Greys Anatomy Patrick Dempsey Fallout Explained Allegations & Updates

Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most successful TV series in recent years, but it’s also one that has been involved in different controversies for years, and the latest one is all about a fan-favorite actor: Patrick Dempsey. Medical drama is a subgenre that has proven to be very popular in the realm of TV, and while there have been many successful shows coming from it, few have had the same impact and influence as Grey’s Anatomy. Created by Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy began as a mid-season replacement in 2005, but it has lived on for over 15 seasons and it still shows no signs of stopping soon.

Grey’s Anatomy follows the basic premise of medical dramas and focuses on the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings as they do their best to balance their professional and personal lives, which often overlap and create a lot of drama inside and outside the hospital. The series is led by Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who started as an intern (alongside many other fan-favorites) and went on to become Head of General Surgery and now Director of the Residency Program at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Through her, viewers have met a variety of characters, both coworkers and patients, and one who became an instant favorite thanks to his charm was Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey.

Derek Shepherd became the primary love interest of Meredith Grey and thus one of the most popular characters in Grey’s Anatomy, with Patrick Dempsey also becoming quite popular with fans. Dempsey left the show in season 11 but has returned for special episodes and had a recurrent role in season 17 when he appeared in Meredith’s COVID-induced dreams. However, his reputation as “McDreamy” has changed as information on his on-set behavior and more has come to light – and here’s how Patrick Dempsey’s fallout has developed.

Isaiah Washington vs Patrick Dempsey

Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) and Derek Shepherd were introduced in Grey’s Anatomy season 1 as attendings at Seattle Grace Hospital – the former as a cardiothoracic surgeon and the latter as a neurosurgeon. Derek went on to develop a very shaky relationship with Meredith while Preston did the same with Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and infamously left her in the chapel on their wedding day. Preston’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy was abrupt, and it was the result of a lot of behind-the-scenes drama, which also involved Dempsey and T.R. Knight, who played George O’Malley.

In late 2006, it was reported that Washington insulted T.R. Knight with a homophobic slur, which then led to Knight publicly coming out. Washington apologized in an official statement but his comments on the issue during the Golden Globes event the following year reignited controversy. In June 2007, ABC decided not to renew Washington’s contract and so he left Grey’s Anatomy. Not long after, during an appearance on Larry King Live, Washington clarified that he didn’t use a homophobic slur in reference to Knight and instead blurted it out in an unrelated context during an argument he claimed was provoked by Dempsey, who he felt wasn’t treating him right. Washington added that the reason behind his argument with Dempsey was the latter’s lateness, and what sent Dempsey off was when Washington said he “didn’t need Ellen” as “he can act”. Even with all this information, Dempsey wasn’t seen as an active player in the conflict and was even painted as a victim (depending on who told the story), and his image as “McDreamy” remained mostly intact.

Patrick Dempsey Leaves Grey’s Anatomy

Greys Anatomy Patrick Dempsey Fallout Explained Allegations & Updates

Derek Shepherd continued to be an important part of Grey’s Anatomy until season 11, where after being involved in a car accident and a lot of complications to save his life, Meredith decided to remove him from life support. Speaking to People in 2016, Dempsey shared it had been long enough and it was time for him to move forward with his career and take on other projects, adding that he “should have moved on a couple of years earlier” and over-extended his time in Grey’s Anatomy. Dempsey also said the main reason for his departure was that shooting Grey’s Anatomy was too time-consuming, and it left him with little time to spend with his family.

However, there was a lot of on-set drama surrounding Dempsey’s departure. In the book How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy, by Lynette Rice, former executive producers James D. Parriott and Jeannine Renshaw talked about what was truly happening behind the scenes with Patrick Dempsey before his departure from Grey’s Anatomy, and there was a lot of on-set friction with Pompeo and Rhimes. Parriott revealed that Dempsey was “terrorizing the set” and some cast members “had all sorts of PTSD with him”. According to him, Dempsey had such control and influence on set that “he knew he could stop production and scare people”, and he was so done with the show and visibly upset about the “inconvenience of coming in every day and working”, which inevitably created friction with Rhimes

Renshaw shared that Pompeo grew frustrated with Dempsey as she “would get angry that he wasn’t working as much”, and didn’t like how he complained about working until late when she “had twice as many scenes” in the same episode. Renshaw also added that Rhimes witnessed a lot of the complaining and it all came to a point where she had to say to the network “if he doesn’t go, I go”. Although other testimonies found in the book are more favorable and emphasize Dempsey’s frustration with the show, reports about Dempsey’s unpleasant behavior on set continued, and only grew when Rhimes admitted in 2015 during an appearance on The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore that she killed off a character from one of her shows because she didn’t like the actor. Although she never revealed who it was, fans were quick to point fingers at Dempsey, who later said he thinks Rhimes “loves being provocative and that’s fine for who she is”, and as at the time she was promoting a book and her TV shows, she knew how to deal with the media and how to provoke the reactions she was looking for.

Ellen Pompeo & Patrick Dempsey’s Contract Negotiations

Greys Anatomy Patrick Dempsey Fallout Explained Allegations & Updates

In an interview with THR in 2018, Ellen Pompeo opened up about being the highest-paid actress on TV and shared that she reached out to Dempsey to negotiate their contracts together at some point. Pompeo called Dempsey’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy a “defining moment, deal-wise” as he could be (and was) used as leverage against her under the excuse of “we don’t need you, we have Patrick”. Unfortunately, Dempsey wasn’t open nor interested in negotiating his contract alongside Pompeo, so she continued to fight for it on her own. Pompeo also shared that it was “a long working relationship and it was a tumultuous end”, so she needed some time off to decompress after Dempsey left Grey’s Anatomy. Whether Dempsey wasn’t interested in helping his co-star and lead of the show or he was growing more and more frustrated with working in Grey’s Anatomy is a mystery. In 2018, Pompeo revealed on Jada Smith’s Red Table Talk that she hadn’t spoken to Dempsey since he left the show in 2015, making it clear that she had no hard feelings towards him.

Isaiah Washington’s Allegations Against Patrick Dempsey

During an interview on Tavis Smiley’s radio show in October 2021 (via Insider), Washington made new statements about Dempsey and his time in Grey’s Anatomy, revealing that Pompeo took “hush money” from unnamed parties. The point of this was for her to not reveal “how toxic and nasty Patrick Dempsey really was”, this as the #MeToo movement started to rise – after that, Pompeo signed the deal that turned her into the highest-paid actress on TV. Washington had a lot more to say about Dempsey, his on-set behavior, and the network’s response to it, explaining that, around the time he exited Grey’s Anatomy, his behavior was being used to cover Dempsey’s, and that “McDreamy” wasn’t a nice guy from day one. Neither Dempsey nor Pompeo have commented on any of this so far.

Patrick Dempsey is currently the star of the financial thriller Devils, based on the 2014 novel by the same name by Guido Maria Brera, and is set to reprise his role as Robert Philip in Disenchanted, the long-awaited sequel to Disney’s Enchanted. Surely, these won’t be the only details about his time in Grey’s Anatomy that will come to light, and it’s to be seen how he and his team will deal with all these allegations and how these will affect his career, as there’s now more attention to these type of behaviors from all those working in this industry and the audience as well.
