Halloween Kills Repeats An Avengers Infinity War Thor Mistake

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Halloween Kills.

The ending of Halloween Kills climaxes in a beautifully choreographed massacre — but that wouldn’t have been the case if the citizens of Haddonfield hadn’t repeated Thor’s critical mistake from Avengers: Infinity War. From zombies to world-ending Titans, the rule for killing the supernatural and the preternatural is simple: always go for the head. Yet, despite the high body count of Halloween Kills, when the chance came to decapitate Michael Myers and kill him once and for all, the townsfolk of Haddonfield dropped the ball.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor had the perfect opportunity to take Thanos out: he possessed Stormbreaker, the strongest weapon of Asgard, and caught Thanos off-guard just moments before he could execute his plan. Yet Thor aimed for the heart, not the head. While taking Stormbreaker to the chest would have been enough to kill almost anything else in the galaxy, Thanos simply taunted Thor instead, telling him he “should have gone for the head.” This simple miscalculation allowed Thanos to execute his plan, rewinding time to erase half of all life in the universe. While the Avengers were able to undo almost everything Thanos caused in Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow and Iron Man were two lives that wouldn’t have been lost if Thor had just gone for the head.

The citizens of Haddonfield were able to set up a similar opportunity to finally kill Michael Myers in Halloween Kills. Thanks to Karen Nelson’s bravery and quick thinking, she was able to lure Michael into the street by unmasking him, leading him right into a trap. The Haddonfield mob got some serious blows in on Michael, but they made one crucial mistake — no one went for the head. For abnormally strong villains, like Michael and Thanos, the head should be an obvious place to start in an attempt to kill them. But they made the same crucial mistake as Thor, undercalculating what it would require to kill such a villain. The battering Michael took would have easily killed an average human, and in their relief, the townsfolk of Haddonfield naively believed this would be enough to kill the supernaturally strong Michael Myers. It was not, and in the end, their ignorance cost them the lives of Tommy Doyle, Sheriff Brackett, and six other citizens who were part of the attack.

Just like when Thor failed to kill Thanos, Haddonfield’s failed attempt at killing Michael Myers will ultimately cause more deaths than just those eight. Their mistake allowed Michael to escape from one of the best opportunities they had to kill him once and for all and now he’s only more full of rage. Immediately after his escape, Michael took the opportunity to brutally slay Karen in the Myers house. There are certainly more deaths to come in Halloween Ends, all of which wouldn’t have happened if even one person had thought to decapitate him or otherwise destroy the head.

Halloween Kills’ mob mentality story ultimately fell flat. This scene could have been a pivotal chance to show the town coming together to rid itself of the monster that has preyed on them for 40 years, but they failed at the crucial moment. In such a massive group, it’s hard to buy that not even one of them thought to decapitate Michael to ensure that he was truly dead. Halloween Kills proves that Michael is only human underneath his mask. If they can manage to decapitate him in Halloween Ends, the townsfolk of Haddonfield have a good chance to make up for their Avengers: Infinity War-level mistake.
