GTA 6 May Have Major Advantage Over GTA Online TakeTwo Patent Suggests

New patents filed by Take-Two Interactive suggests that GTA VI will have a massive advantage over GTA Online in at least one regard, though just how the features will be implemented in a theoretical future Grand Theft Auto game remains to be seen. Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of Rockstar Games, the developer behind the Grand Theft Auto series. Though rumors of GTA 6 have persisted for several years now, Rockstar Games has publicly remained committed to both GTA Online, the immensely popular online multiplayer component of GTA 5, and Red Dead Online as well.

With current-gen versions of GTA 5 already confirmed and a renewed focus on online multiplayer components of existing games thanks to Red Dead Online becoming a standalone game, it would appear Rockstar has no immediate plans for a new instalment in the Grand Theft Auto series. That stance has persisted for quite some time now and has frustrated fans who want more frequent releases from the popular franchise, but with the ongoing financial success of both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continuing to remain lucrative, it’s understandable why Rockstar hasn’t felt the need to push hard to release a new game.

Take-Two Interactive’s recent patent filings do suggest that GTA VI is becoming more of a focus – or, at the very least, potential technologies that could inform that game’s development are. As highlighted by Twitter user Big Jim Colosimo (and reported by Rockstar Intel), some new patents regarding session management systems and virtual environments have been filed by Take-Two Interactive. Essentially, session management is is an online function that determines how effectively a game can populate its multiplayer feature. Essentially, the new patent is an advanced method that could make it so that online sessions can seamlessly transition between friends, or prevent interruptions in service from disconnections.

The virtual environments patent, on the other hand, suggests improvements to AI behaviors and how consoles handle processing them. The patent makes reference to using dedicated servers to help more advanced AI design rather than the hardware that’s running the game, which again hints to some major plans for GTA VI online functionalities.

Of course, it’s important to take these potential GTA VI online patents with a grain of salt. Nothing about these patents is confirmed to be related to that game – which also hasn’t been announced yet – and they may not be implemented in it at all. Even if they are part of GTA VI plans, they may be integrated into the experience in ways that aren’t as obvious as the ones being discussed by analysts now. All of that being said, however, it appears Rockstar Games is once again pushing the envelope in online game design and AI systems, and it will be exciting to see how that plays out whenever it becomes a part of the company’s next release.
