Cristina and Meredith had a sweet friendship, and once Meredith became an intern, she began letting other people into her life.

She had always been a super strong person who was a bit of a loner, and she knew she could rely on herself. But, it took a lot for Meredith to realize that she could rely on other people, too, and after assembling her crew of Cristina, George, Izzie, and Alex, Meredith became a better, more open, and more vulnerable person. This definitely helped her become a better doctor, too.

Fans loved when Cristina told Meredith that Derek wasn’t the sun and that she could shine and be who she wanted to be. After this moment, something shifted in Meredith and she approached her relationship in a new way.

She still loved Derek but she knew that she had wants and needs. While he was spending too much time away from home working for the president, she let him know that it was her turn to focus on her job and that he had to make more sacrifices.

After Derek died, it would have made sense if Meredith had decided that she didn’t want to date anymore. For a while, she had a difficult time re-entering the dating world, which made total sense.

But, Meredith was open-minded after her loss and even started working with Cece the matchmaker after she became a patient at the hospital. This allowed her character to become even better, as she showed that she could be vulnerable and strong at the same time.

When Thatcher was dying, Meredith knew that it felt right to say goodbye properly, and she made a kind of peace with him. This was very mature of Meredith and showed some character growth, as she was once so angry at him that she couldn’t even look at him.

Meredith definitely had a right to be wary about Penny as she was the doctor who couldn’t save Derek. Penny knew that she made massive mistakes, and she found it hard to live with that knowledge, so she was suffering, too.

Meredith proved she became a better character as she was able to forgive Penny. Of course, she would never forget the pain that Derek’s death caused her and how different her future would be as a result, but she was able to see Penny as a fellow doctor and human being, and that was a huge deal.

1 She Never Let Anything Stop Her

It’s pretty amazing to think about everything that Meredith has gotten past. She not only lost Derek but DeLuca, too, and she has had to say goodbye to her closest pals and many co-workers over the years.

While Meredith can be harsh at times, she’s ambitious and she has learned to never let anything stop her. This proves that she has gotten better and better, as she has had many excuses to throw in the towel and stop trying so hard to make her dreams come true and help other people. But, Meredith will never give up and that’s why viewers appreciate her.
