GTA 6 Location Theory Why Grand Theft Auto Should Return To London

It looks like Grand Theft Auto 6 is back in production after being shut down for COVID, and that means rumors about the location of the game have started flying again. Some rumors point to the series returning to Vice City, the fictional recreation of Miami that was made for the 3D GTA Universe. However, the series could also return to a different city featured in earlier Grand Theft Auto titles: London.

The GTA series visited London between Grand Theft Auto and GTA II. The original Grand Theft Auto is set in three cities: Liberty City (New York) San Andreas (San Francisco) and Vice City (Miami). However, a year after its release in 1999, two expansion packs with extra missions were released: Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1969. The expansions added new missions to the original Grand Theft Auto but kept many features from the first game in the series, such as initiating missions by answering phone booths. The series is rumored to go back to Tommy Vercetti and Vice City, but going to a non-American city would give the franchise a brand-new flavor.

Being that Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 is more than 20 years old, that version of London didn’t feature much detail. The setting for GTA 6 will require a map with intricate design. London would be a great setting because of its combination of recognizable landmarks mixed in among plenty of room for a video game story to happen. London’s got a river, so an industrial area and shipping missions would be easy to work in for developer Rockstar Games, and British sea culture could point to boat missions. The city has government buildings for high-profile assassination missions, and loads of streets to drive along. It’s got historic landmarks, underground buildings, and pubs to house all types of factions.

What GTA 6 In London Must Include

If London is used as inspiration for the setting for the next Grand Theft Auto game, there’s a few things Rockstar should definitely do now that work has resumed on GTA 6. It’s got to have London Bridge of course, and Big Ben, and Piccadilly Circus. Players will need to have a fast way to get around the virtual city, so a tube system could make fast-travel mechanics make sense. The series’ culture and humor would have to make the jump across the pond, as Grand Theft Auto has usually focused on satirizing American principles. There also has to be some element of soccer, so Wembley Stadium, Stamford Bridge, or the brand new Tottenham Hotspur stadium in north London could be recreated. There’s got to be some sort of palace for GTA’s puppet royalty, and a place like Westminster Abbey for Rockstar to take shots at religion.

Grand Theft Auto 6 could be a game fans play for 10 years, so if London is the choice it will have to be recreated accurately. Since English culture around weapons is so different, a GTA set in London would have to view guns differently, especially if the game is set in the 70’s. The visuals of the city are very defining, and would require as much (if not more) real-world accuracy than Grand Theft Auto 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2. Setting Grand Theft Auto 6 in London would be a surprising choice after so long in the states, but London is one of the few cities in the would that could house all the chaos of a Grand Theft Auto title.
