The Harry Potter films are certainly great, but they are quite poor adaptations of the source novels. As is often the case with book to movie translations, the movies cut out a lot of material inherent to the world-building of the book. That’s primarily because world-building isn’t as important in a film, as movies are more concerned with telling stories than expanding a world and its history.

As such, a lot of great material has been left out of the Harry Potter films, including info regarding Grimmauld Place – the Black family home in London, and the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix for part of the series.

10 Muggles Ignore The Discrepancy

12 Grimmauld Place is located within London’s Borough of Islington. As it’s located within a Muggle neighborhood, it needs to be protected by a charm (more on that later). And because it’s protected by a charm, the Muggles are unaware of its existence. As such, there is no “12 Grimmauld Place” for the Muggles, and they have come to accept that bizarre truth. In the novels, it’s explicitly stated that Muggles accept the “amusing mistake in the numbering that had caused number eleven to sit beside number thirteen.”

9 Even Wizards Can’t See It

In the film, audiences see the Muggle building quite literally split apart as 12 Grimmauld Place comes into focus. However, this doesn’t happen to any witch or wizard – only a select few. The house has been protected by a Fidelius Charm, a very old and powerful spell that renders a specific location invisible and intangible to everyone. The only people who can see and access a location protected by a Fidelius Charm must be told of its location by the Secret Keeper. Speaking of which…

8 Dumbledore Is (Or Was) Its Secret Keeper

A Secret Keeper is the only person who is able to reveal the location of a building protected by a Fidelius Charm. The secret is said to be embedded within their very soul, and while they can willingly tell anyone they like about the secret, it is literally unable to be extracted out of them by means of torture or blackmail. Dumbledore was the original Secret Keeper of 12 Grimmauld Place, but this was passed to the entire Order upon his death, as those who know of the location become the Secret Keepers after the original Secret Keeper passes away.

7 Sirius Became The Reluctant Owner

The movies go into some history regarding the Black family, but certainly not a lot. As such, it would be impossible to know that Sirius was more of a reluctant inheritor than anything else.

The place was owned by his mother Walburga Black, who burned away Sirius on the family tree after his imprisonment in Azkaban. Both Regulus and Orion Black died in 1979, leaving Walburga all alone with Kreacher at 12 Grimmauld Place. When she passed away in 1985, the house moved to her only living descendant – Sirius.

6 Walburga’s Portrait

One of the creepiest aspects of 12 Grimmauld Place is Walburga Black’s portrait. Her portrait is permanently affixed to the wall, owing to a Permanent Sticking Charm, and it depicts an insane Walburga Black in very realistic detail. The portrait screams at regular intervals, especially when loud noises are made or when a mixed-blood wizard enters the house. Walburga was a pureblood supremacist, and as such, holds very powerful feelings regarding mixed-blood wizards in her house.

5 Phineas Nigellus Black

Another famous portrait within 12 Grimmauld Place is that of Phineas Nigellus Black. Phineas lived from 1847 to 1925 and briefly served as Headmaster of Hogwarts. Sirius, his great-great-grandson, described him as the worst Headmaster in Hogwarts’ history. However, his portrait was later taken down by Hermione out of fear that it would tell Snape of their whereabouts and activities. It was taken on their camping trip, and when it discovered their location, it informed Snape – who in turn brought Harry the Sword of Gryffindor.

4 The House Was Vacant And Decrepit

Following Walburga’s death in 1985, 12 Grimmauld Place was left in absolute shambles. The only one living in the house was the elf Kreacher, and he failed in the upkeep.

It sat unoccupied until Sirius Black escaped from prison in 1993. However, he always hated the family’s ancestral home (having previously run away when he was 16), and he gave it over to the Order to be used as headquarters. This required Molly and the Weasley children to clean it up, which involved running out the boggarts and doxies that had taken up residence in the empty home.

3 Security Measures

The movie includes a brief scene in which a Dumbledore made of dust approaches the trio with his hand outstretched. This was one of the security measures put in place at 12 Grimmauld Place. In the movie, the Dumbledore simply disintegrates. In the novel, the person it is moving towards needs to tell it that they did not kill Dumbledore. The house is also equipped with a Tongue Tying Curse, who if Snape were to enter, he would be literally tongue-tied so as to avoid spilling its location to the Death Eaters.

2 Home To Magic Objects

12 Grimmauld Place is also the home of many unique magical objects. Of course, it briefly housed Slytherin’s locket, as Regulus Black had stolen it and attempted to have it destroyed. Other items include a crystal bottle filled with what appears to be blood, a grandfather clock that shoots bolts at people who walk by, tweezers that try to puncture people’s skin, a music box that plays a sinister tune, and ancient robes that attempted to strangle Ron. Sounds like a fun place to stay.

1 Deserted Owing To Snape

It was the plan to keep using 12 Grimmauld Place as a headquarters. However, this plan was kaput when Dumbledore was killed at the hands of Snape. Unfortunately, Snape also knew of the house’s location and thus became a Secret Keeper upon Dumbledore’s death. Being a Secret Keeper, he could willingly tell anyone of its location. As such, the Order abandoned 12 Grimmauld Place out of fear that Snape would tell his fellow Death Eaters. Of course, Snape would never do that. But they didn’t know that at the time!
