With each new season of the hit primetime medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, comes new drama and a couple of new cast members. Season five introduced us to fan favorites like Dr. Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd, and Dr. Arizona Robbins, played by Jessica Capshaw.

Season five has become one of the most memorable seasons of the entire television series, thanks to a couple of shocking storylines, including Izzie being diagnosed with cancer and the unexpected death of a character who had been an audience favorite since the very beginning of the series, during the season finale.

10 An Honest Mistake (8.8)

Derek and Meredith’s relationship has been back on track for a while, and Derek has plans to propose. Those plans are put on hold when Addison returns to Seattle Grace to treat a pregnant patient with Derek. Derek starts to question his abilities under the pressure Addison puts on him. Meanwhile, Izzie is confronted by a patient who she gave a cancer diagnosis to earlier.

The patient comes back to tell Izzie that she doesn’t have cancer, she’s anemic, and the hospital messed up her diagnosis. She tells Izzie she wants to make sure the person who does have cancer knows it. Izzie goes to her own medical records and reveals she had tests done on the same day as her patient, that came back she was anemic, leaving us wondering if it’s Izzie that has cancer.

9 Sweet Surrender (8.8)

Izzie has been admitted to Seattle Grace with an official cancer diagnosis. To help take her mind off of things, Meredith has agreed to let Izzie help plan her upcoming wedding to Derek. Callie has a few problems of her own to deal with at the top of the episode when her somewhat intimidating father arrives.

Callie introduces her dad to the new person she is dating, Arizona Robbins, and it’s clear it will take Callie’s father a minute to process this new information. Also happening at Seattle Grace, Dr. Bailey deals with a particularly hard case when a very sick child in her care passes away in her father’s arms while Miranda sits by and watches.

8 Sympathy For The Devil (8.9)

Stresses are high for Meredith, Derek, and their friends for a couple of reasons at the top of this episode. Derek’s mother is coming to town, so Izzie, Cristina, and Alex help Meredith clean her house.

Derek is treating a prisoner on death row who is refusing surgery, stating he’d rather die in a hospital than in a maximum-security prisoner, which adds to an already tense environment. Izzie on the other hand, is dealing with her own issues, like seeing the ghost of her dead lover, Denny Duquette, and trying to keep that a secret from the rest of the group.

7 I Will Follow You Into The Dark (8.9)

Derek is suffering from a bought of depression after losing a patient. The patient’s husband sues the hospital for malpractice, and during the deposition, Derek is informed that more people have died in surgery with him than have survived. This fact makes Derek question everything about his entire life, and he decides to quit medicine.

Of course, Meredith refuses to give up on him. Izzie is working through her cancer diagnosis with her interns, who still don’t know it’s her charts and x-rays they’re looking at. The first person Izzie decides to tell is, surprisingly, Cristina.

6 Stand By Me (9.0)

Cristina is now the only person who knows about Izzie’s cancer, and Izzie struggles to keep her quiet until she’s ready to tell everyone else. Derek has gone missing, causing even more chaos than usual at Seattle Grace. On top of all this, the doctors and interns are getting ready to do one of the most difficult surgeries they have ever done.

A patient who lost a large majority of his face in a drunk driving accident has returned to the hospital so that Mark Sloane can give him a face transplant. The difficulty of this surgery requires most of the attendings at the hospital, giving the resident doctors a lot of responsibility, and Cristina gets to perform her first solo surgery.

5 Here’s To Future Days (9.0)

Alex and Izzie have just gotten married, and Derek has figured out a way to remove the tumor from Izzie’s brain. Derek explains his plan to Izzie, and she has to decide whether or not to have the risky surgery.

Izzie gets put through a series of tests to see how potential outcomes of the surgery would affect Izzie’s memory and speech. The test doesn’t go well and it scares Izzie out of the surgery. Alex is upset by Izzie’s decision and lashes out. Izzie turns to George for advice and ultimately decides to have the surgery. She also decides to sign a DNR.

4 Elevator Love Letter (9.1)

Derek returns to Seattle Grace after his breakdown and is ready to operate. His first operation is on Izzie, who has just revealed to her friends and fellow doctors that she has a brain tumor. Cristina is having her own issues with her new boyfriend, Owen, who before working at Seattle Grace, was an army medic and is suffering from PTSD.

Owen’s PTSD gets out of hand one night when he tries to strangle Cristina in her sleep. Callie walks in on the commotion and snaps Owen out of it, but the group is left with a lot of worry and questions.

3 Stairway To Heaven (9.2)

The doctors have been fighting to keep a young boy alive, Jackson, who needs multiple organ transplants. There’s a match for Jackson just a few doors down. An inmate on death row has just undergone brain surgery, but he’s a match for Jackson and wants to die so he can give the young boy the organs he needs.

Meredith is on board with the idea, but no one else seems to be. At the same time, Izzie sees the ghost of Denny everywhere, and she can’t escape it. She knows this means something serious is wrong with her, but she’s in denial and refusing to address it.

2 What A Difference A Day Makes (9.3)

This episode is a special one because it is the series’ one-hundredth episode. Derek and Meredith are preparing for their upcoming wedding. Izzie is more excited than anybody else, despite the fact that her hair is falling out, and she’s seeing Denny’s ghost again, which means her tumor is still very much in her brain.

In a big twist, Meredith rushes into Izzie’s room toward the end of the episode carrying her wedding dress, telling Izzie that the dress isn’t hers. Izzie is confused at first, but then Alex comes into the room, and Izzie understands. It’s not Meredith’s wedding day; it’s Izzie’s.

1 Now Or Never (9.6)

In the season five finale, everyone’s nervous about Izzie’s big surgery with Derek taking the lead and removing a part of Izzie’s brain, in hopes of removing her tumor as well. At the same time Izzie is in surgery, a John Doe is rushed into the emergency room with extensive injuries after jumping in front of a bus to save a woman.

The John Doe seems to be a side storyline until the patient writes “007” on a post-it and hands it to Meredith. It takes her a minute, but Meredith realizes that their John Doe is George. The season ends on a massive cliffhanger, with both Izzie and George’s lives on the line.
