Back in the summer of 2017, in anticipation of the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, J.K. Rowling released information on the “American Hogwarts,” Ilvermorny.

Located on Mount Greylock outside of Boston, Ilvermorny was founded by a witch who came over on the Mayflower, and her house system, while basic, outlined an interesting and different way of sorting people into houses. Rather than sorting you based on why you do the things that you do – what your core motivation is – Ilvermorny sorts you based on how you go about doing them.

The details that Rowling gave were bare bones, but many fans have decided to ignore any further additions she makes to the canon anyway. As a result, fans have banded together on the internet to embellish upon what was already there, and create a more full picture of what each of the houses at Ilvermorny would be like.

Of course, one of the most interesting things to do is to try and sort people into these houses, and there might be no more interesting people to sort than the ones who are already the main characters of the original Harry Potter books. How would the houses differ if the story took place in America instead?

10 Cedric Diggory: Pukwudgie

Cedric Diggory was a true renaissance man, which is why he’d have a heck of a time getting sorted at Ilvermorny. At the American wizarding school, the statues that represent the houses point at you if they want you, and you, the student, get to pick which one you join. As someone who gets competitive and gets good grades, but also loves exploring and helping others, it’s quite possible that Cedric would have all four houses to choose from.

However, in the end, service-minded, kind Cedric would probably go with Pukwudgie, the house of the heart, which favors healers. As someone who is always willing to give more of himself, even when he has nothing to gain, he’d probably feel the most at home in that house.

9 Cho Chang: Horned Serpent

Cho Chang ended up in Ravenclaw in the Harry Potter books because she was smart, resourceful, studious, and understood the value of learning and maintaining good grades above all else. At Ilvermorny, she’d thrive in Horned Serpend, the house of the mind, that favors scholars.

She’d stay at the top of her class, and might end up doing even better surrounded my a house of people who are just as focused and studious as she. She might get a little competitive, but she’d have friends in other houses to iron that out (like Cedric).

8 Draco Malfoy: Wampus

There is no “Slytherin” at Ilvermorny; there is no house where students are labeled as “evil” or “trouble” once they’re sorted into it. This means that at Ilvermorny, Draco might actually have had a chance to grow into someone better before almost being killed as revenge against his father.

Draco Malfoy was a good student, so Horned Serpent would definitely be an option for him. However, he’s also got a competitive and enduring spirit, one that has weathered harsh parental expectations and pressure and still thrived. His desire for continued competition would probably land him in Wampus, house of the body, that favors warriors.

7 Fred & George Weasley: Thunderbird

No matter what country they’re in, one thing would never change: Fred and George would always end up in the same house. And while Wampus might have some claim on these two warriors for their bravery and steadfastness, the truth is, there is no house for them besides Thunderbird.

Thunderbird, the house of the soul, favors adventurers, and that’s exactly what Fred and George are. These two love nothing more than to explore, experiment, and try new things together – so much so that they left Hogwarts always and started a business based on that love. A house like Thunderbird would be exactly what these two need to feel free to explore (and test out their inventions).

6 Neville Longbottom: Pukwudgie

Neville may have ended up in Gryffindor at Hogwarts, and given how brave he ended up being, that was definitely the right choice for him under those circumstances.

However, at Ilvermorny, there would be no house better matched to Neville Longbottom than Pukwudgie. This house is for healers and gentle spirits, and that’s him to a T. He’d thrive in this house of mom friends and future wizard doctors, and his love of herbology would come to him much more quickly and naturally here – he wouldn’t feel nervous and like he didn’t belong, but also wouldn’t feel like he ended up in the “lame house.”

5 Luna Lovegood: Thunderbird

Luna ended up in Ravenclaw at Hogwarts because of her quirkiness, originality, and her unique way of looking at the world. At Ilvermorny, there’s a house for people exactly like her, and that’s Thunderbird.

Luna would never feel out of place in a house full of other wide-eyed dreamers who are always exploring and looking for new ways to do things or new things to entertain them – and she’d also never be bored. She may have gotten along alright in Ravenclaw, but she would absolutely thrive in a house like Thunderbird.

4 Ginny Weasley: Wampus

Ginny Weasley is fiery, tenacious, and never gives up on anything or anyone she believes in – and that’s what makes her a textbook Wampus warrior.

She might do well in a house like Pukwudgie, for her tendency to look after other people’s emotional well-being, or Thunderbird, for her willingness to be a pioneer and do things before anyone else, but there’s truly only one place that her strong will and tough temperament belong, and that’s in Wampus – probably as a key member of the Quidditch team.

3 Hermione Granger: Horned Serpent

If there’s one sorting from this group that’s a no-brainer, it’s that Hermione belongs in Horned Serpent. At Hogwarts, she ended up in Gryffindor because, although she’s very smart, and values learning, she values bravery and standing up for others more. At Ilvermorny, you are not sorted based on your values, but rather how you embrace those values – and more often than not, Hermione embraces hers through learning and preparation.

She’d fit right in with the other bookworms in Horned Serpent, and would love spending time in their quiet, peaceful common room – but after a while, she would probably get bored and end up seeking the companionship of her friends in other houses.

2 Ron Weasley: Wampus

Ron Weasley, who could have been sorted into Hufflepuff for his loyalty almost as easily as he was sorted into Gryffindor, would be a very easy Wampus. Though his desire to break the mold and try new things would give him Thunderbird as an option, ultimately his desire for glory would win out, and he’d pick Wampus.

It would be a good choice: Wampus would tap into Ron’s competitive nature much earlier than Gryffindor did, which, while it might create some more fights, would ultimately be good for him and encourage him to grow and try things outside of his comfort zone.

1 Harry Potter: Wampus

Harry Potter would probably seriously consider choosing Thunderbird, for his desire to try new things and explore the world (especially the wizarding world), at his Ilvermorny sorting ceremony.

However, there would be something about the draw of the Wampus, the warrior, that would speak to him because if there is one thing that is consistent in every book, it’s that Harry’s a warrior. No matter what he’s going through, he sticks it out and bears the burden as well as he can. Wampus would put him in a house full of people like that, and they’d become his family (and their Quidditch team would inevitably kick butt every year.)
