After Derek Shepherd’s death, it seemed like Meredith had lost the love of her life. With Meredith finding it hard to move on from the neurosurgeon, the writers of Grey’s Anatomy decided to have her focus on her career. Slowly but surely, Meredith has allowed herself to be open to new possibilities and new people. Andrew DeLuca and Cormac Hayes are two such people who are currently in different stages of romantic entanglement with Meredith.
DeLuca and Meredith used to be together, but now their relationship is quite ambiguous since their physical and mental health has declined. Meredith and Hayes just recently met each other, but there seem to be sparks between them. It’s still up in the air about whether the writers will go down this path. But if they did, would fans be happy? Or do they feel that DeLuca is the better match?
10 DeLuca: Willing To Go To Prison For Her
Andrew didn’t even skip a beat before taking the blame for what Meredith had done. He knew that Meredith had kids, and had done the insurance fraud only for the sake of a patient who really needed it.
So he took the fall for her, even though it meant that he’d be arrested and sent to jail. Even when Meredith got him out, he made sure to look after her patients and her kids in her absence from the hospital.
9 Hayes: Her Equal
Hayes is also the head of a department, like Meredith. He is older, more mature, and a highly-skilled professional in his field of pediatric surgery. Hayes was an equal to Meredith in all respects, personally and professionally. This makes him a perfect partner for Meredith. He is someone at her level, who she would respect as well.
8 DeLuca: Pursued Meredith
DeLuca first kissed Meredith at Alex and Jo’s wedding. And then he continued to pursue her, especially when Jo tried to set Meredith up with Link. DeLuca made deliberate efforts and won Meredith over.
He was sweet, and they had really good chemistry between them. The scenes where they speak in Italian, and the ones in the elevator and terrace attest to this fact.
7 Hayes: Has Kids, Like Her
Meredith has three kids of different ages. Not everyone will be able to understand a single mother’s priorities or deal with her children.
But Hayes has kids of his own. And he is a single dad as well. So he is sure to understand Meredith’s priorities because he can surely and closely relate to them as well.
6 DeLuca: They Had A Good Relationship
Meredith and DeLuca have quite a nice relationship. Meredith even introduces him to her kids, and counts on him to take care of them when she’s away and such. They genuinely care about each other, and love each other as well.
While it is unsure where they are right now in terms of their relationship, the genuine affection and love they share has not gone away one bit.
5 Hayes: Cristina Approved
Hayes was literally hand-picked and sent to Meredith as a gift. Cristina had worked with Hayes and knew his story and thought he would be perfect for Meredith.
She even dubbed him McWidow, a nice throwback to her earlier nickname for Derek which was McDreamy. And Cristina’s approval means a lot to Meredith so that definitely is a lot in Hayes’ favor.
4 DeLuca: Was An Intern When They Met
Grey’s does a nice throwback to the original romance of Meredith and Derek when Meredith was an intern, and Derek was an attending. The tables are turned here as DeLuca is the intern/resident, and Meredith is the attending now. The power dynamics are very visible but DeLuca and Meredith really work well together, like Meredith and Derek used to.
3 Hayes: Truly Understands The Tragedy Of Losing A Spouse
Meredith had lost the love of her life in an accident. Hayes had lost the love of his life, and the mother of his children to cancer. He knew exactly what it felt like to lose someone you thought you would spend the rest of your life with.
He, therefore, understands Meredith’s pain and her held-back love more than anyone else possibly could. He understands how even when they are good for each other, they will never replace the ones they lost.
2 DeLuca: He’s Looking After Himself Now
Andrew went through a bit of a rough spot with his mental illness in season 16 and distanced himself from Meredith. But he seems to be so much better in season 17, and he’s taking care of himself very well.
He’s become an attending, a better person, and so much more in control of himself. He seems ready to step up and be with Meredith again.
1 Hayes: Sparks Fly
While they haven’t gotten an opportunity to relax and just be themselves, there are clearly sparks flying between both of them. They were supposed to get a drink together, but with the pandemic and Meredith falling sick, it never happened.
But there’s definitely good chemistry between them and Hayes does make a lot of effort to interact with Meredith ever since she’s been isolated as well.
