Given the high level of fan interest that Grey’s Anatomy generated from the start, it was only going to be a matter of time before the universe was expanded. The shows, Private Practice and Station 19, were thus born. And while the former had to come to an early end, the latter is still going strong.

On occasion, characters from each show have crossed over to the other. Such interactions have been beneficial to the franchise as a whole as they’ve made fans eager to check out all shows. However, not every crossover episode has been brilliant. Fan consensus on IMDb points to a few standout offerings.

10 “Save Yourself” (Station 19) – 7.9

In this episode, the Seattle firefighting team responds to a call about a newlywed couple that’s trapped inside a crashed car. The bride demonstrates her selfishness by asking the firefighters to save her first because she has more to live for. The two are then rushed to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

The episode distinguishes itself by mostly focusing on the minor characters instead of the major ones. Once again, questionable dating choices are focused on, with the bride’s attitude serving as a confirmation that the two lovebirds aren’t made for each other. By disregarding her husband’s welfare, the bride also makes her case for herself as one of the worst patients in Grey’s Anatomy before even getting to the hospital.

9 “Another Second Chance” (Private Practice) – 8.0

Mark brings his daughter, Sloan, to Oceanside Wellness so that Addison can operate on her and save her unborn baby. As he’s waiting for Sloan to recover, he flirts with Addison and ends up sleeping with her.

Addison and Mark literally take over proceedings in “Another Second Chance,” shoving the rest to the side. Both are strong characters thus their dominance doesn’t turn out to be a bad thing. The two are part of the worst Grey’s Anatomy cheating scandals but their decision to sleep together again helps to temporarily transform the mood from one of melancholy to one of romance.

8 “Bottle And Explode” (Grey’s Anatomy) – 8.0

A pipeline explosion rocks Seattle, calling the doctors and firefighters into action. Due to the delicate nature of the emergency, all the characters off Station 19 appear in the crossover episode.

By triggering franticness, “Bottle And Explode” helps pump up the level of drama in the show. The explosion creates a sad mood and serious issues are also addressed as Owen, who had witnessed similar occurrences during his time in the army, experienced a PTSD episode once again.

7 “Momma Knows Best” (Grey’s Anatomy) – 8.0

In this episode, Station 19’s Dean Miller brings an unconscious woman to Grey Sloan and while he’s there, he develops a crush on Maggie. He asks Bailey if Maggie is single but she brushes him off. He eventually garners courage and asks Maggie out.

Surgeons are rarely romantically paired with non-surgeons in this fictional world and “Momma Knows Best” helps keep things that way by making Maggie reveal to Dean that she is already taken. Nonetheless, the episode is enjoyable because for once, it appears like Winston Ndugu, one of the best Cardiothoracic surgeons in Grey’s Anatomy, is about to have a major rival for Maggie’s heart.

6 “Out Of Control” (Station 19) – 8.0

Bailey calls Ben to inform him that her mother has sadly died from COVID-19. He is devastated because he had only dropped her at the hospital the previous day.

The episode’s strength lies in the fact that it highlights real-world issues, more specifically the COVID-19 pandemic. While Grey’s Anatomy had already delved into that area by revealing that Meredith was suffering from the disease and doctors were struggling, Station 19 showed how the city and other key workers were coping too.

5 “Ex-Life” (Private Practice) – 8.2

Derek heads over to Oceanside Wellness Group to monitor Jen while Bailey tries to help Sam get treatment for breathing problems. Elsewhere, Addison feels that Bailey and Sam are interfering with her work.

Bailey is the star of the episode and she demonstrates that she not only thrives in her own playground but out of it too. She is more than happy to order Addison around, even though she is not an employee of Oceanside Wellness Group. But Bailey doesn’t keep getting her way. The element of competition is the spice that makes “Ex-Life” such a palatable episode.

4 “Before And After” (Grey’s Anatomy) – 8.3

Addison brings over her brother to Grey Sloan, hoping that Derek will operate on him. However, Derek believes the procedure, which involves removing worms from the brain, will be too difficult. It is also in this episode that Addison also finds out about Mark and Lexie.

From the outside, “Before And After” seems like it’s about the OR but it’s more about love. As brilliant a neurosurgeon as Derek is, he has always had moments where he second-guessed himself. His reason for declining the surgery isn’t entirely professional as he worries about how Addison would react if her brother’s surgery didn’t go to plan while Addison is seen to be curious about the blossoming romance between Mark and Lexie.

3 “You Break My Heart” (Private Practice) – 8.4

Cooper and Charlotte take a patient named Erica to Seattle Grace-Mercy West. The patient needs surgery that takes 90 seconds, something only Derek and Amelia can do.

The episode is special because it marks the last time that Grey’s Anatomy characters ever appear in Private Practice. The goal is to show just how skilled the doctors are and it works. Fans can’t help but hold their breaths, waiting to see if Derek and company will be able to do the surgery in less than 2 minutes but they complete it in exactly 88 seconds.

2 “Things We Lost in the Fire” (Station 19) – 9.1

An explosion rocks a neighborhood, causing the firefighters to work around the clock to save as many lives as they can. Transporting patients to Grey Sloan becomes an issue because there is a shortage of cars.

Despite the episode lacking any standout moments, it still ends up being a solid offering by simply focusing on the tragedy. The plight of various victims is highlighted, with viewers left crossing their fingers, hoping that all will be well. Luckily, enough people get rushed to the hospital, preventing their demise.

1 “Always Ready” (Station 19) – 9.2

In this episode, after a fire rocks a coffee beanery, firefighter Ripley gets admitted to Grey-Sloan. There, he keeps asking for Vic, wanting to accept her proposal. But when she shows up, he dies in her arms.

“Always Ready” takes gloom a notch higher by making Ripley die just when audiences thought he was about to have a lengthy and prosperous relationship with Vic. Making Maggie the doctor at the center of the events also helps as her bedside manner has always been superior to that of her colleagues. The episode’s emotional might lingers on, long after it ends.
