Halo: Reach Beta Multiplayer Modes Revealed

As you may or may not have known, Halo: Reach will feature a number of new online game modes (and of course, new maps) for your multiplayer enjoyment.

All of the staples still remain, like Slayer, King of the Hill, Free For All etc., but the Reach Beta will feature four new modes.

The new modes are Headhunter, Stockpile, Generator Defense, and Invasion.

Let’s get down to the details.

Headhunter

The objective of headhunter is to collect skulls (which are dropped by players after they die), and return them to a designated area of the map that regularly changes locations. If a player is killed while carrying multiple skulls that haven’t been returned to the drop-off point, they will drop them all upon death. The number of skulls being carried by each player shows up right above their head, so you can easily prioritize who to kill. If someone is holding 10 skulls, they will show up on everyone else’s radar as a “VIP” which immediately makes them the center of attention. There will be both team based and free-for-all versions of this gametype. This mode will require skill and strategy, as it doesn’t require the winner to get the most kills, but instead to be the smartest about who they kill and how they traverse the map.

Stockpile

Stockpile starts out with four neutral flags on a map, but it isn’t a typical capture-the-flag setup. First of all, the flags don’t always spawn in the same locations. They can spawn at ~10 different locations on each map. Your job is to find those flags and return them to your team’s specific “capture territory.” Once you arrive at the capture point, your job isn’t over; flags are scored every 60 seconds, so you must make sure you flag is within that territory when the scoring timer hits. When the scoring occurs each minute, the flags randomly respawn and the madness begins once again. It was also noted that if an enemy with a flag is in your capture territory when the scoring time hits, your team steals the point for that flag. Each match is 10 minutes long, so there are 10 opportunities to score.

Generator Defense

This mode consists of two three-person teams. Three Spartans vs. three Elites. The Elites are on offense, and are tasked with destroying three generators on different points of the map before time expires. As the Spartans, you must defend your generator by whatever means possible, and hold them off to achieve a victory. When a round begins, three power weapons are dropped from the sky (Spartan laser, Sniper rifle, or Rocket launcher) at neutral locations. Another neat feature is the ability to “lock down” your generator on defense. All you have to do is go up to the generator and press the X button, which give that specific generator 30 seconds of invincibility. Be careful though, because after each period of invincibility, there is a cool-down time until you can lock it down again. Each team plays offense and defense each match, and rounds are limited to five minutes.

Invasion

Not much is know about this mode yet, but Bungie has revealed that the emphasis of it will be vehicular combat. It’ll be six-on-six and will be played on huge maps.

I love that Bungie always comes up with new and innovative game modes, even if some of them are simple tweaks on old favorites. They almost always are a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to check them out when the Halo: Reach Beta hits on May 3rd.
