While Meredith Grey seems to be destined to become a doctor, having grown up with a brilliant surgeon mother, the Grey’s Anatomy protagonist has never had an easy time. She seemed to have sailed through medical school and long shifts; tough surgeries, and detailed research are no problem for her. But when it comes to her personal life, she struggles much more, and it seems like whenever she experiences happiness, something happens to take the joy away.

While some parts of Meredith’s story are perplexing, her journey is relatable as it’s full of mistakes and problems. On her path to become a successful doctor and happy person, Meredith has had more tough times than most.

10 Not Having Any Family Love Or Support

Meredith has faced many tough surgeries but nothing seems to match the pain that she felt growing up with her mother, Ellis Grey.

Meredith has never had any family love or any support from them, either. Ellis neglected her and was more interested in advancing her career than taking care of her child. Ellis also struggled with her mental health but no one helped her, which is heartbreaking. Later on in the show, Meredith’s dad Thatcher comes to the hospital, driving home how they have no relationship, either. It’s difficult to move forward as a young adult when there isn’t that safety net of home and family to fall back on.

9 Losing The Love Of Her Life

Although Derek and Meredith don’t have a perfect relationship, they are beloved by fans and there’s no question that Derek is the love of Meredith’s life.

Meredith had to face the obstacle of losing Derek, as this changed her vision for the future and the way that she thought her life would turn out. She thought that she and Derek would continue raising their children and that they would be happy. But Meredith didn’t get the chance to work through her problems with her husband, and instead, she had to say goodbye to him too soon. She also had to see the doctor who couldn’t save Derek’s life at the hospital all the time, as Penny got a job there and started dating Callie.

8 Losing Her Sister

The doctors were all injured in the plane crash in the season 8 finale and Lexie passed away after being crushed by part of the plane. This was a truly horrible way to go and Meredith had to grieve her sister while wondering if she and her fellow doctors would get out of the situation alive.

Since Meredith didn’t have her parents around, her bond with her half-sister Lexie meant a lot to her, making Lexie’s death even more devastating. Facing this tragedy is another obstacle that Meredith had to deal with.

7 Her Best Friend And Support System Moved Away

While it seemed logical that Cristina would get an incredible new job and move away, it was still one of the hardest things that Meredith ever went through.

Having Cristina at the hospital meant everything to Meredith. She had someone she could lean on and talk to about anything, and Cristina built her up and helped her find confidence when she was struggling. When Cristina left, Meredith had to move past yet another obstacle, as she had to find someone else whom she could count on just as much. She did become closer to Alex and the two were like family, but then he moved away, too.

6 She Almost Lost Her Child Zola After The Clinical Trial

In order to ensure that Adele didn’t get the placebo, Meredith interfered with the hospital’s Alzheimer’s trial. Derek was furious to learn what she had done.

They had just gotten temporary custody of Zola in the season 8 episode “She’s Gone,” when they lost her, as the counselor took her away from them. Meredith was facing the consequences of her actions, and she felt terrible since she felt that she was doing the right thing for Adele but she didn’t want to lose her child over it. Zola was returned to Meredith and Derek, but the damage had been done, as this was an incredibly stressful period.

5 Derek Wanted His Career To Come First

Cristina is famous for giving Meredith advice about not getting lost in Derek’s orbit. She told her best friend, “Don’t let what he wants eclipse what you need. He’s very dreamy, but he is not the sun — you are.”

While Meredith loved Derek, he definitely wanted his career to come first, especially when he began working for the President. He knew that Meredith’s job was getting busier and more demanding, but he didn’t seem to take much notice of that. Meredith wanted him to devote more time to their family so she could shine, and he was being selfish.

4 Being Afraid To Be Vulnerable Again With A New Partner

Meredith also faced the obstacle of being uncertain about intimacy and relationships after Derek passed away.

She tried dating Dr. William Thorpe but had trouble being vulnerable with a new partner, and after things went south with Nathan Riggs, it seemed like it might be a long time before she tried again. While not every fan loves DeLuca and Meredith’s romance, he was the first serious partner she had after Derek, and she was able to move past her fears.

3 The Hospital Was Almost Sold

Many characters came close to death on Grey’s Anatomy and the season 8 finale meant saying goodbye to two fan-favorites: Lexie and Mark.

After this horrible situation, the doctors found out that Pegasus Horizons could have bought the hospital. This would have changed everything, especially because when that happens, there’s no guarantee that existing employees would keep their positions. After the characters worked together, they were able to buy the hospital themselves after an amazing donation of millions of dollars from the Harper Avery Foundation. The hospital then became called Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

2 She Almost Lost Her Medical License

In season 15, Meredith was devastated that a little girl didn’t have health insurance and needed to be treated for cancer. She put the name of her child on the form instead of the girl’s, which was insurance fraud.

Meredith almost lost her medical license and had to do community service. This is one of the biggest obstacles she has encountered as it would, of course, mean that she could no longer do the job that she loves and is so passionate about.

1 She Contracted COVID-19 From Work And Fought For Her Life

After getting sick with COVID-19, Meredith saw Derek standing on a beach, and these visualizations have been beautiful and so sad.

It’s fair to say that the biggest obstacle that this character has ever had to deal with is getting this horrible virus from her workplace and almost dying as a result. While the season isn’t over, it seems likely that the main character on Grey’s Anatomy will survive, although she will of course always remember this terrifying experience.
