Remus Lupin is a fan-favorite character from Harry Potter. But though he has a lot of great traits, there are things about him that don’t make sense.

Harry Potter 10 Things That Make No Sense About Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin was the first (and really only) competent Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher that Harry and his fellow Hogwarts students had over their seven years at Hogwarts. He was a complex character, kind, self deprecating, and ill.

Yet, despite all these complexities there were still a few things about the beloved professor that don’t quite add up when examined too closely. Characters, like people, are allowed to change, but there needs to be some sort of consistency over time. Here are a few examples of just how inconsistent Lupin could be.

10 Resigning

At the end of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Snape lets the nature of Lupin’s condition, that he is a werewolf, slip to a few students (on purpose, of course).

Lupin, trying to get ahead of the problem, resigns his teaching post at Hogwarts. While this would have made sense for the Lupin at the beginning of the story, it doesn’t make much sense at the end. He has proven himself an excellent teacher and is liked by the student body as a whole. The fact that he wouldn’t let this part of his reputation speak for itself, or wait until the owls inevitably started arriving to give notice isn’t right.

9 Keeping Secrets

A young Lupin obviously kept secrets. He grew up with a debilitating condition with a stigma attached. The fact that he would keep that a secret and, later, keep the secret of his friends’ animagus forms is perfectly in character.

However, after the loss of Lily and James and, supposedly, Pettigrew, due to secret allegiances and secret-keeping, the older Lupin should have known better than to keep secrets himself. Not admitting Sirius had an animagus form to Dumbledore when Harry was in danger doesn’t make sense.

8 Getting Together With Tonks

Of course, it’s romantic that two Order members would get together during a war and have a child in hopes of a better world for the next generation, but Tonks and Lupin was a bit of an abrupt couple to spring on the audience. Tonks is much younger than Lupin.

Tonks is also everything Lupin is not, loud, outgoing, bumbling. Opposites attract, but the pair aren’t given enough screen time to build up a reason for the attraction. Lupin was always too self-sabotaging and introverted for the relationship to make sense.

7 Abandoning Tonks

If fans were accepting of the Lupin/Tonks relationship it then doesn’t make any sense for Lupin to desert Tonks when she reveals she is pregnant in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Lupin is nothing if not loyal (very Hufflepuff of him).

He kept Sirius and Pettigrew’s secrets even when he thought one was dead and the other a murderer. Lupin certainly never thinks he deserves anything good (Tonks and a child included) but for him to skip town rather than simply be morose but overly protective is out of character.

6 Not Reaching Out to Harry

Perhaps no one but Dumbledore knew where Harry was after he was placed with the Dursleys as a baby (for Harry’s safety of course) but Lupin certainly knew everything after Prisoner of Azkaban.

The fact that he never wrote to Harry between Azkaban and Order is out of character for someone as loyal and judgemental as Lupin. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he didn’t reach out one would think.

5 Not Staying With Sirius

Once Sirius escapes Azkaban and the sucking out of his soul, the idea that he and Lupin wouldn’t spend more time together is mind-boggling.

Sirius travels around even living in caves near Hogsmeade. Why is he not at Lupin’s? Even if it might have been a dilapidated flat? And why isn’t Lupin consistently staying at Grimmauld Place once it’s offered up to the Order? No one really knows.

4 Boggarts in the Classroom

The lesson about boggarts is one of the best scenes in Prisoner of Azkaban, however, the logic behind it seems pretty flawed. When you don’t know a students’ worst fear you really don’t know what you will exposing teenagers to and that’s never wise.

Add to that the fact that Lupin knew Harry was in that class and it shouldn’t have been a surprise when it was finally his turn with the boggart. Lupin’s too smart to have made that kind of mistake.

3 Focus on Dark Creatures

Lupin’s Defense Against the Dark Arts classes largely focused on dark creatures, rather than dark wizards or spells. This is a very odd choice for someone who is himself classified as a dark creature.

Whether or not students, or Lupin himself, saw him that way is beside the point. The real question is why would anyone want to teach students something that might lead to his greatest secret being revealed.

2 Able to Afford Chocolate

Looking at Lupin’s robes, and later after he admits it, it is easy to see that Lupin is far from affluent and finds it hard to find employment.

Without a vault of gold at his disposal, it’s a bit strange that he should always have chocolate on him. Wizards cannot conjure food, so the chocolate certainly would have had to be purchased. How exactly was Lupin able to manage that?

1 Riding the Hogwarts Express

Lupin riding the Hogwarts Express to get to his new job is a great way to introduce the character. It also makes the dementor encounter that much more exciting.

However, it still doesn’t make sense that an adult should be on the train. Perhaps he was too tired from a recent transformation to easily apparate to Hogsmeade, however people come to Hogsmeade all the time. There were obviously other ways that adults got to Hogwarts all the time (see Lucius Malfoy as an example). It was very weird for any adults, other than the trolley witch to be on board.
