10 Harry Talks To The Snake

While there is clear magic in the opening scenes, where Dumbledore leaves baby Harry with the Dursleys, the first scene that really captures just what magic can do in this world is when Harry goes to the zoo with his cousin – and discovers some of what he is able to do. The scene where he talks to the snake, and then traps Dudley behind the snake enclosure glass, is brilliant not just because it shows Harry using magic, but because he uses it to do what every viewer wishes they could – talk to animals, and punish bullies.

9 Yer A Wizard, Harry

The attempts that Hogwarts makes to deliver a letter to Harry are incredible too, but they are all part of the build-up to this big magical moment, when Hagrid first makes an appearance – and manages to scare the living daylights out of the Dursleys and give Harry an adorably misspelled birthday cake in the span of only a few moments. This is also the scene where audiences first learn that not everyone in the magical world is going to look like the people in the muggle world – and opens us up to so many more possibilities.

8 The First Time In Diagon Alley

While Hagrid is the one to announce the Wizarding World’s existence to Harry, he doesn’t really grasp it until he goes to Diagon Alley – and as a result, neither do fans. But when Hagrid taps the bricks, and the scene opens up to a bustling street packed with magical people, creatures, and items, it is a moment that truly transports the audience into a new world. It’s also a moment that fulfills a lot of childhood daydreams – that just by knowing the right magic code, it’s possible to find a whole new world.

7 Platform Nine And Three Quarters

The red train, and Platform Nine and Three Quarters, have both become iconic parts of the Harry Potter franchise – so much so that there is a dedicated installation there at the real-life King’s Cross.

And while the platform is a major part of most of the films, the first time that it appears is definitely the most magical – as Harry not only learns another secret to cross between the muggle world and the magical one, but also meets the Weasleys for the first time!

6 The Sorting Ceremony

The moment that Harry discovered what House he would be in was one that shaped his future – and became so beloved that it has become part of the video games, the focus of huge numbers of online quizzes (including an official one), and is even something that can happen at the Wizarding World park in real life. In the movie, it’s the moment that Harry sees the Great Hall, Hogwarts, the other students, and the magical Sorting Hat itself all at once, and even before fans knew what the houses meant, they knew it was important.

5 Transfiguration

While the special effects might not hold up perfectly now, they were pretty fantastic for the time the films were released, and one of the big moments was when Ron and Harry rush to their first transfiguration class – and breathe a sigh of relief that the professor isn’t there yet, just a cat sitting on the desk. Of course, she is the professor, and seeing a cat become a human was a moment that blew fans away the first time they watched it – moreso than most of the magic lessons that involved things like floating feathers.

4 Gryffindor Beats Slytherin

Flying is something that has obvious appeal, so watching Harry become naturally talented and brilliant on a broomstick was a moment of vicarious joy for audiences.

More than that, though, the first match that he plays with the Quidditch team is where the audience gets to experience the thrill and magic of the game, and the vicarious thrill of being the player who wins it all!

3 Christmas At Hogwarts

For some, the Harry Potter franchise is a perfect set of movies to watch at Christmas – and part of that is that by virtue of the subject matter, they take Christmas scenes and turn up the natural seasonal ‘magic’ to an incredible degree. Harry’s first Christmas at Hogwarts has everything – laden tables, roaring fireplaces, warm stone towers with the snow falling outside. And for Harry, it also has the first sense of home he has ever had, and the first gifts he has received, as well as an actual invisibility cloak.

2 Passing The Tasks – Together

The culmination of the first film is when Harry, Ron, and Hermione end up battling their way through the ‘protections’ created by the professors, and facing off against Quirrel/Voldemort. The final scene where Harry defeats his nemesis (for now) is a powerful and dramatic one, but the more magical moments come early on, when he is working with Ron and Hermione to figure out the tasks together. It’s more visible magic than his final faceoff, but there’s obviously a magic to seeing their friendship by the end of the film.

1 Harry Learns The Meaning Of His Scar

one of the last scenes in the film is when Dumbledore comes to the hospital wing in order to speak to Harry about what happened – and while there’s a certain magic to the dynamic between the venerable professor and his young charge, it’s what he says that gets to the heart of the Harry Potter magic. He tells Harry that it is his mother’s love, and her sacrifice, that saved him – a message that will be repeated throughout the film, and contributes to its enduring legacy.
