; we even witnessed the Plastics Posse take Grey-Sloan Memorial by storm.

However, would everyone on the team be considered good friends? Not likely — especially if we’re talking about Mark and Jackson’s relationship. 10 Jackson Kept His Relationship With Lexie A Secret

In season 7, Jackson and Mark engaged in a romantic rivalry after the plastics attending discovered his protégé was dating Lexie. When Lexie and Mark broke up for the second time, she soon began to date Jackson after Mark inadvertently set them up.

Instead of telling Mark of their new budding relationship, Jackson and Lexie decide to keep it a secret. This turned out to be the worst idea as Mark realized they were an item when he spotted them sneaking off together. If he and Mark were good friends, Jackson would have respected Mark enough to be upfront with his feelings instead of blindsiding him.

9 Mark Interfered With Jackson’s Relationship

While Mark couldn’t change the fact that Lexie and Jackson were dating, he could have controlled the way he behaved. Instead of leaving them be, Mark ended up interfering and caused a little friction between the couple. For instance, in “I Will Survive,” Mark and Lexie shared a moment when the surgeon implied that he wanted her back.

In the season 7 finale, it looked like Mark was meddling again when he continued to check in on Lexie — despite saying he was letting go. He may not have liked the relationship but he also should have had enough respect for Jackson to allow him to be happy.

8 They Hardly Interacted In Jackson’s First Year

It’s probably the most obvious entry, but if you want to be friends with someone then you usually try and spend time with them. However, it appeared that Jackson and Mark weren’t interested in gaining new friends anytime soon when they hardly interacted at all in Jackson’s first year.

When Jackson first arrived, he kept to his old social circle, which was usually Pierce, April, and Reed. He also affiliated with some of the Seattle Grace residents; he just never tried to become friends with his boss. Same went for Mark — he didn’t try getting to know the new residents unless he had too.

7 Jackson’s Behavior During Callie’s Car Crash

One of the reasons why fans love Jackson is because he is usually a kind, compassionate friend. However, he was anything but in “Song Beneath the Song” when he became jealous after Lexie comforted Mark. In this episode, Mark discovered that Callie, their unborn baby, and Arizona had been involved in a car crash.

Since Derek was operating on Callie, Webber asked Lexie to go keep an eye on Mark. When Lexie tells Jackson that she was going to stay with Mark for the night, he looked a little disappointed. Later in the episode, Jackson also questioned Lexie about whether she was still in love with Mark. He doesn’t look like he remotely cares about Mark’s well-being, which proves they aren’t friends.

6 Mark Allowed Their Feud To Affect Them Professionally

Jackson and Mark’s relationship may have developed a lot in season 8 but that doesn’t mean it was smooth sailing. In “Free Falling,” Jackson approached Mark and let him know that he had an interest in Plastics. However, the attending refuses to teach him because he doesn’t think he has what it takes.

It was clear that Mark is still harboring a grudge after finding out Jackson was dating his ex, but it was something he would have had to get over. A good friend would let these sorts of grudges go and be supportive. However, since Mark refused to help Jackson advance his career, they could only be seen as rivals.

5 Jackson Didn’t Care About Mark’s Personal Life

Another reason why Jackson and Mark aren’t good friends is the fact that Jackson doesn’t care about Mark’s happiness. In season 8, Jackson broke up with Lexie after he realized the neuro resident was still in love with his mentor. However, this didn’t mean he wanted to see her with Mark.

Jackson was well aware of Lexie’s feelings for Mark, and some part of him knew the plastics attending had residual feelings for her too. Yet, when Lexie turned up at Mark’s apartment in “All You Need Is Love,” did he make himself scarce? Nope. If he cared about Mark, Jackson would let him know where Lexie stood so he could have a chance to make a definitive decision on his happiness.

4 Mark Didn’t Believe In Jackson

In “She’s Gone,” Bailey arranged for the fifth year residents to partake in the Gunther exercise to rebuild their confidence. While the residents were in the operating room, several of the attendings were placing bets in the gallery on who they thought would step up.

Instead of supporting his protégé, Mark is the first one to rule out Jackson, calling him useless and a coward. What’s even worse is that Mark only acknowledges Jackson as his guy when he does something right. If this is how Mark treats his friends, then who needs enemies?

3 Jackson Doesn’t Believe They Are Friends

Another reason why Mark and Jackson cannot be considered friends is because Jackson said they weren’t. In “What is it About Men,” Jackson and Mark got into a fight when the plastics attending refused to let Jackson take control of certain cases.

As a result, he goes and helps Derek build his deck. Whilst he is there, Jackson begins to vent his frustrations to Derek about Mark and how he won’t teach him properly. He then apologizes, saying he knows that Mark “was his boss and Derek’s friend.” The fact that he referred to him as “Derek’s friend” proves he felt like they were just working acquaintances.

2 Mark’s Loyalty To Derek

Mark may have taken Jackson under his wing but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t drop him if he offended one of his loved ones. In “What is it About Men,” Mark confronted Derek about him trying to steal Jackson from his service.

However, his anger soon turned toward Jackson when he realized his mentee had been using his “boy” for neuro hours. The fact that Mark calls Derek “his boy” proves no one would be able to break the unwavering loyalty he has towards his childhood best friend. If it came down to it, Mark would have no qualms in choosing Derek over Jackson.

1 Never Hung Out Outside A Work Capacity

Jackson and Mark may have been one of the best professional partnerships to grace Grey-Sloan Memorial but personally, not so much. For one, they were only ever seen to hang out in a work capacity. In “All You Need Is Love,” Jackson only turned up at Mark’s apartment because he needed help studying for his Boards.

Fans also never saw them share a drink at Joe’s. It could have been excused in Jackson’s first year since everything was relatively new but even after a few years, they never seemed to want to be friends. Work acquaintances were all Jackson and Mark would ever be.
