Not only is Harrison Ford a believable tough guy, but he’s a phenomenal actor as well. His real life exploits often aren’t too far away from an action movie either. As an expert pilot, he has participated in several rescue operations for stranded hikers.
At seventy-seven years old, he’s still working hard in the film industry, with a new Indiana Jones film expected sometime in the future. As a celebration of the man’s immense talent, we have taken it upon ourselves to rank his ten most badass roles. These aren’t necessarily his best roles, but simply the ones where he kicks the most butt.
10 Drummer (The Expendables 3)
When Bruce Willis exited the Expendables franchise over a financial disagreement, fans were left wondering just who could take his place. Stallone managed to outdo all expectations by calling up Ford and getting him on board. He starts his appearance with a cute quip about Church (Bruce Willis’s character) being “out of the picture.”
Later on, he saves the day by swooping in with a helicopter during the climactic battle. It’s unfortunate The Expendables 3 is generally seen as the weakest entry in the franchise by far, but perhaps he’ll show up once more in the next Expendables, if it ever comes to pass.
9 Jack Stanfield (Firewall)
Firewall saw Ford return to an action role for the first time since the turn of the millennium. He plays a security expert whose family is kidnapped by criminals in an attempt to force him into robbing the bank he works for.
Instead of following their orders, he turns the tables on them and goes on the offensive, in typical action hero fashion. Admittedly, it’s perhaps not the greatest production Ford’s starred in (especially compared to the actor’s more iconic roles), but it proved he could still bring the hurt later in life.
In between Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope and its sequel, Ford starred in Force 10 From Navarone as Barnsby. The film is a sequel to the 1961 epic The Guns of Navarone, but retains none of the original cast.
The sequel also didn’t manage to become a classic like its predecessor, but it is worth watching to see a young Harrison Ford not being Han Solo. Guy Hamilton directed it, the man behind several Bond films, including Goldfinger. This one may not have set the action movie world alight, but it is certainly a solid adventure.
7 Dr. Richard Kimble (The Fugitive)
The Fugitive was based on a 1960s television show of the same name, and even has the same plot about the main character being framed for the murder of his wife. Ford plays an everyman trying to clear his name after escaping from prison.
Hot on his tail is Tommy Lee Jones, who famously doesn’t care whether or not Dr. Kimble killed his wife. All in all, The Fugitive is an exciting movie from start to finish, which still holds up more than twenty-five years later.
6 John Book (Witness)
Witness sees Harrison Ford playing John Book as he protects a young Amish boy who recently witnessed the murder of an undercover police officer. Not only does he give bad guys the classic action hero treatment, but his character also shows skill in carpentry, thus earning the respect of the Amish community.
Ford himself worked as a carpenter before becoming famous, so it looks like those skills came in handy during his acting career. John Book might be a silly name, but the movie is a classic 80s thriller.
5 Jack Ryan
Harrison Ford had too much badass for just one Jack Ryan movie, so they let him star in both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. He was the second actor to play Ryan, after Alex Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October.
Opinions may differ as to who played him best, but most people can agree the three films are all better than The Sum of All Fears. Fans of the book generally disagree with Ford’s portrayal of the character and the two movies’ lack of depth, but they are entertaining enough for a general audience.
4 Rick Deckard
Waiting from 1983 to 2015 to see Harrison Ford play Han Solo once more is nothing, compared to the thirty-five year wait people endured to see him play Rick Deckard again.
The first film is an all-time classic, and the sequel might be remembered just as fondly. It’s unfortunate that the sequel bombed at the box office, though, making any future continuation of the story unlikely. Still, the fact that such a bold, unique movie was produced with such a large budget is something to celebrate in itself.
3 President Marshall (Air Force One)
President Marshall takes the cake as one of the most badass fictional presidents every put to film in Air Force One. The character is able to retake his plane from terrorists because of his combat experience in Vietnam.
It is a ridiculous concept on paper, but Ford manages to make it wholly believable. Even twenty years after release, the film still holds up, save for the worst CGI plane crash of all time. However, saying that doesn’t hold up would be unfair, because it didn’t look good in 1997, either.
2 Han Solo
The role that defined his career, Han Solo was the cynical bad boy of Star Wars’ otherwise young, wide-eyed ensemble. He softens up and falls in love by the second film, but he’s still a badass until the end.
Maybe he wasn’t the best father (perhaps his son wouldn’t have turned to the dark side otherwise), but there is something particularly chivalrous about walking into certain death while trying to redeem one’s heir. Maybe that was one time where he definitely should have shot first. Regardless, though, there’s no denying that Han Solo is one of the most beloved characters in movie history.
1 Indiana Jones
Harrison Ford isn’t the only reason Raiders of the Lost Ark is seen as one of the best adventure movies ever made, but he certainly helped. The character is not indestructible, as he always takes his share of punches and bruises, but the way he brushes off injury just makes him more badass.
Some decry Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it still is a worthy addition to the franchise. We can’t wait to see what’s in store next for the character when the next Indiana Jones film starts production.
