With its fifteenth season, Grey’s Anatomy officially became the longest-running medical drama on network television. Grey’s Anatomy is the mothership of Shondaland Productions. While other Shondaland shows have indeed been successful, such as How To Gey Away With Murder, Scandal, and Private Practice, none lasted as long as Grey’s Anatomy. The show has held crossovers with Private Practice, and its firefighter spin-off, Station 19.

It is uncertain if the line of Shondaland Productions shows that followed Grey’s Anatomy would have come to fruition had Grey’s Anatomy not done as well as it had. Each season brought something new to the show, and it has evolved so much from the first season that it is nearly a completely different show in its seventeenth. Viewers have clearly liked some seasons better than others as every season has been ranked by the Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score.

The rankings of the initial top ten seasons have been changed to reflect their current ratings, while the remainder of the seasons have been added to give a complete picture of the show. Here’s how the Tomatometer scores break down for all of Grey’s Anatomy so far.

18 Entire Show: 77%

Grey’s Anatomy has taken several chances throughout its run from emotional, heart-wrenching storylines to its lesser loved musical episode. Overall, nothing has stopped Grey’s Anatomy’s continuing success.

The characters are too dynamic, and the storylines too emotional for the series to just conclude. This is a show where the least favorite characters can become the most loved character. However, it is also a series where fans have seen their preferred doctors and patients tragically die or leave. Yet, it is also a show that can make fans cry with happiness during a beautiful gesture.

17 Season 17: 26%

The seventeenth season of Grey’s Anatomy has been polarizing for fans. It holds the lowest Rotten Tomatoes audience score by a wide margin. Some fans dislike that it brought the reality of 2020’s COVID-19 outbreak into the show, while others praised it for adding more realism to the drama.

Much of the focus is on how the hospital deals with the safety measure in place as a result of the pandemic. Meredith, the main character since the pilot episode, even contracts the virus, and her dreams while unconscious bring back a handful of fan-favorite characters that have long departed the show.

16 Season 16: 66%

With a whole lot of changes for the main characters in the sixteenth season, some fans were left reeling, and the audience score certainly reflects that. It marks the last season for fan-favorite Alex Karev, which also left a lot of the audience divided.

Meredith, after admitting to insurance fraud, has to defend her medical license for much of the season. She also has to deal with losing one of her best friends (again) as Alex abruptly leaves Seattle and doesn’t explain himself for months. In addition to their storylines, mental health takes a spotlight as Jo and DeLuca deal with their respective issues. Amelia also becomes a mom, expanding the show’s large family.

15 Season 15: 69%

Alex gets a big promotion as Bailey picks him to be interim Chief in her absence. The promotion places some stress on his and Jo’s relationship as relationships really take center stage in this season.

Amelia and Owen adjust to having foster children in their house while Meredith has to figure out how to talk to her kids about the possibility of dating again. That is after Meredith figures out if she’s even ready to date again. The fifteenth season also features the powerful episode, “Silent All These Years,” which focuses on sexual assault survivors and gives the audience a lot more backstory for Jo.

14 Season 13: 72%

Like many of Grey’s Anatomy seasons, this one focuses on change. Most of the upheaval, however, is focused on the professional lives of the doctors and medical students instead of their personal lives.

The teaching program at the hospital undergoes a major revamp. That includes the introduction of consultant Eliza Minnick, but it also creates a lot of tense situations for the characters. Plenty of the veteran characters are resistant to change. Alex also has to deal with the repercussions of his attack on Andrew, Owen gets news about his long-missing sister, and Meredith has to revisit the feelings brought up by the plane crash that killed her sister.

13 Season 14: 74%

Though Shonda Rhimes had stepped down as showrunner before the fourteenth season, this season marked the first time she truly stepped away from the show. William Harper and Krista Vernoff became co-showrunners and Rhimes no longer had to sign off on the storylines for the season.

The season sees a few cast shakeups as three series regulars say goodbye to the show. Arizona, Nathan, and April all have their last story arcs in this season. Several characters also get large dramatic storylines as Meredith finds herself in the middle of another love triangle, multiple characters deal with drama with their sisters, and Amelia discovers she has a brain tumor.

12 Season 8: 78%

Much like she has to fight for her medical license in later seasons, Meredith again has to deal with the fallout of a decision made at work. In this case, it’s her tampering with a medical trial in the seventh season. Alex also has to deal with the fallout as he’s the one who turns her in. It leads to a divide between the two of them, but also a divide between Alex and several other coworkers.

This season also features the stand out episodes “If/Only” and “Flight.” The former sees Meredith imagine an alternate universe while the latter is the fallout of the plane crash that shakes up the dynamic of the show moving forward.

11 Season 4: 80%

With all the original interns other than George passing their exam, they have moved up to Residents while George remains a second-year intern.

George staying back a level connects him to the new batch of interns at Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital, one of which is Lexie Grey. Meredith’s half-sister Lexie starts as an intern wishing to create a bond with Meredith. Yet, her wishes do not get the desired effect. It takes time for Meredith to warm up to Lexie, and beforehand they do not have the most cordial relationship.

10 Season 7: 80%

After the events of the sixth season, all of the characters have to deal with the trauma of experiencing a shooting at the hospital. That leads to some characters to jump into new relationships and others to take a little longer to adjust to their new normal.

When Meredith discovers that Richard’s wife might have Alzheimer’s, she tampers with a trial to help Adele, leading her into serious trouble when Alex turns her in. Meredith, in her anger, kicks Alex out of her house, and Derek even leaves her for a while as everyone is also forced to deal with the repercussions of her actions.

9 Season 12: 82%

When Cristina Yang left, Alex Karev took up her role as Meredith’s person. With Derek gone as well, Alex stepped up to be Meredith’s primary source of comfort. This was most notable during “The Sound of Silence.” Meredith Grey was never a lucky person as those around her tended to leave or die. But, there were plenty of times that Meredith got the short end of the stick also.

In “The Sound of Silence,” a patient wakes up and attacks Meredith, causing her to need several doctors surrounding her. Throughout it all, Alex Karev stays by Meredith’s side as she gets better. The episode is the highest-rated of the season, according to IMDb. The season finale includes Amelia and Owen’s wedding and the birth of April and Jackson’s child.

8 Season 10: 82%

Throughout the years, fans realized that their favorite characters would come and go. Unfortunately for those who loved Cristina Yang, that time came at the end of season ten. When Cristina realized that staying at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital would not allow her to progress her career the way she would like, Preston Burke gives Cristina an unexpected out.

Although every season of Grey’s Anatomy is filled with emotional episodes, season ten may likely be remembered most for saying good-bye to Cristina Yang. Luckily, Cristina got a well-deserved exit, unlike several other characters. Cristina’s conclusion saw her taking over Burke’s hospital in Switzerland. Although she has not made an appearance since then, fans have gotten to see her and Meredith have text conversations later on.

7 Season 1: 83%

The first time anyone meets the original group of interns and their superiors held the foundation for over a decade of successful television. The original interns were ready for any possibility of getting in on a surgery and were always excited about the more bizarre operations they would have to perform.

The first season set the beginning of the show’s most prominent romance between Meredith and Derek, giving one last plot twist in the season finale when Meredith, and the audience, discovered that Derek was married. It was also a point in the series when Miranda Bailey was the tough resident, and Alex Karev still had a lot of growing up to do.

6 Season 11: 84%

Cristina Yang’s exit in season ten was followed by Derek Shepherd’s in season eleven. After all the highs and lows of Meredith and Derek’s relationship, it concluded after a car accident in “How To Save A Life.” However, Derek did not leave Meredith behind without one last unexpected present. After Derek’s death, Meredith ran away with Zola and Bailey, leaving her friends concerned and worried in her wake. Only nearly a year after leaving do the audience discover what Meredith had been hiding. When Alex reaches Meredith at a hospital as her emergency contact, Meredith reveals she had a third baby, her and Derek’s daughter, Ellis.

Season eleven also reveals that the new Head of Cardio, Maggie Pierce, is Meredith Grey’s half-sister, the daughter of Ellis Grey and Richard Webber.

5 Season 3: 85%

A boat crash eventually leads to Meredith Grey almost drowning. The third season is the last the original interns all spend together as interns. It also is the last season to feature Addison Montgomery as a central character, as she departs the show to lead Private Practice, Grey’s Anatomy’s first spin-off series.

Among the events of the third season, one that affected Meredith so much was the death of her mother, Ellis. Season three is also the last that Preston Burke appears as a central character, as he abruptly leaves Seattle minutes before he and Cristina are meant to get married.

4 Season 6: 85%

A season after losing George O’Malley, Izzie Stevens abandoned Alex Karev and her friends in Seattle to settle down elsewhere. However, that was not the only conflict throughout the sixth season. Jackson Avery and April Kepner join the hospital when Seattle Grace merges with Mercy West, creating competition amongst the doctors to keep their jobs through the merge.

The doctors of Seattle Grace are still grieving from George’s death and trying to move forward. Season six also has one of the most emotional season finales throughout the series, as an armed man walks the halls of the hospital.

3 Season 5: 86%

Season five features the first primary loss of the show. Just after deciding to join the military, George O’Malley saves a woman’s life by pushing her out of the way of an oncoming bus. It is not until late in the season finale that Meredith discovers that the John Doe they have been treating was George.

As George is dying, Izzie is fighting for her life as well. Season five also features the beginning of the romantic relationship between Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins, and the introduction of Owen Hunt. Season five may also be remembered for the return of Denny Duquette as a ghost.

2 Season 9: 86%

In the aftermath of the plane crash in season eight, everyone struggles to return to normal. Cristina leaves Seattle to get away from Seattle Grace Mercy West, while everyone else stays behind. Lexie and Mark’s deaths leave everyone grieving, and Meredith has been named “Medusa” by the new batch of interns, including Jo Wilson.

Although Cristina returns to Seattle Grace Mercy West later, as Attendings, there are more responsibilities. The episode also features flashbacks and PTSD in the aftermath of returning home after the plane crash at the end of season eight.

1 Season 2: 88%

Season two is an epic one for Grey’s Anatomy. Not only does the season feature a bomb on the cusp of exploding, but it is also the season of the infamous LVAD wire scene. Romances are not the only thing afoot in Seattle Grace as patients come in with more and more bizarre circumstances.

Season two also includes two patients stuck together by one pole in the aftermath of a train accident. Grey’s Anatomy was known for its crazy operations and surgeries around patients, and season two likely has the most memorable episodes. Years later, there are still references to the LVAD wire in seasons of Grey’s Anatomy.
