After much speculation, rumor, an unofficial confirmation of its existence, and an official reveal, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition finally has a trailer and some details on its overhaul of the three classic games. Players can return to GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas when the GTA Trilogy releases on November 11, with the remasters landing on just about every platform. PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch players will all have the opportunity to re-experience the genesis of 3D GTA, but each console edition will have slight differences.

The Grand Theft Auto series has become an iconic industry powerhouse, and the PlayStation 2/original Xbox era games were instrumental in its rise to popularity. The three games take players all across Rockstar’s parody of the United States, taking place in analogues of New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. Any GTA property is guaranteed to be highly anticipated, and the announcement of GTA: The Trilogy managed to crash Rockstar’s website. The original games are quite dated by modern standards, so it’s not surprising to see such an enthusiastic response to the upcoming release of revamped versions.

Every version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, from PC to the Switch, will have graphical updates. Character models have been remastered, weather effects are more impressive, lighting is more robust, and scenery has been given a facelift. However, the games still use a version of the old graphics, attempting to achieve higher visual fidelity without compromising the art style of the originals. Perhaps the most important change across the board is the reworked controls. The trilogy’s control scheme was exceptionally dated, and made it difficult for some to go back and experience the classic GTA titles. Each GTA game in the The Definitive Edition will emulate GTA 5 in its controls, which will hopefully be a universal improvement to the gameplay. There is, however, differences in the various versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition owing to the wide range of hardware accessible to console players.

GTA Trilogy Differences: PlayStation & Xbox

GTA Trilogy All PS5 Xbox Series X & Nintendo Switch Differences

The Rockstar Games website does very little to differentiate between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions, and it appears that the rumors of a higher price were incorrect. The most important thing to note about these two versions of GTA: The Trilogy is that they will support 4K resolutions, and reach 60 frames per second. The website says “up to 60 FPS,” so it’s unclear how reliably it will hit that mark. The vague wording also leaves room for the possibility of two different performance modes, like many games have been doing recently – one that targets high resolution, and one that prioritizes frame rate – though there hasn’t been any word on this just yet. It’s also notable that the 4K/60fps details make no mention of the Xbox Series S, so Microsoft’s half-step console may not perform as well as the Series X for GTA: The Trilogy.

Collective mention of the PS5 and Series X implies they are essentially running the same version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, but attempting to preorder through the Rockstar website leads to some oddities. There are separate buttons for pre-ordering on the PS4 and PS5, but Xbox platforms have all been consolidated into one. This is likely due to Xbox’s Smart Delivery system – and this is seemingly confirmed by the Microsoft Store page – but the strange thing is, Rockstar’s website only lets potential customers pre-order a physical copy for Xbox. Physical copies are only available for the PS4 as well, and even the PlayStation Store currently only lists a digital version for the PS5. There’s also no mention on the Rockstar website of how well the PS4 and Xbox One versions perform. If the “completely rebuilt lighting system with enhanced shadows, reflections, and more” uses ray-tracing, then the atmosphere on last-gen consoles may be less impressive.

GTA Trilogy Differences: Nintendo Switch

Surprisingly, the Nintendo Switch version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition appears to be rather robust, making use of the console’s features. Nintendo’s less powerful system tends to be an afterthought for many AAA releases, getting a port at a later time and with reduced performance, but GTA: The Trilogy is expected to release on November 11 for the Switch as well. It will be one of the few games that support the Switch’s touch screen, a feature often left out because of its inaccessibility when the console is docked. According to the Rockstar website, in addition to the GTA 5-inspired controls, the touch screen will be used for zooming and panning the camera, as well as navigating menus. GTA: The Trilogy will also support the Switch’s gyroscopic capabilities for aiming. The PS4’s DualShock and the PS5’s DualSense also have gyro, but only the Switch has been confirmed to support this feature so far.

There aren’t any details on the Switch’s performance for GTA Trilogy, but it’s likely in a similar boat as the PS4 and Xbox One. The Switch can’t handle 4K resolution, and it seems unlikely that it will hit 60fps. Similarly to the last-gen PlayStation and Xbox systems, any sort of ray-tracing will be absent, but such features haven’t been confirmed or denied for any version of the game by Rockstar just yet. The age of the three games and the rather faithful adherence to the original art styles may very well work in the Switch’s favor. GTA: The Trilogy certainly looks good, but they’re not as incredibly detailed as Rockstar’s most recent work, so the Switch may not fall too far behind in visual fidelity and performance.

The remastered trilogy coming to Switch also brings the benefit of a small game file. The Nintendo eShop has GTA: The Trilogy listed as 25.4 gigabytes – nearly half the size of Xbox’s 49gb. The PlayStation Store doesn’t have any details on file size just yet, but it will presumably be in the same neighborhood as that of the Xbox. The PS5 file size may end up being slightly smaller, since its architecture allows for additional compression, but its hard to imagine it will reach the Switch’s low of 25 gigs. Those concerned about resolution and frame rate may want to pick up Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X (or PC), but the convenience of the Nintendo Switch’s portability, combined with the game’s support for all its bells and whistles, makes it a compelling option in the console space.
