Harry Potter 10 Things Only Book Fans Know About Minerva McGonagall

Harry Potter had many bad teachers during his time at Hogwarts. Dolores Umbridge, Severus Snape, and Barty Crouch Jr. (posing as Alastor ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody) certainly wouldn’t pass any inspections with flying colors. The same can’t be said for Minerva McGonagall, however. She’s fierce, sure, but also loyal and brilliant at furthering the minds of young wizards and witches alike.

McGonagall was portrayed by British actress Maggie Smith during the eight Potter movies, with the 85-year-old doing a stellar job in the role. Not every piece of book information about the character made it onto the screen, though, so here’s 10 things only fans of the books know about the Transfiguration professor.

10 The Chess Set Was Hers

In the Sorcerer’s Stone movie, Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are forced to go through some pretty difficult tasks to stop Nicolas Flamel’s stone being taken by Lord Voldemort. And one of the trickiest is the giant chess set, which involves the trio actually taking part – and dealing with the consequences.

Ron navigates them through this, though is ruthlessly attacked as he secures victory. It’s later revealed that McGonagall was the one who put the whole thing together and Percy Weasley is overheard bragging about his brother’s triumph as Gryffindor win the House Cup. It’s a proud moment for Ron, especially given how he’d always been overshadowed by his siblings in the years previously.

9 She Comforted The Weasley’s After Ginny’s Death Scare

After Ginny is saved from the Chamber of Secrets in the movie of the same name, fans don’t get to see her again (besides a brief cameo in the Great Hall when Rubeus Hagrid is released from Azkaban). It’s a different story in the source material, however, with the fall-out explained in great detail.

McGonagall comforts both Molly and Arthur Weasley as they fret over their daughter, and she’s present when they’re informed that Lord Voldemort had forced Ginny into opening the Chamber, albeit against her will. This is one of a few instances where McGonagall’s softer side emerges, but she’s also got plenty of fire within her too…

8 She Didn’t Approve Of Sybill Trelawney

Harry Potter 10 Things Only Book Fans Know About Minerva McGonagall

One of the reasons why Potter fans like McGonagall so much is because she’s not afraid to show her feelings on anything. She’s blunt, black and white, and it’s not just students who seem to get her disapproval: that happens with some of the teachers as well.

Minerva doesn’t approve of Sybill Trelawney, and when she learns the Divination teacher has claimed Harry will die as a result of ‘The Grim’, she puts his mind at ease. She ruthlessly claims that none of Trelawney’s predictions had come true in the past and even makes a joke, saying she’d let Harry off his homework if he dies. This raises his spirits drastically at a time where he’s feeling low, particularly with Dementors on the loose.

7 She Was Hard On Neville…

Ah, Neville. He’s a great character, loyal friend, and definitely worthy of being in Gryffindor house. But he doesn’t make things easy for himself, and McGonagall, on multiple occasions, comes down hard on him.

In Sorcerer’s Stone, he’s given detention for being out of bed late having tried to warn Harry and Hermione about Draco Malfoy discovering Hagrid’s dragon (in the movie, this instead happens to Ron). And, in Prisoner of Azkaban, she punishes Neville severely after he leaves the passwords to Gryffindor tower lying around. The Transfiguration teacher bans him from future Hogsmeade visits for the rest of the year, gives him a detention, forbids anyone to give him the password, and also writes to his grandmother. Poor Neville…

6 …But Aimed Her Biggest Fury At Cornelius Fudge

Harry Potter 10 Things Only Book Fans Know About Minerva McGonagall

During Harry’s early years in the magical world, Cornelius Fudge is a nice guy. His persona changes, however, and he goes against Albus Dumbledore’s wishes by allowing the Dementors of Azkaban into Hogwarts to perform their horrible kiss on Barty Crouch Jr. after he’s unmasked as an imposter in the Goblet of Fire.

Crouch Jr. does deserve this given that he’s a Death Eater, but this doesn’t stop McGonagall from being utterly furious. She “screams more than Harry has ever seen her before” and doesn’t let the issue slide. Harry can hear her strong exchange with Fudge from his bed in the Hospital Wing, having narrowly escaped from Voldemort in the graveyard of Little Hangleton.

5 She Nearly Duelled Ministry Of Magic Aurors

Minerva obviously disagreed with Fudge after Voldemort’s return. But, in the huge Order of the Phoenix novel, she actually comes close to duelling both the Minister of Magic and his aurors.

This happens after Albus Dumbledore takes responsibility for the creation of Dumbledore’s Army, despite the illegal organization actually being formed by Harry. Minerva reaches for her wand, but Albus talks her round and instead flees, leaving aurors flustered. This is different in the movie of the same name, with McGonagall not present when the Hogwarts headmaster is forced to go on the run.

4 She Was Attacked By Umbridge In The Dead of Night

In the Order of the Phoenix film, McGonagall and Dolores Umbridge have a couple of confrontations. This, ultimately, results in nothing really happening. But, in the book, the Hogwarts deputy is ruthlessly attacked after coming to the aid of Rubeus Hagrid in the dead of night.

Dolores leads a team of aurors who try and cart Hagrid off to Azkaban, but their attack on the Care of Magical Creatures teacher is interrupted when Minerva comes storming out. She’s then struck in the chest by multiple stunning spells and forced to spend the majority of the rest of the year stuck at St. Mungo’s Hospital. This would have been entertaining to see play out on the big screen but in the end they opted against including it.

3 She Was Spat At By Amycus Carrow

Harry doesn’t go to Ravenclaw Tower in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, with Luna Lovegood instead taking him to Helena Ravenclaw as they look to retrieve Rowena Ravenclaw’s lost diadem. But in the book, the Boy Who Lived does, and he’s present when McGonagall and Death Eater Amycus Carrow square off.

Carrow is furious when he sees his sister, Alecto, unconscious of the floor. And when he reveals his plan to blame the attack on students, McGonagall stands up tall. Amycus then spits square in her face but this triggers Harry, who uses the Cruciatus Curse as revenge. It’s the only time he manages the curse successfully, which speaks volumes about just how angry he was.

2 She Screams When Harry ‘Dies’

When Harry is presumed dead after deciding to face Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest, the sight of Hagrid carrying his lifeless body is difficult to take. And this tips Minerva over the edge, with the Transfiguration teacher letting out a horrendous scream that pierces the air.

Harry is actually alive, of course, but he’s shocked that McGonagall could make such a noise. Fortunately, he re-enters the battle to save his friends.

1 She Duelled Lord Voldemort Herself

Voldemort’s rage peaks in the Deathly Hallows book when he finds out he’s been conned and Harry is actually very much alive. Two thrilling duels take place at once, with the rest of the wizarding world standing around and spectating.

One is Ginny Weasley, Hermione, and Luna vs. Bellatrix Lestrange. And McGonagall is involved in the other, fighting Lord Voldemort herself with some help from Kingsley Shacklebolt and Horace Slughorn. When Bellatrix dies, she’s sent flying backwards as the Dark Lord explodes in a fit of rage. But Harry is there to stop any more damage being done and, when he emerges victorious, Minerva is one of the first people on the scene to congratulate him.
