Harley Quinn Cosplay Shows Harleen Quinzel Before and After Joker

A beautiful cosplay of Harley Quinn/Harleen Quinzel from @cllownin captures two of the character’s iconic looks. It highlights the way she was before and after becoming involved with the Joker, presenting both of her personas. The character has come a long way since separating from him, but her early adventures will always be defined by his involvement in her life.

Harley Quinn first debuted in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. She made her official comic debut in Batman: Harley Quinn #1 in 1999. She quickly became a fan-favorite and she remains a highly popular cosplay choice year after year. While Harley has shifted from villainess to heroine as of late, her early days are integral to her character and will always include some of Harley’s best looks.

On Reddit, @cllownin shared a picture placing Dr. Harleen Quinzel side by side with her future persona, Harley Quinn. The cosplayer is a huge fan of Harley Quinn, sharing many different looks from the movies and comics, as well as taking on related characters like Poison Ivy. This dual cosplay is stunning and it perfectly captures Harley’s fall – even including a poster of The Joker (2019) in the background, low-key hinting at the cause of her change. She went from being a successful psychiatrist to being Joker’s right-hand enforcer as part of Gotham’s criminal element. Check out @cllownin’s gorgeous cosplay here:

The left image is of Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a highly educated and hard-working psychiatrist. Like other depictions of Harleen, this cosplay includes a red shirt and also adds a black tie underneath her coat – maintaining Harley’s iconic color scheme. This is one of the easiest ways to tell Harleen Quinzel cosplays apart from any other characters that share her affinity for professional medical attire. The portrayal is juxtaposed with a classic Harley look, complete with jester cap and domino mask.

Instead of her usual suit, this cosplay takes notes from The Batman Adventures: Mad Love #1, the one-shot comic that introduced Harley’s origin story. This comic was inspired by the animated series and had the creative team of Paul Dini, Bruce W. Timm, Glen Murakami, Rick Taylor, and Tim Harkins. Mad Love is one of Harley’s most iconic comic storylines and @cllownin’s cosplay captures the essence of it beautifully. Harley is seen in her nightie, which was used in the comic alongside a memorable question to Joker, “Don’t ya wanna rev up your Harley?” This comic was eventually adapted into an episode of Batman: The Animated Series, complete with the quote, which flew over many young heads at the time.

Notable in this cosplay is the use of black lipstick in both portrayals, creating an additional visual connection between the two personas. As of late, Harley Quinn has – thankfully – been distancing herself from the Joker. Their abusive relationship, while initially played for both laughs and tragedy, came under increasing scrutiny from readers, and Harley’s growing popularity made it clear she was more than capable of standing on her own. She is now a multi-faceted character with her own dreams outside of Joker’s plans. However, Joker is tied to her most important stories, integral to her origin and the part of her life for which she’s still seeking redemption.

Harley’s fall was brought about by her fascination with Joker and his manipulation of her – but even if she becomes a true hero, her transformation cannot be completely undone. Joker may have been the reason Dr. Harleen Quinzel became Harley Quinn, but as DC continues to explore her history and psychology, Harley is definitively her own person, and a hero worth celebrating in awesome cosplay from creators like @cllownin.
