Grounded August Update Adds Perks New Quests and a Bird

The August Content Update has arrived for Obsidian Entertainment’s Grounded, bringing with it everything from new quests to UI improvements. Players will have new ways to customize their base, and a new feathery creature will drop a new crafting material.

Grounded is an online survival game that shrinks players down to ant-sized characters and turns them loose in a vibrant backyard. Although the game is in early access, it became an instant hit at launch, with over one million people playing Grounded in the first two days alone. Grounded’s huge numbers in part can be attributed to its availability on Xbox Game Pass, allowing a huge number of gamers to try out the game without any additional cost.

Obsidian has released a developer vlog and patch notes detailing the improvements and changes coming to Grounded in the 0.2.0 update. Players looking for more directed activities will be pleased to discover new daily quest types being offered by the BURG.L robot, including ones that ask players to craft specific items and one that sends them scouring the backyard for specific BURG.L chips. Both of these will grant the Raw Science resource upon completion. But an even bigger addition to Grounded is the new perk system, referred to as mutations. Thirteen perks are being added to start, with players allowed to equip up to three at a time. Some perks will need to be purchased from BURG.L before they can be equipped, while others will be found by exploring the backyard. The new Grounded update also brings new creatures to the backyard, including water fleas that will hang out in the various pools and a bird that will drop feathers which can be used in crafting.

Did the Grounded August Update Add Story Content?

The one thing the Grounded August update doesn’t bring is more story content. Currently, what little story is available in the game can be finished relatively quickly, and Obsidian hasn’t indicated when Grounded will add more story to the game. But the daily quests included in the August update provide some welcome mini-goals. The BURG.L chip quests are a fun addition that encourage exploration. These quests don’t add a quest marker, but instead provide riddles describing various landmarks to help lead players to the hidden chips. The risk is that these quests could easily become repetitive, depending on how many unique riddles have been added.

The August update for Grounded feels like a fairly standard early access patch, moving the game forward in small but welcome increments. The new major additions give players new reasons to explore what may be well-trodden ground. Even the bird will give players another reason to run through the grass, as feathers will drop randomly throughout the backyard, and players will need to track where the bird was last seen to find a likely spot for the new crafting resource added to Grounded. Those who ran out of reasons to play Grounded might want to dip into the virtual backyard once more to discover the new secrets in store for players.
