Greys Anatomy Hayes Will Copy Riggs Ending Theory Explained

Cormac Hayes’s storyline might be more similar to that of Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) in ways that nobody had expected, at least when considering their romantic interests in Grey’s Anatomy. The Head of Pediatric Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, portrayed by Richard Flood, made his first appearance in season 16 and was dubbed McWidow by Cristina Yang. The beloved one-half of the Twisted Sisters had recommended him for the position at the hospital, but she also pushed him as a romantic interest for Meredith.

Riggs’s introduction to the hospital was very different from Hayes’s, as he wasn’t really presented as a potential love interest for Meredith from the beginning. The characters most connected to him were April Kepner (Sarah Drew), his colleague in Jordan and the reason he ended up at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), with whom he served in the military. He was casually involved with Meredith before realizing he was in love with her, but their relationship abruptly ended when his ex-fiancé and Owen’s sister Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) was found in Iraq and brought back to Seattle for surgery.

It’s unsure whether their final storylines will end the same way, but it looks like this may be the case considering what season 18 hints at. Riggs ended up moving to California with Megan in season 14, leaving Seattle and Meredith behind, and despite Hayes’s being framed as Meredith’s love interest, he too had to split from her when one of his sons could not deal with his father being in a new relationship and started having panic attacks. With Megan being back in Seattle in Grey’s Anatomy season 18 in order to live closer to her family after her relationship with Riggs ended, she and Hayes seemed to bond over their complicated experiences with their kids.

In both storylines, Riggs and Hayes’s involvement with Meredith ended abruptly. While Riggs’s split from Meredith was developed over a few episodes arc, in a way, even with Meredith’s support, as she argued that they both wished for their partners to be back and his wish was unexpectedly granted, and he was not taking advantage of it, Meredith’s situation with Hayes felt even more abrupt and somewhat not developed. Both characters seemed to be interested in each other, but something always happened, whether it was her relationship with DeLuca or Meredith’s illness with Covid-19. When they finally dated, they stopped for Hayes’s son’s well-being, but viewers did not get to see that arc developed and only knew about it because it was mentioned in season 18’s premiere.

With Meredith spending more time in Minnesota and tentatively starting a relationship with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), a rekindling between her and Hayes seems unlikely in the future. Moreover, as Hayes became Megan’s son Farouk’s doctor, he can be seen interacting with the two in almost every scene he was in of season 18, and despite the difficult situation with her son’s illness, Megan seemed to be connecting deeply with Hayes, more than with any other character except her family and Riggs. It may not be definitive, not a lot might have happened between the two of them yet, but a relationship between Megan and Hayes seems where Grey’s Anatomy season 18 is headed.
