GTA 5s Character Swapping Is Still Impressive 8 Years Later

One of the key features of Grand Theft Auto 5 was the player’s ability to switch between the game’s three protagonists at will. Eight years later, this mechanic is still as impressive as ever.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was the first game in the series to feature the character switching mechanic. Unlike its predecessors, GTA 5 starred three separate protagonists with intertwined stories. The switching mechanic allows players to go back and forth between these characters – Franklin, Michael, and Trevor – at will. On consoles this action is performed by holding down on the d-pad to open the selection wheel and selecting one of the four available character slots. The fourth slot, located on the bottom of the wheel, switches the player to Grand Theft Auto Online and puts them in control of their current online character.

While the system behaves simply enough, it’s actually quite an impressive feature that few other games boast even eight years later. It was a unique and creative way to make the city of Los Santos feel cohesive and connected in a game where players can control at least three separate characters. It also opened the door for GTA 5’s fun gameplay segments, seamless transitions between activities, and unique moments of characterization for the protagonists.

What Makes GTA5’s Character Swapping Great

In addition to being able to switch between characters at practically any time, players can abuse this mechanic to make Grand Theft Auto 5’s protagonists interact with each other outside of the open world. If the player takes one character to a location, leaves them there, and then takes another character to that same location, the two characters will actually interact to some degree. Most notably, following another of the game’s protagonists for too long will result in them attacking the player and sending them to the hospital, as per the usual GTA death sequence.

When players aren’t forcing the protagonists to badger and batter each other, however, they can use them for a variety of practical purposes. For instance, if the player becomes stuck in the wilderness with no vehicle and doesn’t want to waste time running to the nearest road, they can simply switch to another character for a quick and easy GTA 5 fast-travel alternative. They can also use it to evade the law by switching characters while they still have a wanted level. Switch back too soon, however, and the wanted level will not have disappeared.

Finally, the character switching sequences in GTA 5 are often some of the most humorous moments of characterization in the game. Trevor’s, in particular, reach the utmost heights of absurdity. The player will never know whether their Trevor will wake up hungover in a ditch or in the middle of a shootout with half of the Los Santos police department. Likewise, players can encounter Michael stumbling out of a bar or Franklin emerging from the Vanilla Unicorn strip club.

Few other open world games have dared to put the player in the shoes of multiple people at once like Grand Theft Auto 5 does. Even then, fewer have dared to let them switch between these protagonists at will. Rockstar went the extra mile by including interactive and narrative elements into the system just to make it more entertaining. On top of that, they also used it as a seamless way to switch between online and offline modes at the press of a few buttons. When Rockstar gets around to releasing Grand Theft Auto 6, character swapping should definitely be a mechanic worth consideration.
