Greys Anatomy All The Times A Doctor Was Fired

More often than not, the ax tends to fall on a doctor in Grey’s Anatomy. Whether it’s due to negligence, incompetence or cut downs, a major character loses their job about once every two seasons. The rate at which doctors lose their jobs is almost similar to the rate at which they resign. A number of doctors have decided to step out on their own terms too.

Luckily, in the long-running medical drama, unemployment isn’t forever. Most of the doctors who get fired get rehired quite quickly or land a job elsewhere. They are the best doctors in the world after all, and staying unemployed for too long wouldn’t make sense. While some job loss incidents have been painful, others have been understandable, given the circumstances.

10 Meredith

Meredith was fired twice, first for tampering with Derek’s Alzheimer’s trial and then for insurance fraud. The first time she got fired, she and Derek were trying to adopt Zola. Her dismissal almost cost them the adoption since the officer investigating their suitability as parents learned about what had transpired.

During the insurance fraud case, Alex, Richard, and Andrew all tried to help her but they ended up in trouble too. Though there was a real threat of Meredith losing her license and going to prison, she survived it all and managed to come back to work.

9 Dahlia Qadri

Dahlia became disgruntled after Meredith’s dismissal. She and Jo found themselves in a dilemma after Shirley Gregory, the patient they were working on, insisted on being operated on by Meredith. Jo thus came up with the idea to video call Meredith during the surgery so that she could assist.

After the surgery, Bailey found Dahlia crying and upon asking her what the problem was, she aired out her frustrations regarding Meredith’s dismissal. She explained that Meredith was the reason she came to the Grey Sloan and that she wanted to learn from her, not just watch her from a TV screen. Instead of sympathizing with her, Bailey fired her, telling her that she and Meredith had something in common now.

8 Eliza Minnick

Eliza was brought in to revamp the surgical residency program, but she ended up getting fired for a mistake that wasn’t related to her job description. After an oxygen tank explosion caused a fire at the hospital, Jackson instructed Eliza to tell the police that Stephanie was missing. However, Eliza forgot to do so since she was preoccupied with getting the patients out of the building.

Though she did her best to defend herself, Bailey fired her, claiming the hospital didn’t need robots who only followed protocols and couldn’t make alternative decisions. After being dismissed, she moved out of her apartment with Arizona and refused to talk to her.

7 Leah Murphy

Leah openly admitted that she got into the surgical program easily because of Mark Sloan, who had been romantically involved with her mother. However, she had a hard time in the OR and she eventually got dismissed by Richard. The worst thing about Leah’s dismissal was that she had already heard rumors that someone was going to get fired.

Worried it might be her, she began stress-eating. Her fears were confirmed when Richard called her aside and told her that she was a good doctor but not a good surgeon. Luckily, she managed to redeem herself. Leah went on to work at Forster Hospital where she improved her skills significantly. She was then rehired at Grey Sloan.

6 Vikram “Vik” Roy

Vik’s dismissal was perhaps the most justified. When a patient named Tad came to the hospital with a nosebleed, Vik assumed it was nothing serious. He parked him in a bed and promised to come and check on him later. Vik didn’t check on him until 5 hours had passed and when he came back, the patient was coughing up blood.

Koracick stepped in to help and was shocked to find out that Vik hadn’t ordered any tests. Despite their best efforts, the patient died. And when Koracick asked Vik to call the time of death, he refused, claiming the responsibility wasn’t his. What’s funnier is that Vik thought Alex was giving him a day off when he told him not to come in the next day. In reality, he was getting fired.

5 Teddy Altman

Unlike other firings, this one was linked to the bigger picture. As the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Seattle Grace Mercy West, Teddy did a good job of mentoring Cristina during the final years of her residency. She also worked on a research project involving stem cell regenerative heart medicine. This research drew the attention of the US Army Medical Command (MEDCOM).

MEDCOM approached her and offered her a job as Chief Of Staff. However, she was reluctant to go. Knowing it was too good an opportunity to turn down, Owen decided to fire her so that she would have no choice but to take the job. Cristina realized what Owen had just done and thanked him for it.

4 Izzie

Dr. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens went through the worst stages of her cancer but just as she was looking forward to a brighter future, she got fired during Seattle Grace’s merger with Mercy West. Other doctors believed that she still needed to stay at home since work would put unnecessary stress on her. Izzie took this personally, believing it was all Alex’s fall.

She later came back to Seattle and Derek promised to rehire her if he was made Chief. Unfortunately, she couldn’t stand it when Alex told her he wanted something new. Izzie could also have been fired earlier in the series when she cut the LVAD wire. Luckily, she was only put on probation for this.

3 Megan Nowland

Megan started out as one of Meredith’s interns before becoming a resident at Seattle Grace. She was keen on being a pediatric surgeon but soon found herself among the doctors who were dismissed during the merger with Mercy West. Even worse, she wasn’t told the news face to face. She knew about it through an email notification.

Angry, she opted to sue for wrongful termination. Megan believed her pregnancy was a factor in her dismissal, as opposed to cost-cutting. Fighting for what you believe is right helps sometimes and Megan eventually got her job back after Derek Shepherd was promoted Chief of Surgery. Even better, he promised her that she wouldn’t be dismissed even if there were other cutbacks.

2 Alex Karev

Alex recently came close to losing his job at Grey Sloan when he assaulted Andrew. While his job at the popular hospital has mostly been secure, he had to bear with being fired from another medical center. At one point, he temporarily quit his job at Grey Sloan and joined the Lebackes Pediatric Surgery Clinic in order to make more money so he could pay off his college debts.

Sadly, Maggie Pierce accidentally messed this when she walked into an OR and mentioned that there were plans to make Alex a member of the board. Upon hearing this, Oliver Lebackes fired him with immediate effect. Luckily, the doors were still open at Grey Sloan and he was taken back as an attending pediatric surgeon.

1 April Kepner

April was first fired during the incident in which a hotel fire brought hundreds into the ER. April forgot to check for soot in a patient’s airway and the situation eventually turned tragic. After all the doctors were interrogated, April was found guilty of negligence and fired.

Though not technically a firing, Seattle Grace refused to give her a permanent job after she failed her board exams in another incident. No other hospital was willing to take her either so she moved back to her parents’ farm. Owen would later come to get her and take her back to the hospital.
