Harley Quinns True Arch Nemesis is Jokers Forgotten Sidekick

While Harley Quinn may have spent the last several years forging her own identity, elements of her past life with the Joker continue to haunt her. Harley spent years alternating between independence and returning to the Joker but eventually was able to break the mold and stand on her own, free of his influence. However, the same can not be said for someone who filled the role of Joker’s sidekick decades before Harley Quinn.

The series Gotham City Sirens came out in the wake of “Batman R.I.P”, a storyline that was tied into Bruce Wayne’s “death” in Final Crisis. The comic was released under the “Batman: Reborn” banner that established a new status quo for Gotham. Not only was Dick Grayson now Batman, but heroes like Batwoman and Stephanie Brown took on larger roles to keep Gotham safe. With such a massive shake-up, the Batman line of comics was primed for villains to take the spotlight and the trio of Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Harley Quinn did just that in a team-up book that explored their past, present and futures.

Harley would get a massive examination of her past starting in Gotham City Sirens #4 by Paul Dini and Guillem March. After a long absence, the Joker returns after seeing Harley on television cavorting with Bruce Wayne (in actuality Hush taking Bruce’s place). The Joker attempts to get Harley to return to him, despite the protests of Catwoman and Poison Ivy, whose words fall on deaf ears as she goes back with her beloved Mr. J. However, the entire thing is a ruse and the “Joker” reveals himself to be Gagsworth A. Gagsworthy, the original sidekick of the Joker.

Gagsworth or “Gaggy” was Joker’s personal jester and assistant from the Silver Age and after appearing in Batman #186, he hardly ever appeared again. In-universe, Gaggy is a faded failure who clings desperately to his glory days by the Joker’s side. He resents Harley for usurping his role as the Joker’s partner and blames her for the Clown Prince of Crime’s transition from comical baddie to killer-with-a-smile. His ultimate plan is to eliminate Harley to bring the feeling of “the old days” back. But with the assistance of her friends, Harley sends the has-been packing on one of Joker’s old rockets, out of her life and back into irrelevance.

The experience of coming face-to-face with another sidekick that has such a devotion to the Joker was a wake-up call for Harley. Seeing the sad life Gaggy led without the Joker around was one of the first real times Harley Quinn contemplated how her behavior towards her Mr. J came off to others. Archenemies are often a dark reflection of a character’s personal journey, so for Harley Quinn, Gaggy fits that role much better than the Joker.
