Harry Potter: 10 Confirmed Hogwarts Houses Of Secondary Characters That Weren’t Given In The Books (Including Quirrell)

The Hogwarts Houses of many of the Harry Potter characters are well known – but what about the secondary characters?

In the two decades since the first Harry Potter novel was released, author JK Rowling created an expansive world filled with interesting characters and situations. There was also a wide variety of locations, which included Diagon Alley, Gringotts Bank and, of course, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students of Hogwarts, such as Harry, are sorted into one of four Houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Despite all the years that the Wizarding World has existed in fans’ imaginations, there are still some characters’ Hogwarts Houses that are not common knowledge. Here are ten confirmed Sortings of secondary characters in the novels.

10 Quirinus Quirrell: Ravenclaw

Played by Ian Hart in the first film, Quirrell was Harry’s turban-wearing Defence Against The Dark Arts professor during his first year at Hogwarts. While appearing to be a frightened, timid man, he was revealed in the story’s climax to be a follower of Lord Voldemort, an attempted murderer of Harry and sharing a body with his master who had been obscured under the turban.

Despite his nefarious intentions, Quirrell was not a member of the notorious Slytherin House, instead, being sorted into Ravenclaw. Quirrell’s actions prove that all Dark Wizards do not necessarily originate from Slytherin.

9 Sybill Trelawney: Ravenclaw

Sybill Trelawney, played by Emma Thompson, is Harry’s eccentric Divination professor. She first appeared in the Prisoner of Azkaban and plays a vital role in the series by delivering a prophecy that affected the fates of major characters such as Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, and Neville Longbottom.

Aside from this, Sybill plays a relatively minor role in the overall series. Her past was not explored in great detail over the course of the books. There are very few insights into her life outside being the Divination Professor.

It has been confirmed, however, that Sybill was a member of Ravenclaw House during her time at Hogwarts.

8 Albus Severus Potter: Slytherin

Albus Severus, Harry’s second child, and younger son. He makes a brief appearance at the end of the Deathly Hallows book as he sets off to Hogwarts for his first year. Beyond that, what happened to him next was unknown for many years.

In the stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Albus is one of the primary characters. His relationship with his famous father and the pressure that comes with such a legacy is explored in depth. Furthermore, Albus’ time at Hogwarts is finally seen; he is sorted into Slytherin, atypical of a Potter family member.

7 Gilderoy Lockhart: Ravenclaw

Gilderoy Lockhart, a celebrity wizard, was Harry’s Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in Chamber of Secrets. He was played by Kenneth Branagh in the film adaptation and later reappears in the Order of the Phoenix novel, as a patient at St Mungo’s Hospital.

Of course, one of the biggest twists in Chamber of Secrets was Lockhart being exposed as a deceitful fraud and not the heroic adventurer that he had claimed to be. While his lack of bravery may obviously disqualify him from being a Gryffindor, his cunning nature did not place him in Slytherin.

It was later revealed by JK Rowling that Lockhart had been sorted into Ravenclaw while a student at Hogwarts. This makes sense. Lockhart used his intelligence to manipulate other wizards and fabricate a luxurious life for himself.

6 Rose Granger-Weasley: Gryffindor

Daughter and eldest child of Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley. Much like her cousin, Albus Severus Potter, Rose plays a minor role in the final book and is a major character in the stage play, as one of the younger generation.

Upon arriving at Hogwarts in 2017, Rose is sorted into Gryffindor, following in the footsteps of her parents, paternal grandparents, uncles and of course her Aunt Ginny and Uncle Harry. The dynamic between Rose, her Slytherin cousin Albus and his new friend, Scorpius Malfoy, is also explored throughout the play’s storyline.

5 Scorpius Malfoy: Slytherin

Son of Draco Malfoy and Astoria Greengrass, young Scorpius became the latest in a long line of Slytherins upon his Sorting at Hogwarts in 2017. However, Scorpius breaks both the traditional Slytherin and Malfoy mold. His best friend is none other than Albus Severus Potter, son of the famous Boy Who Lived.

Most of the other Malfoy families were followers of Lord Voldemort, pureblood elitists and in some cases, both. Scorpius is not only a decent person, but he also shows a romantic interest in Rose Granger-Weasley, who is descended from “blood traitors”.

4 Teddy Lupin: Hufflepuff

Edward “Teddy” Lupin is the son of deceased wizards Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks, who were a werewolf and metamorphagus, respectively. While he did not inherit his father’s lycanthropy, he does possess similar abilities to his mother.

In the overall Potter franchise, Teddy is barely featured. He is referenced by name in the epilogue of Deathly Hallows and is absent from Cursed Child. It was revealed by JK Rowling that Teddy was placed into Hufflepuff House and later became Head Boy.

3 Garrick Ollivander: Ravenclaw

Renowned wandmaker Mr. Garrick Ollivander was a staple of Diagon Alley, providing countless young wizards and witches with their most valued asset in his self-named shop. He has serviced virtually every major wizard from Harry Potter, his parents and his friends to Lord Voldemort and Severus Snape.

As for Mr. Ollivander himself, he makes only two appearances in the series – Sorcerer’s Stone and Deathly Hallows and is played by John Hurt in the respective films. Similarly to other characters, he is mostly left unexplored. Many years earlier, when Ollivander was a student himself at Hogwarts, he was a member of Ravenclaw House.

2 Dolores Umbridge: Slytherin

Former Senior Undersecretary to the Minister for Magic (under Cornelius Fudge, Rufus Scrimgeour, and Pius Thicknesse) as well as the one-time High Inquisitor and Headmistress of Hogwarts, there is no denying that Dolores Umbridge was a piece of work. Known for her love of cats, devotion to the Ministry and later, her deranged and psychopathic personality.

One of Harry Potter’s most formidable antagonists, Imelda Staunton brought her to life in the films. While at Hogwarts, Umbridge was in Slytherin and did not have a good experience at school, hiding her half-blood heritage and Squib brother as well as being overlooked for positions of responsibility and power, which she craved.

1 Nymphadora Tonks: Hufflepuff

Wife of Remus Lupin and mother of Teddy, Tonks preferred to be known by her surname. A close ally of Harry Potter, Auror, and a member of the revived Order of the Phoenix, Tonks was a key character in the final three books of the series. Unlike other Order members including Harry, Albus Dumbledore, the Weasley family, her cousin Sirius Black and husband Remus, Tonks was not part of Gryffindor.

Instead, Tonks was a Hufflepuff, whose loyalty to her family and friends was evident. She also attended Hogwarts at the same time as Ron’s older brother Charlie Weasley, graduating the year before Harry, Ron, and Hermione arrived. She lost her life in the Battle of Hogwarts and her son was left an orphan. By naming Harry Potter as Teddy’s godfather, events had come full circle with Harry being able to watch over Teddy as the child’s parents had done for him.
