Halo Infinite What Happened to the UNSC During Master Chiefs Disappearance

Taking place over a year after the events of Halo 5: Guardians, Halo Infinite leaves fans with quite a few mysteries as to what happened during that span of time. The remnants of the UNSC forces on Zeta Halo are scattered and in disarray, having effectively lost a lengthy conflict with the Banished. Not much info on this losing battle is given through the story, but the map is scattered with UNSC and Spartan audio recordings that give a clear timeline on when and how events unfolded.

In an effort to stop Cortana and her Guardians, the UNSC hatched a daring plan to trap the rogue AI at Zeta Halo so she could then be deleted. For this, the supercarrier class UNSC Infinity and a small escort fleet were sent to the Ring, along with thousands of Marines and dozens of Spartans, including the Chief. On Dec 12, 2559, as soon as they arrived at the Ring, they were ambushed by a fleet of Banished Dreadnoughts. The Infinity was heavily damaged and boarded by a large force of troops led by Atriox himself.

When it became clear that Infinity was lost, Captain Lasky gave the order to abandon ship. Master Chief remained in the hangar area to hold off the Banished while personnel evacuated to the surface. Lasky himself was escorted to a Falcon to get to safety, though he’s nowhere to be found on the Ring and is considered MIA. The fate of the Infinity is also unconfirmed, with theories that the Banished are using its wreckage for their own goals, or it might have crash-landed somewhere on the Ring.

Once survivors began landing on the Ring, they immediately engaged in ground battles against the Banished who’d already landed a large invasion force complete with fortresses and anti-aircraft guns. But later, on that same day, chaos erupted for both sides as a massive explosion fragmented a section of the Ring, creating floating islands and taking out both UNSC and Banished as the ground beneath their feet collapsed. At the same time, the Ring and any nearby ships in orbit were teleported to an unknown quadrant of space, stranding both sides with no way home. The explosion provided some reprieve for the UNSC as the Banished Leader Atriox was apparently killed, giving them the time to regroup.

The survivor’s main base of operations was a crashed UNSC Frigate named Mortal Reverie, to the northernmost edge of the map. With Captain Lasky and the Master Chief MIA, Spartan Griffin of Fireteam Taurus became the de facto leader of the survivors. Since the Banished held space superiority and heavily outnumbered the UNSC, a plan was made to destabilize the Banished by assassinating their new leader, War Chief Escharum. However, the War Chief anticipated this and with his specially trained “Spartan Killers”, wiped out the Spartan team save for Griffin, who sent a warning to the Reverie about an incoming attack before being captured and taken to the Tower to be tortured.

Despite their best efforts, the UNSC defenders of the Reverie were forced to retreat and go into hiding in the face of overwhelming Banished forces. Many marines would be captured and imprisoned by the Banished, either to be used as forced labor or interrogate them on any surviving UNSC forces. On March 3rd, 2560, the UNSC would lose control of all their remaining Forward Operating Bases.

Since conventional warfare was now unwinnable, the surviving marines, led by the few remaining Spartans, followed the Rubicon Protocol over the next several months, engaging in guerilla warfare to do everything they could to deny the Banished control of the Ring. It was during this time that below the crashed Reverie, the Banished uncovered a Forerunner prison housing an alien being called the Harbinger. Escharum and the Harbinger would create an alliance with the goal of repairing the Ring to make it operational again.

At this point, it was undeniable that the Banished had achieved near total victory, with the majority of Spartans dead and marines either captured or fighting for survival. A few Spartans would attempt last-ditch missions to uncover what the Banished and the Harbinger were planning, but they too fell to the Spartan Killers. The only Spartan who made it Ringside who might still be alive is Spartan Horvath of Fireteam Intrepid. The only survivor of his team, he decided to venture to other distant sections of the Ring to look for other UNSC forces. Before ending his message, he made a plea to the still missing Chief that they needed his help, now more than ever.
