NBC’S Hannibal only ran for three seasons and has been off the air for many years, but it still has one of the most dedicated fan bases around. After the show was released on Netflix, fans and the show’s creators were given new hope for a fourth season, but nothing has officially been announced yet.

While fans still work and hope for more of this critically-acclaimed series, they can still enjoy the complex relationship between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter. Their disturbing relationship became surprisingly more and more romantic making for one of the most compelling and darkly beautiful relationships ever portrayed on television, but there’s no denying this dynamic absolutely twisted.

10 Disturbing: The times Hannibal Abuses His Therapy With Will

Hannibal definitely gives all psychiatrists a bad name, and he’s known for going outside the lines when it comes to his practice, even when it doesn’t come to murder.

There are multiple times throughout the series where he takes advantage of his therapy with Will, whether to manipulate Will’s grasp on reality or to try to set him up to be the killer Hannibal believes him to be, this is absolutely terrifying and inexcusable.

9 Romantic: The Achilles and Patroclus reference

While the relationship between Hannibal and Will, known as Hannigram by fans, might not have started out as being romantic, these two were always drawn to one another. Hannibal seemed to fall in love with Will rather quickly, not that it stopped him from doing awful things to Will, while Will took longer to catch on.

One notable romantic reference that many fans love happened in season two when Hannibal compares himself and Will to Achilles and Patroclus.

8 Disturbing: Hannibal leaving a “broken heart” for Will

When a serial killer falls in love with you, it’s usually not a very positive thing. But, Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character who does things that even a real murderer probably wouldn’t do.

His murder “tableaux” can seem artistic and beautiful, and they are often symbolic, too. When he kills Anthony Dimmond, he leaves behind his body in the shape of a heart as a sign for Will Graham.

7 Romantic: Hannibal rescuing Will from Muskrat Farm

Hannibal isn’t someone you can ever really predict. While he does seem to love Will in whatever way it’s possible for him to feel that emotion, he can also turn on him when he feels betrayed or wants to save himself. So, while in the previous episode he was about to kill Will himself, he ends up saving his life.

After Alana Bloom’s urging, Hannibal saves Will from Mason Verger and then the bridal carries him across the snow. This is also a reference to Hannibal doing the same thing to Clarice in the films. So, if one can ignore what happened before, it’s pretty damn romantic.

6 Disturbing: When Hannibal frames Will and gets him sent to prison

In season one of the series, Will is more of the victim in this relationship, but he doesn’t stay that way for long. However, at this stage, he is suffering from encephalitis and doesn’t know it.

This condition is causing him to think he is losing his mind, and Hannibal is manipulating him all along into this conclusion. Hannibal frames Will for the murders of the Chesapeake Ripper, and he gets him sent to prison. Hannibal seems to regret sending his potential paramour to jail eventually, but all of his actions in season one are pretty messed up.

5 Romantic: “I could never entirely predict you.”

With this relationship, even the most romantic moments usually have an undercurrent of something really wrong, as is the case with this season from the episode “Su-zakana” in season two.

Hannibal is clearly delighted after Will almost kills a murderer named Clark Ingram, and he responds by saying this line and gently cupping Will’s face. It’s a very erotic scene, but it’s also not what you’d normally call romantic.

4 Disturbing: When Hannibal tries to cut Will’s head open

One scene that has disturbed all viewers, including die-hard fans of the series and the ship, is when Hannibal uses a handsaw to try to cut open Will’s head. While he only goes so far as to make a small cut before both he and Will are captured, he seemed intent on actually killing him.

This was an obvious nod to the scene from the film, Hannibal, but it didn’t entirely make sense even in the messed up context of Hannibal and Will’s relationship. It does seem, however, that Hannibal was willing to kill Will after Will’s betrayal at the end of season two.

3 Romantic: Sitting together in front of the Primavera painting

After the devastation of the season two finale, season three has Will traveling alone to Europe to track down Hannibal. And, while he claims to be doing this to bring justice to Hannibal, their scenes once they reunite in Italy are some of the most romantic.

They sit together in front of the beautiful painting while Hannibal tells Will, “If I saw you every day forever, Will. I would remember this time.”

2 Disturbing: Hannibal killing Abigail Hobbs and gravely injuring Jack and Will

Fans of the series were absolutely gutted themselves when they watched the season two finale, “Mizumono.” After Hannibal learns that Will Graham has been working with Jack Crawford and that Will doesn’t intend to run away with Hannibal, he lashes out immensely.

He nearly kills Jack and Alana, directly and indirectly, and he brutally murders Abigail Hobbs. This is basically akin to him murdering their adopted daughter in front of Will, and he then goes on to gut Will to punish him for this betrayal.

1 Romantic: When they went over the cliff together

The final scene of the series is one that fans and critics will never forget, and it’s also one moment where the disturbing but beautiful nature of this couple was at its peak.

After taking down the Red Dragon together, the two embrace, and Will pushes them both over the cliff, meaning to kill them both. While they are supposed to have survived the fall, it was a fitting semi-end for their story.
