When Mark Sloan first came to Seattle, he was depicted as a womanizing jerk. However, he managed to change the fans’ opinions as the seasons went on.

Mark Sloan was introduced to the Grey’s Anatomy universe in Season 2. By the time of his departure in season 9, Mark had changed radically from being just arm candy to someone who was genuinely beloved and missed.

Mark grew up a lot on the show and he was one of those characters who really developed as a character. Not only did he become one of the best father’s on the show, but he made deliberate attempts to become better friend and mentor. He was also very invested in making amends with the people he wronged – whether that be through his womanizing ways or schemes. Here are some of the ways in which he managed to do just that.

10 Falling In Love With Addison

What Mark had with Addison wasn’t just a fling. They had fallen in love with each other and were living together. Addison even got pregnant during this time, though she decided against keeping it. His relationship with Addison was his first step towards something more serious in the romance side of things in his life.

9 Making Amends With Derek

He decides to stay in Seattle – in spite of Addison thwarting his plans – because he wanted to fix things with Derek. He had grown up with Derek, and he was his best friend. Mark knew that he had deeply hurt Derek with their affair and so wanted to stick around in Seattle to make amends. He wanted his friend back and was asking for forgiveness from him. This clearly showed that Sloan was repenting for his actions.

8 Bromance With Derek

After they sorted out their differences, they once again quickly became friends. Mark did his best to let Derek that he could be relied on and that the neurosurgeon had his unwarranted loyalty. They had a very cute bromance filled with humor, laughter, and constant sniping.

But the return of the brotherhood dynamic between the two of them showed the extent to which Mark was able to show Derek that he was a good man.

7 Little Grey Love Story

Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan were one of the cutest couples on the show. Mark loved Lexie and respected her as well. He listened to what she had to say and tried his best to make himself worthy of her as well. Even though they had a couple of rough patches in their relationship, Mark’s maturity came very clearly through in terms of him wanting Lexie to always be happy.

6 Wanting To Be In A Serious Relationship

It was quite the comedy of errors when Arizona and Callie gave wrong information to both Teddy and Mark regarding what the other was looking for in a relationship. While Teddy was just looking to have fun, Mark wanted to date very seriously. He wanted to take her out for lunch, and have conversations with her, and so on. This shows how much Mark’s idea of a romance had changed.

5 Attempting To Be Better Always

Mark always made efforts to be better in every way possible. Although he slipped and did make mistakes every once in a while, he was very genuine in wanting to be and do better in his life. He wanted to be someone who people respect and someone who respected himself as well.

And even though he rushed into a couple of things too soon, it was always well-intentioned. While in his early appearances he was quite mean to the interns, he later became someone who was never intentionally cruel or mean.

4 Wanting Mrs. Shepherd’s Approval

Mark’s parents weren’t around a lot when he was younger. So he mostly always hung out with Derek and his family. Mrs. Shepherd was therefore like a mother to him and it was very important that he had her validation.

When he was dating Lexie, he tried to avoid Mrs. Shepherd because he thought she’d disapprove. But the opposite happened, and his respect and love for her made him so much more endearing to fans.

3 His Friendship With Callie

When Callie was at her lowest, Mark helped her up. He was her rock, her support system, and her best friend even. Callie relied on Mark for many things, and Sloan was quite happy to provide her with some comfort.

He also helped her get back into the dating scene, telling her that she should be proud that she had put herself out there, even if she had got her heart broken. He was incredibly mature in his dealings with her and their friendship was incredibly cute and fun as well.

2 Being An Amazing Teacher

Mark was repeatedly reprimanded when he used his interns to primarily get coffee for him and to run his errands. But once he decided to become a teacher, he started taking the job very seriously. He was Jackson’s mentor and was incredibly supportive of him in every way.

When Jackson was drifting away from Plastics slightly, Mark took it very personally as well. He was a very dedicated teacher, and the fact that Jackson wanted to be a Sloan for someone else shows how remarkable his influence was.

1 Being An Amazing Dad To Sofia

It is quite sad that audiences didn’t get to see enough of Mark’s amazing parenting skills. However, what little was shown proved what an amazing dad he was. Mark managed to work out a parenting routine along with Arizona and Callie and was an incredibly responsible and sensitive parent. His journey from being McSteamy to this incredible dad showed the immense growth of this character.
