Harry Potter 10 Reasons Why Snape & Dumbledore Arent Real Friends

J.K. Rowling finished writing her celebrated Harry Potter series over a decade ago. Yet, the saga of the young wizard Harry and his friends and their ultimate triumph over evil fascinates the world even today.

One of the most complex relationships of the series, as Potter fans would surely agree, was that between Dumbledore and Snape. Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and Severus Snape, the embittered potions master and perceived-villain-turned-anti-hero of the series, had a much more curious relationship than Harry and the readers were made to see for the most part.

But were these two powerful figures actual friends? Here are 10 reasons they were more comrades of sorts rather than real friends.

10 Snape Was Not Dumbledore’s First Choice for the Coveted D.A.D.A Position

Given the degree of sacrifice that Snape was ready to make, and the kind of risk he must have taken in his role as a spy, fooling You-Know-Who for years, it seems unfair that he was not Dumbledore’s instant choice for the Defense Against the Dark Arts job at Hogwarts, a job he so coveted. Snape only teaches it temporarily when Lupin becomes a werewolf in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and then in Harry’s sixth year.

Rowling does hint at the D.A.D.A position being cursed by Voldemort himself after he was turned down for the role and Dumbledore might not have wanted to lose a valuable asset by placing him in a jinxed job. However, it’s never quite clear why such a faithful lieutenant got passed over so often for the one post he genuinely wanted.

9 Dumbledore Did Not Stop Snape from Terrorizing the Students

Despite his undoubted heroism, Snape remained the terror of the Hogwarts students throughout the series. His obvious bias towards Draco Malfoy might have been, on hindsight, a facade to maintain his cover with Voldemort. Even his apparent animosity with Harry is understandable since it was Harry’s mother, Lily, he really cared for. But his bitterness towards the rest of the students at Hogwarts seems somewhat uncalled for.

Interestingly, had Dumbledore been a friend of Snape’s he might have advised him to be more gentle with the students. Who knows, perhaps that too was part of the clever plot to keep everyone off the scent–a man who was so widely hated was the least likely to have been the one man who so willingly placed himself in the gravest of dangers for Harry’s sake.

8 Dumbledore Did Not Take Action Against Sirius Black For Almost Getting Snape Killed

In their 6th year in Hogwarts, Sirius played a dangerous practical joke on Snape which could straightaway have got him killed! He told Snape that he could follow Lupin through the passage under the Whomping Willow, knowing very well that Snape’s insatiable curiosity to know where Lupin disappeared every month would lead him to actually go through the passage where Lupin, of course, could have attacked him as a werewolf.

It seems odd that such a terrible joke which could have cost Snape his life would go unpunished by Dumbledore who was already the Headmaster at the time. With such events in the past, it is hard to believe that Dumbledore and Snape became real friends later on.

7 Snape Had Trusted Dumbledore To Keep Lily Safe

Snape had trusted Dumbledore with keeping Lily safe from Voldemort, which Dumbledore failed to do. Not only was Snape mourning Lily at the time, he must have felt betrayed by Dumbledore, the one man he must have put his faith in entirely.

We find out of course, that the two became complicit in matters later on, but it is unlikely that they formed a true friendship. It seems more likely that they had an understanding with the common objective –or so it seemed at the time–of protecting Harry.

6 Dumbledore Might Have Despised Snape At One Time

When Snape realized that the prophecy by Professor Trelawney referred to Lily Evan’s son, he desperately asked Dumbledore to hide Lily and her family from the wrath of Voldemort, but not before telling him that he had already asked the Dark Lord to spare Lily in exchange for her son.

It was at this point that Dumbledore spoke these words–“you disgust me”– and Rowling writes that Harry had never heard such contempt in his voice. For somebody who so clearly loathed Snape for his rather twisted thought, it seems unlikely that Dumbledore would have been very friendly with him afterward. They developed a mutual respect, that goes without saying. But friends? Seems unlikely.

5 Dumbledore’s Ambiguity When It Came to Snape’s Soul Ripping Apart

When Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him, apparently to save Draco’s soul from being damaged beyond repair, Snape asked him about his own soul– “And my soul, Dumbledore? Mine?” To this, the older man replied that Snape would have to decide whether helping him, i.e. Dumbledore, avoid pain and humiliation would harm his soul.

Like most of their relationship, this instance of conversation too was ambiguous. One could presume that Dumbledore wasn’t particularly keen to worry about Snape’s soul, which he perhaps thought was already damaged enough. In fact, much of the interactions between these two characters seem to be about Dumbledore giving some order, or even sternly reminding Snape of his duties, and Snape agreeing to them in his usual surly manner.

4 Dumbledore Did Not Take Snape In Confidence Until Much Later On

Harry Potter 10 Reasons Why Snape & Dumbledore Arent Real Friends

We know that Snape was quite shocked that Dumbledore might have been bringing Harry up like a pig for slaughter. In the final moments, when Snape is mortally wounded, Harry finds out that the revelation that he would have to die had stunned Snape at the time.

It seems unfair that Dumbledore should not have kept Snape in confidence about Harry’s likely fate. For someone who had endangered his own life to keep Harry safe, to find out that the boy was never meant to survive in the first place and that Dumbledore had possibly known this all along, or at least much longer than him, would naturally have felt like a betrayal.

3 Dumbledore Did Not Seem To Credit Snape With Real Emotions

In one of the most defining moments in the entire series, the potions master is taken aback to learn that Harry must die and Dumbledore wonders if he had, after all, grown to care for the boy. Snape then casts a Patronus that proves his undying love for Lily Potter and it is then that Dumbledore finally seems moved.

What is strange is that Dumbledore is astonished that Snape might have grown to be fond of Harry–that is not very surprising because he did a very good job of hiding it even if he did care. But upon seeing Lily’s Patronus, Dumbledore is shocked again–“After all this time?” It seems that he had not credited Snape with any sincere emotions at all, even though it had been Snape’s love for Lily that had brought him to Dumbledore all those years ago!

2 Severus Snape Was Used As A Pawn

There is no doubt that Snape was used by Dumbledore, he was a pawn in the bigger picture–the inevitable face-off between Voldemort and the boy who lived.

Dumbledore knew of Snape’s great love and his remorse at Lily’s death. The mastermind that he was, he exploited these feelings to ensure the final showdown. When Snape finally realized that he had been used, he would have felt thoroughly betrayed.

1 Neither Snape Nor Dumbledore Was Particularly Friendly By Nature

Both Dumbledore and Snape were incredibly layered characters, both had dark pasts which they repented and both wanted the best for Harry. However, given their complicated, secretive nature, neither of these men had a lot of friends as such.

Theirs was a relationship of respect, understanding, and trust –although there were times when Dumbledore failed to demonstrate either, as mentioned above, possibly so that his greater schemes went off smoothly.
