Rubeus Hagrid is first introduced in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and is one of the main characters, unlike many other fan-favorites, who survive until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

So, with all this time to his advantage, what were Hagrid’s biggest changes throughout the series?

10 He Became A Guardian

When Hagrid was entrusted by Dumbledore to give eleven-year-old Harry his Hogwarts letter, he had in no way anticipated the abused mental and physical circumstances Harry was living in. Hagrid was the first person to perform magic in front of Harry and say the much-quoted words “yer a wizard.”

He kindly revealed to the young boy his famous past and the reason for his parents’ death. And it also can’t be forgotten that it was Hagrid who gave Harry Hedwig. Their friendship is an endearing one, with Hagrid becoming Harry’s first real Guardian and showing him unconditional love and support throughout the series.

9 He Stood Up For Harry Because He Couldn’t Stand Up For Himself

When the Chamber of Secrets was first opened, Tom Riddle was responsible. A young, suave, teacher-favorite. But Riddle framed Hagrid, leading to his expulsion and his forbidden use of magic. It was only through Dumbledore’s insistence that Hagrid was allowed to stay on as a trainee to the Game Keeper.

This injustice shaped Hagrid’s life. So naturally, when an innocent Harry is taking the heat for the Chamber being opened once more, Hagrid runs to Dumbledore’s office, ready to defend his friend. But Dumbledore knew as he did for Hagrid, that Harry was not involved and assured them both that neither was responsible.

8 He Was Freed From His Accusations

Hagrid was sent to Azkaban in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. But as he was being escorted, with Dumbledore by his side and the Minister of Magic overseeing it all, he uttered a line that changed everything.

For when Harry and Ron decided to “Follow the spiders,” it was then that Aragog revealed Hagrid’s innocence and the two wizards understood that spiders flee before the true monster of the Chamber. From this clue, the mystery of who opened the Chamber was solved and after 50 years Hagrid was finally freed from his false accusations.

7 He Became A Teacher

Everyone knows that Hagrid loves magical creatures. Norbert (renamed Norberta by Charlie Weasly) the Dragon, Aragog the Acromantula and Buckbeak the Hippogriff are just to name a few of his befriended beasties. Seeing Hagrid as Professor of Care of Magical Creatures and using his passion in another aspect of his life is truly a joy to witness.

Many fans love to speculate whether Hagrid and Newt Scamander were friends and how they would interact, as they are both very similar. One theory is that Newt gave Hagrid Aragog when Aragog says that he “came to Hagrid from a distant land, in the pocket of a traveler.”

6 He Accessed The Romantic Within Him

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire is perhaps one of the most dramatic and fanciful of the series. It is where the first sparks of romance are shown for most of the protagonists. Cedric and Cho, Harry’s feelings for Cho, Ron and his confusion towards Hermione being close to Krum, Ginny and Neville dancing all night, and of course Hagrid and Madame Olympe Maxime.

In true father-son spirit, Harry gags under the invisibility cloak as Hagrid, with his newly combed hair, flirts with Olympe. Harry asked in bewilderment, “Hagrid, have you combed your hair?” and Hagrid responded, “As a matter of fact, I have. You might like to try the same thing now and again.” Oh, Hagrid there’s no need to be so defensive, romance is a good color on you.

5 He Went On A Mission To The Giant Colony

Hagrid’s absence is quite sizeable to everyone who loves him. His hut has no smoke coming out of the chimney, and his friendly presence is missed around the school grounds. When he returns, and only then, he reveals to the wondering trio that he was sent on a mission by Dumbledore to travel the Giant Colonies of Eastern Europe with Madame Maxime and convince them to help the Order.

This is a big deal for a half-giant. Umbridge, being the nosey informant for the Ministry and suspicious of his whereabouts, visits, and questions Hagrid. Hagrid gives a rather weak excuse for his bloodied features and is later attacked, retreating into hiding.

4 He Became Better At Keeping Secrets

It’s a known fact that Hagrid has some trouble keeping his friendly chatter from rambling into serious territory. The proof is revealed to us early on in Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, when he is talking about how he was given Norbert from a stranger in the Hog’s Head Pub in Hogsmead after sharing a common interest in magical creatures.

Little did he know that he had told the stranger who was really Professor Quirrell and Voldemort, how to get past Fluffy. Hagrid also accidentally tells the trio a clue about what Fluffy is protecting. But Hagrid shows that he can keep quiet if he needs to, even if the lie is a little pathetic when Umbridge comes calling.

3 He Found Family

While in the Giant Colony, Hagrid discovers that he has a half-brother named Grawp. Not wanting to leave him behind, he brings him back to Hogwarts and hides him inside the Forbidden Forest. Grawp is harmless, but after having been abandoned by his and Hagrid’s mother, he was left to the violent upbringing of his rather larger giant colony members.

Hagrid makes it his responsibility to look after his family and teach him how to live among others. Throughout the series, Grawp saves the trio from Umbridge, attends Dumbledore’s funeral and takes part in the battle of Hogwarts, finally being accepted by those around him.

2 Lost A Dear Friend

For many people, especially those with arachnophobia, it’s difficult to understand Hagrid and his friendship with a giant Acromantula. But maybe that’s the beauty of this friendship, of any friendship, that the connection doesn’t have to make any sense, but simply resonates around the central factor of unconditional love.

So when Hagrid has to say goodbye to his friend of 5o years, he mourns with Harry and Slughorn by his side, and even though they were there with other intentions, they were a source of support in the end. Hagrid would later, alongside the entire wizarding world, mourn the death of his close friend Albus Dumbledore.

1 Comes Full Circle

Hagrid delivered a baby Harry to the Dursley’s doorstep on Sirus Black’s motorcycle, introduced him to the magical world, supports him in life and is the one to hold him in death. While Dumbledore is waiting for Hagrid to bring Harry, McGonagall asks him, “You think it – wise – to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?” in which Dumbledore responds, “I would trust Hagrid with my life.”

Hagrid has always been loyal and loving despite dealing with the prejudice that comes with being a half-giant, grieving his father’s death and having been abandoned by his mother. So maybe the biggest way Hagrid changed was growing strong mentally and being grounded in his faith that things will always be okay.
