A fan-made poster combines Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy with the classic sci-fi action film Tron for the ultimate nostalgia trip. The 1982 adventure film starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and Cindy Morgan, along with its 2010 sequel, tells the story of a video game developer who is transported into a computer world called the Grid. The classic 80’s flick pairs perfectly with the 80’s soundtrack of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which allows the title to pay homage to protagonist Star-Lord’s roots as an 80’s kid.

In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, protagonist Star-Lord shares many aspects with his comic book and live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts. He is born in Missouri, growing up with his mother on Earth until he is one day abducted by extraterrestrials due to his half-alien heritage. However, unlike the film version portrayed by Chris Pratt, the game’s version of Peter Quill was raised in the 1980s instead of the ’70s. This heavily influences the title’s soundtrack, which features rock anthems from performers like KISS, Mötley Crüe, and Billy Idol. A huge number of references to popular culture from the decade are also included, as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has 80s Easter eggs such as a Chewbacca action figure, a Pac-Man cake, and even a poster from the movie Tron.

In honor of the Tron reference in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, graphic designer Rock Rider has recreated the film’s signature poster using in-game assets. The iconic poster sees Tron and ally Yori posing dramatically while standing beneath a beam of light. Rock Rider has mimicked this shot within the game, though the space superheroes Star-Lord and Gamora take the place of the film’s protagonists. The pair’s fancy Nova Corps outfits are used to mirror the technological suits worn by Tron’s heroes, and digital effects complete the recreation by having a beam of light rise out of Star-Lords walkman. The font and tagline placement seal the deal, flawlessly mimicking the iconic image.

I’m back with my recreation! Today I tried to recreate the Iconic Poster of TRON by using @GOTGTheGame shots 🤟 As everybody knows, this poster can be seen in Peter’s bedroom. That gave me a spark to make this one.#GOTGgame #TRON #RRconceptual pic.twitter.com/YvmWKqPNJl

Since its 1982 release, Tron has become a cult classic, with a 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy reigniting interest in the franchise’s digital world of The Grid. Thanks to the series’ basis in video game design, crossovers with actual video games have become fairly frequent in the past year. Earlier this year Tron outfits were added to Epic Games’ Fortnite, allowing players to compete while wearing neon sci-fi gear, and more recently Fall Guys added Tron skins to match its futuristic fourth season. The downloadable content included skins representing the antagonistic Sark, the heroic Tron, his evil counterpart Rinzler and the living program Quorra.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy acts as a love letter to 80s nostalgia through its extensive soundtrack of hits and authentic period-accurate Easter eggs. Environmental features like the Tron poster lend believability to Peter Quill’s childhood bedroom, and Rock Rider has paid homage to this detail in their newest piece. The game’s photo mode easily allows Star-Lord and Gamora to fill in for Tron and Yori, and some additional editing completes the 80’s homage.
