Opinion remains firmly divided on the quality of the Harry Potter movies. Some people love the cozier atmospheres of the early Chris Columbus films. Some prefer the darker and more cinematically ambitious later movies. Some believe that the movies rightly cut many things from the novels, while others believe that they should have adapted every scene and line.
And while the movies themselves are good, their quality as adaptations remains in question. Many fans believe that they were poorly adapted from Rowling’s books, but there are certain elements that made a flawless transition from the page to the screen.
10 The Casting
The Harry Potter franchise contains some of the most perfectly cast characters in movie history. If (or when) the Harry Potter movies are ever rebooted, it’ll be very hard to recapture the casting magic of this series. This deleted Reddit user writes, “They nailed the casting on pretty much all fronts.”
And it’s true. The casting for the first movie was conducted by four different people, which could showcase the immense undertaking that it actually was. Luckily, they nailed absolutely everyone – especially the teachers, who were expertly played by some of the biggest names in British film.
9 The Atmosphere
Even the biggest detractors of Harry Potter will agree that they nailed the general tone and atmosphere of the books. The deleted Reddit user again writes, “And the most important thing is they made the world feel REAL. Hogwarts really existed in those movies.”
While fans never got to see some Hogwarts locations, the castle was perfectly adapted from the novels, expertly blending real-world locations and wonderfully detailed sets. Hogwarts is monumentally important to the identity of Harry Potter, and the filmmakers nailed it.
8 The Locations
The filmmakers had an immensely difficult job on their hands in bringing a magical world to life. One can imagine the production designer reading the description of Diagon Alley and thinking, “How in the heck am I going to do that?” But, once again, they nailed it.
Reddit user CosmicAstroBastard writes, “I think it’s hard to understate just how great a job they both did at setting up that world onscreen, especially for people unfamiliar with the books. The art direction and music totally sell everything we see as incredible yet believable.”
7 The Balance In Storytelling
CosmicAstroBastard also writes, “The balance between backstory, info about the present, and foreshadowing about the future is perfect.” It’s very hard for screenwriters to adapt stories from novels – especially novels that are long and require a lot of cutting (like the later Harry Potter books!).
But the screenwriters of the movie franchise, Steve Kloves and Michael Goldenberg, did an exceptional job in crafting a coherent story. Non-book readers are still able to grasp the general story without the added lore that was axed from the finished product.
6 The Pacing
Pacing is an integral and often overlooked aspect of filmmaking. Redditor tylerannei writes, “Best film adaption = [Chamber of Secrets], because the pacing was amazing (something other films had major issues with).”
Of course, it was significantly easier to adapt Chamber of Secrets for the screen because of its relatively short length. It could be as close to possible as a direct 1:1 adaptation, and the result was an expertly paced film that wonderfully mixed character and world-building, plot, and humane moments.
5 Quidditch
While there are definitely some confusing things about Quidditch, the sport has transcended Harry Potter and become one of the most popular fictional sports in the history of literature/film.
Reddit user thevictoriousone believes they adapted it well from the novels, writing, “It’s just so colorful and exciting and I remember being so amazed when I saw Quidditch for the first time. It’s just more exciting to watch a sport than read about it, generally.” While the visuals look a little dated today, it remains a thrilling bit of cinematic magic. No pun intended.
4 The Tale Of The Three Brothers
Filmmakers always run a risk when it comes to adapting monologues. Hermione Granger explains the Deathly Hallows, and while the story is interesting, it’s mainly used for exposition. Director David Yates had a decision to make – simply film Emma Watson talking, or do something creative while she talks.
He went with the latter, and it worked beautifully. As Redditor Illuminatus42 writes, “In the books it’s just a short retelling of the story and the movie could have done just that as well, but they took really advantage of the fact that it’s a movie and created an extraordinarily beautiful scene.”
3 Holiday Ambiance
For many, the Harry Potter films are great non-Christmas movies that are still festive. The books contain a few mentions of the holidays, whether it be Halloween or Christmas, and the atmosphere of these holidays were perfectly adapted from the novels.

2 Harry & Hermione’s Friendship
The friendship shared between Harry and Hermione is one of the most integral aspects of the books. And it was adapted perfectly. Reddit user Woodywoo00 writes, “They did the Hermione and Harry friendship amazing.”
It’s a very complex and interesting friendship. They remain platonic friends throughout the series, with each favoring strong aspects – like loyalty, bravery, and intelligence – within the other. It was refreshing to see a young adult story circumvent the cliché “will they won’t they” drama within its two leads (even though it still appeared through other characters).
1 The Trap Door Obstacles
The Philosopher’s Stone (or The Sorcerer’s Stone) contains a thrilling climax with the trap door obstacles. Reddit user elephant35e thinks these were nicely adapted for the movie, writing, “The obstacles under the forbidden corridor that were shown in the movie.”
Everything but the giant troll and the potions puzzle were there, and they were all filmed with the help of some extraordinary visual effects. The movies expertly brought the Devil’s Snare, the chess set, and the flying keys to thrilling life, ending the first film in spectacular fashion.
