Harry Potter: 10 Things Every Movie Has In Common

Though each Harry Potter movie was different in some way, they all had some similar themes within every movie that was a through-line to the series.

The Harry Potter film series spanned over ten years and eight movies: eight films with varying production members, different adventures, new characters, and developing plots. And yet there was always consistency, always depth, and an ability to connect to the audience.

It was a series of eight movies that despite being eight separate movies, had elements that could be found in each one: whether it be characters, themes, or settings.

10 Harry Facing An Obstacle

Without challenges, there is no plot. In every Harry Potter film, there is a looming, threatening force. Sometimes it’s obvious, while other times, it isn’t. Harry faced the challenge of living a normal life during the entire series. He had to get the philosopher’s stone, find the chamber of secrets, face a murderer, survive The Triwizard Tournament, protect Hogwarts from tyranny, understand his nemesis, and find and destroy Horcruxes while the Wizarding World was under siege, and with a bounty on his head. He faced the obstacle of his own belonging, his position as The Chosen One, his responsibility, and his lack of knowledge in things he thought he knew so well.

9 Wisdom

With such wise characters, there is no doubt that every film is steeped in wisdom. The wisdom of friendship, love, grief, trust, hope, death, life, change, and honor. Many a wise quote was written in the books, and many found their way on screen. Wisdom shaped Harry’s journey, the lessons he learned through his experiences and relationships. Dumbledore shared words of wisdom concerning choice, “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Sirius helped Harry with his emotional turmoil, “You’re not a bad person. You’re a very good person, who bad things have happened to, you understand? Besides, the world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters, we’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” In every film, there is something to be learned, a reminder, something to ponder on.

8 A Progressively Darker Theme

Something most fans will notice in the Harry Potter films is the progressively darker theme. It is noticeable in the Warner Brothers’ emblem shown at the beginning of each film, the lighting and tone of the scenes, the content of the films as the threat faced by the protagonists looms ever greater and the characters grow older and increasingly burdened with responsibility and understanding. The films reflect the complexity of the storyline and the turn from the innocent to the learned and heavy soul.

7 The Golden Trio

Harry, Ron, and Hermione are The Golden Trio. They have been in every film together, facing every obstacle together. Ron was the first wizard Harry and the audience ever got to know, the first true friend he ever made who didn’t bully him or was scared of him because of what Dudley might do.

Hermione made a sacrifice for Ron and Harry just as they took a risk in saving her. From the first movie onwards, they were family. Their presence in each film is comforting and necessary, they are, after all, the ones who help defeat Voldemort.

6 Magical Creatures

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is full of magical creatures, and the audience can always find some in each film. Some were incredibly creepy while others were beautiful and majestic, surprising the audience with what they should expect. Whether it be a three-headed dog named Fluffy, Cornish Pixies, Trolls, House-elves, a giant petrifying Basilisk, a Phoenix, Acromantula, Dementors, Hippogriffs, Boggarts, Kneazles, Selkies, Grindylow, Thestrals, Giants, Inferius, Dragons, or Werewolves.

5 Death

The theme of death; how it affects, how it is accepted, how it burdens, uplifts, and compels is always present in Harry Potter. Death itself can also be found in every film whether it is on screen or mentioned. The death of Lily and James, Quirrell, Myrtle, muggles who died because of Peter Pettigrew, Barty Crouch, Cedric Diggory, Sirius Black, Aragog, Dumbledore, Hedwig, Moody, Dobby, Fred, Tonks, Remus, the list goes on. Every death carried with it symbolism for both Harry and the audience.

4 An Incredible Soundtrack

As with any film, music is key. It informs the atmosphere and creates associated themes. The soundtrack of all Harry Potter films link together even though the scores haven’t been composed by the same people, and are astounding in their creation. There are soft beautiful pieces such as “Hedwig’s Theme” and “A Window To The Past,” by John Williams, “Lily’s Theme,” by Alexandre Desplat, “Harry In Winter,” by Patrick Doyle, and “When Ginny Kissed Harry,” and “Dumbledore’s Farewell” by Nicholas Hooper. There are exciting exhilarating scores such as “The Quidditch World Cup,” by Patrick Doyle, and “Buckbeak’s Flight,” by John Williams. Each film provides the audience with an incredible euphonious experience.

3 A Parental Figure

Harry’s parents were murdered by Voldemort which meant he grew up in the care of his aunt Petunia and uncle Vernon. But those awful people were family in name, not nurture. Despite Harry being an orphan, every film has included a figure of great parental influence. Hagrid cared for Harry and always tried his best to keep him safe and welcome. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley treated Harry like one of their own. Dumbledore’s downfall was that he cared too much for Harry.

McGonagall was a stern and protective eye. Sirius was there for Harry even when he couldn’t be and regretted every moment he wasn’t. Snape kept Harry safe because of his love for Lily. Lupin helped Harry overcome his fears and loved him more than he could show. Moody guided Harry and gave his life knowingly. Lily and James appeared due to the spell on Voldemort’s wand and the power of The Resurrection Stone.

2 Love

Love is one of the biggest themes in the Harry Potter series. Harry’s parents acted with love and sacrificed themselves to save him. Voldemort was temporarily defeated because of the protection this created in Harry’s blood. Harry loves Dumbledore and trusts him, the opposite of Tom Riddle, leading to a loyal Harry defeating the diary. Harry’s love for his parents determines his actions. Lily and James protect Harry in the graveyard. Voldemort exploits Harry’s love for Sirius. Voldemort’s disbelief that love is the strongest form of magic. Snape’s love for Lily. Harry’s love and trust that helps him to sacrifice himself in the end. And Narcissa Malfoy’s love for her son.

1 A Sense Of Humor

Even though the films became progressively darker, there was humor in every single one, no matter how small, how fleeting, or how random. The characters were placed in awkward, out there, interesting or relatable situations resulting in hilarious commentary and reactions. A particularly funny moment in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince was Harry’s behavior under the influence of Felix Felicis during his interaction with Slughorn, and Ron’s behavior after he ate Harry’s spiked chocolates. In Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Dobby’s quirks and explanations provided much relief, the Ministry Of Magic poly juice potion transformations gave humor to an otherwise perilous situation, and Ron’s return made for a humorous Harry reaction.
