Halo Every Legendary Campaign Ranked

Every Halo fan knows that Legendary difficulty is no joke; all fairness is thrown out the window for a seemingly insurmountable challenge that will test every bit of skill and patience the player has to offer. For years, Legendary difficulty has been the bane of Halo players, and good reason — but some of these campaigns might not be as difficult as they seem.

If you want to take on the Legendary Halo experience before Halo Infinite launches, now’s the best time to do so, as the Halo: The Master Chief Collection has added Halo 4 on Steam and Xbox Game Pass for PC. When stacking every single Legendary Halo campaign so far against each other, which ones are the easiest, and which are the hardest?

Halo 5: Guardians

Halo 5 is easily the most manageable Legendary campaign out of the whole series, solely due to the added teammates at the player’s disposal. Every Halo game has some form of AI teammates that run around with the player every now and then, but Halo 5 gives players three other Spartans with heavy-duty arsenals alongside the player, trivializing many encounters.

Even when the friendly AI isn’t working as it should (and that happens more often than not), AI teammates can revive the player if they make a mistake, and they have a generous window to do so before a checkpoint has to be restarted. If you’re looking for a challenge, Halo 5 only has its repetitive boss fights to offer that.

Halo 3: ODST

On paper, ODST would seem to be the hardest campaign in the entire Halo series. Instead of playing as an armor-clad Spartan, the player assumes the role of the Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, a more advanced marine that can still go down easily if they’re not careful. However, ODST’s sense of difficulty is often trivialized by the ability to run past most enemy encounters during the New Mambossa Streets sections, several missions that take place in areas with significant amounts of cover and invincible ally characters who hang around for a good chunk of levels, drawing fire away from the player.

Halo 3

Finishing the fight certainly isn’t an easy task, but it’s pretty manageable compared to certain other Halo campaigns. The only real issues players will face in Halo 3 are extended vehicle sections and Halo’s signature space zombies, The Flood. A good chunk of Halo 3’s levels are easy to navigate too, making extended chunks of otherwise difficult areas a romp down easy street. On top of that is Halo 3’s more forgiving health system and the fact that The Arbiter is often alongside the player, drawing fire away from them without much risk.

Halo Reach

Much like ODST, Halo Reach has certain areas trivialized with invincible allies, but most of the time, the player is on their own. Halo Reach sports extraordinarily strong enemies with loads of variety. Normal combat encounters often put players at a disadvantage, with high-ranking Covenant almost always rushing the player in large numbers, combined with most levels being rather large. It ups the ante from other games in the series as well with extended vehicle levels that are nothing short of painful to finish. “Long Night of Solace” is definitely the toughest of Halo Reach’s offerings, but most other levels don’t hold back any punches either.

Halo 4

Halo 4 really hits hard with the new Promethean enemies. Although the crawlers are easy to pick off with headshots, Knights are another story. Most Knights helm a ridiculous amount of health and often sport long-range weapons that can kill the player in an instant. The game’s difficulty severely ramps up, though due to severely low ammo counts for weapons and several levels helming open combat arenas. A good chunk of them also mix Covenant and Promethean enemies against the player. Certain levels have large portions that can be skipped via easy to execute glitches, but that still doesn’t make the overall game easy.

Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo Every Legendary Campaign Ranked

Despite its more simplistic nature, Halo: Combat Evolved is a pretty hard game to finish on Legendary. Although there are a good amount of overpowered weapons in the game’s roster (notably the pistol), Combat Evolved’s open-ended level design, lack of cover, the constant need for medkits and AI teammates really throws the player into the flames.

Combat Evolved doesn’t have much in the way of overpowered enemies, but the real difficulty spike comes from The Flood and the lacking weapon sandbox. Without access to Covenant rocket launchers and the energy sword, many of Combat Evolved’s large levels can be a serious test of patience — especially The Library.

Halo 2

Halo 2’s Legendary difficulty is one of (if not the) hardest first-person-shooter campaigns to ever exist. It’s a lengthy campaign that constantly throws players into undesirable situations, including large, open areas filled with one-hit-kill snipers with dead-eye accuracy, Covenant Elites sporting shields seemingly made of titanium, literally everything about The Flood and the fact that enemies shoot faster than the player can, melting shields and killing the player in a fraction of a second. To say Halo 2 is unfair is a severe understatement.

Most other Halo games provide options that ease the difficulty of Legendary by bringing another player along. While Halo 2 can be a made tad easier with another player, if anyone dies, it’s immediately back to the last checkpoint — which is often frustrating thanks to Halo 2’s poor checkpoint system. On top of all that, every single level in Halo 2 has something that will make you want to rip your hair out.
