GTA Onlines Cayo Perico Island Is Really Disappointing

The new Cayo Perico Heist in Grand Theft Auto Online was supposed to be a new milestone for the game. It was promoted as the largest content update in GTA Online’s history, with new vehicles, music, and a massive location. The hype surrounding Cayo Perico was palpable, and it could’ve been a rousing success for both Rockstar Games and GTA Online. Instead, the island is mostly just a disappointment.

There are a number of reasons that GTA Online’s Cayo Perico addition feels like such a disappointment. Perhaps expectations were simply too high. After all, it’s been the better part of a decade since a new landmass was put into GTA Online. Los Santos has become familiar, while Cayo Perico promised all the excitement of exploring a brand-new island. Unfortunately, this new island can’t be explored in free roam, which is perhaps the biggest disappointment of all.

It’s unclear why Rockstar Games brought such a massive new location into GTA Online and locked it out of free roam. Beach parties can be revisited once the Heist is completed, which shows how much Rockstar Games is emphasizing music in the latest GTAO update, but players will only really get to explore Cayo Perico during the Heist. This would’ve been disappointing enough, but it adds a bit of insult to injury that the island just feels so empty and uneventful.

GTA Online’s Cayo Perico Heist Location Is Dull

The new island in GTA Online is full of landmasses and environments to explore, but it still feels incredibly empty. Beyond a few vehicles and characters to see, there’s not really a lot to do. The main focus is just getting through the Heist, which means exploring Cayo Perico isn’t half as fun or interesting as it should (or could) be. Also, strangely enough, most of the prep missions for the Cayo Perico Heist don’t even take place on the island.

Instead, players will spend most of their time running around Los Santos doing prep. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, except for when players remember that the island isn’t available in GTA Online’s free roam, it means very little of the time spent on the Cayo Perico Heist actually takes place in Cayo Perico. Even saving up the money for a fancy new submarine feels pretty arduous and bland, since the cheapest sub still costs a little over $2 million.

All of these factors contribute to GTA Online’s Cayo Perico Heist feeling like a huge disappointment. Hopefully, the new island will eventually be available for free roam, and hopefully the content on the island will continue to grow. For now, though, the Cayo Perico Heist in GTA Online is just really disappointing.
