James Gunn’s highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 closed out Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, where the lucky fans in attendance were treated to footage from the new film. The first bit shown was an out-of-context clip in which Rocket Raccoon, baby Groot, and Yondu have been captured by the Ravagers. As a means to escape, Yondu tasks Groot with retrieving his head fin so he can control his deadly arrow. After some comedic trial and error, Yondu is finally reunited with his prized possession.

When the fin first shows up on screen, it’s apparent that Yondu received a bit of an upgrade between the original and the sequel. In Guardians of the Galaxy, the fin is very subtle in its design, looking like a red metal mohawk flat against his head. For Vol. 2, Youndu is sporting one that’s a bit more extravagant and closer to the source material. Now, Marvel has officially revealed the alien’s new appearance for all to see.

The studio took to their Instagram account to post an image of actor Michael Rooker in character, the company’s entry into the #MarvelPhotoChallenge. Shot in profile, the fin is prominently featured, giving fans a great view of Yondu. Check it out below:

It will be interesting to see how Yondu factors into the narrative this time around. In the first film, he was something of a secondary antagonist, attempting to track down (and kill) Star-Lord for betraying him. However, for the sequel, he is going to be a full-fledged member of the team. Gunn said as much himself on his Facebook page after sharing concept art of the group in action, so how Yondu joins the Guardians should be a fascinating aspect of the film, especially considering his history with Peter Quill and his previous status as leader of the Ravagers.

Plot details for Vol. 2 are hard to come by right now, but one thing that has been confirmed is that the Guardians have a very valuable ally in Yondu. During the Hall H footage, his arrow made quick work of many enemies, allowing Yondu, Rocket, and Groot to go about their prison break barely breaking a sweat. How often he uses that weapon remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a nice tool to have access to when facing seemingly insurmountable odds. The arrow seems to have gotten its one big “moment” from the clip shown at SDCC, but there’s always the possibility it comes into play at another point in the film.

Some fans feel that Yondu is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters who deserves more screen time, so his increased role in Vol. 2 should prove to be a welcomed development. Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket are a solid group, but they could always use some help. Yondu will most likely complement the team nicely, adding a fresh element to the team dynamic, providing plenty of laughs and genre thrills along the way.
