The Harry Potter series deals heavily with death, but these ten characters managed to return after their untimely demises.

Harry Potter experiences his fair share of setbacks throughout the seven books and eight movies. He often sees those close to him die amid his ongoing battle against Lord Voldemort, making his eventual triumph over the villain that bit more satisfying by the time Deathly Hallows: Part 2 comes along.
Not everybody Harry loses stays gone, however, Some return temporarily, while others come back for good. We now take a look at 10 characters who came back from the dead throughout the series.
10 Lily Potter
We get our first glimpse of Lily Potter in the Sorcerer’s Stone movie where we see her slain by Lord Voldemort in their house at Godric’s Hollow. But, while that sadly sees her perish, actress Geraldine Somerville reprises her role on numerous occasions in the eight movies that follow.
Lily actually comes back from the dead briefly in both the Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The former is the result of Priori Incantatem, while the second occasion is due to Harry having the Resurrection Stone. Lily vows to be with her son ‘until the end’ as he prepares himself to die which, in a stunning twist, doesn’t happen.
9 James Potter
While we see Lily die in the first Harry Potter movie, we don’t actually see James Potter perish at the same time. In the books, it’s established that he actually died first trying to protect his wife and young son, something Harry hears happens when close to a Dementor.
Like his wife, James also returns in the Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows: Part 2. He lends Harry support against Lord Voldemort but, sadly, his return from the dead is only a temporary one as well.
8 Remus Lupin
Remus Lupin is one of the most heart-wrenching casualties from the Battle of Hogwarts, with JK Rowling later revealing he dies at the hands of Antonin Dolohov.
He’s another who comes back from the dead via the Resurrection Stone towards the end of the final movie in the series. Remus expresses regret that he won’t get to see his young child grow up but insists he wouldn’t change anything because, this way, his son will idolize his father for his vital role in the second wizarding war.
7 Sirius Black
Everybody thought they’d seen the last of Sirius Black when he fell through the veil at the Department of Mysteries after being killed by Bellatrix Lestrange in the Order of the Phoenix. But he’s the fourth and final person to briefly return from the dead thanks to the Resurrection Stone.
Sirius assures Harry that dying will be quick and painless, showing why he’s so popular as a result. Like his old friends, he vanishes again when Potter is struck with the killing curse by Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest.
6 Cedric Diggory
Cedric Diggory is surprisingly killed in the Goblet of Fire, being hit with the killing curse by Peter Pettigrew on Lord Voldemort’s orders. It’s a genuinely gut-wrenching moment but, thankfully, Robert Pattinson makes a return just mere minutes later.
Cedric, like Lily and James, comes out of Voldemort’s wand as a result of Priori Incantatem. He urges Harry to take his body back to his father and the Boy Who Lived is a man of his word, taking his friend’s corpse back to Hogwarts when he gets back to the Portkey.
5 Frank Bryce
Frank Bryce used to be the gardener of the Riddle House, the place where Tom Riddle’s family lived. He finds himself venturing back to the house many years later, though, after spotting the lights being on in the long-abandoned manor.
He’s killed by Voldemort after eavesdropping on the Dark Lord but joins Cedric, Lily, and James in coming out of the villain’s wand later on in the Goblet of Fire. In the book, he tells Harry to make Voldemort pay for murdering him something that, years later, the Boy Who Lived does.
4 Peter Pettigrew
Everybody thought Peter Pettigrew was killed by Sirius Black just hours after the deaths of James and Lily Potter. There were muggles who appeared to see Wormtail get blown into a million pieces as well, subjecting Sirius to years in Azkaban prison as a result.
But Peter isn’t dead after all. He faked his death to pin the murders of Lily and James on his friend instead. His scheme is unraveled when Harry, Sirius, and Remus all uncover the truth and look set to bring him to justice – only for Wormtail to escape at the last minute.
3 Barty Crouch Jr
In the Goblet of Fire book, it’s revealed how Barty Crouch Sr sent his own son, Barty Crouch Jr, to Azkaban following his hideous acts of torture on Frank and Alice Longbottom. The novel also details how the son died in prison.
Or at least, you think he does. In a big twist, it emerges that Barty Crouch Jr actually faked his death with his father reluctantly agreeing to keep him as his own prisoner via the Imperius Curse. Crouch Jr’s return from the dead is unmasked when it’s shown how he became Alastor Mad-Eye Moody, posed as the auror for a whole school year and paved the way for Harry to face Voldemort in the graveyard of Little Hangleton.
2 Albus Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore is killed by Severus Snape towards the end of the Half-Blood Prince. But, despite that, it’s not the last time we see the Hogwarts Headmaster.
When Harry is struck by the killing curse in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, he is given a final chance to speak to Dumbledore in what appears to be King’s Cross station. The duo shares a sweet exchange and Harry is given the courage to face Voldemort one last time and bring the war to an end.
1 Harry Potter
We’ve already alluded to it several times throughout this list, but Harry Potter comes extremely close to death towards the end of the series.
Voldemort actually succeeds in killing Harry but Potter, during his talk with Dumbledore, turns down the chance to actually die. He instead chooses to take the fight to the Dark Lord one final time and succeeds in bringing the villain’s rule of chaos and tyranny to an end.
