Hermione Granger was a great character in Harry Potter but these 10 things still have us scratching our heads.

Hermione Granger is not only one of the greatest characters in Harry Potter, but she’s also one of the best characters throughout the history of fiction. JK Rowling has done a tremendous job creating a character who is complex, generous, brilliant, and emotionally intelligent. Hermione is so many things, and we will always consider her character to be a role model who has shaped our childhood.

With that being said, there are some things about Hermione Granger that don’t make a lot of sense to us. Here are 10 things that we don’t understand about the brightest witch of her age.

10 WHY DIDN’T HERMIONE’S DENTIST PARENTS FIX HER TEETH?

This one still has us scratching our heads with confusion. Hermione is a brilliant character who prefers logic over everything else, so why didn’t she have her parents fix her buck-teeth in the books considering their profession revolves around fixing teeth?

Why did she use magic to shrink them in Goblet of Fire? It just doesn’t make much sense to us. This seems a bit insulting to her parents.

9 WHY DID HERMIONE CHOOSE RON?

This is a more controversial question considering there are tons of Potter fans who believe Ron and Hermione are destined to be with one another. Although love is love, and you can’t choose who you fall for, we still think Hermione could have done better than Ron. Ron would undermine Hermione throughout the entire series, and she was no angel to him either.

Sure, there was tension between them, but chemistry does not equate to a solid marriage with someone. One would think Hermione would choose someone who she was more compatible with, someone who would lift her up rather than tear her down.

8 WHAT THE HECK WAS UP WITH THAT TROLL INCIDENT?

One of the most confusing moments throughout the Potter series was in The Sorcerer’s Stone when Hermione lied to McGonagall about the troll incident in the bathroom. After Ron and Harry went to the bathroom to try and save her, Hermione lied to the professor by telling her she tried to defeat the troll herself and Ron/Harry had nothing to do with it.

Why would she get herself in trouble like that when she could’ve just been honest? All she did was go to the bathroom and the troll was there. Ron and Harry did the noble thing by trying to help her, so there was really no harm done and they wouldn’t have been docked points from Gryffindor. It makes no sense.

7 WHY DOES SHE DO HARRY AND RON’S HOMEWORK ALL THE TIME?

Hermione is a bit of a show-off when it comes to her intellect, so it makes sense that she’d use any opportunity she could to shed light on her brains. But shouldn’t she be smart enough to know that it won’t do Ron or Harry any good if she does their homework for them?

We will give Harry a pass here because he’s kind of too busy trying to defeat Voldemort to focus on his potions homework, but what about Ron? He’s got nothing better to do. She shouldn’t be bending over backward for them all the time. They need to learn the material or else they’ll never pass.

6 WHY DOESN’T SHE HAVE MORE FEMALE FRIENDS?

Throughout the series, we barely see Hermione engage with her female classmates. She sticks around with Harry and Ron, which is fine, but it would have been nice to see her befriend some women throughout her entire time at Hogwarts.

It seems odd that throughout her seven years there she rarely made any serious friendships with anyone other than Harry and Ron, especially with other female characters.

5 WHY DOES SHE OBLIVIATE MR. AND MRS. GRANGER?

This just doesn’t make much sense. We get that Hermione wanted to pull an Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind where she erased her parents’ memories so they wouldn’t have to be pained if Hermione died in the wizarding war, but the fact that she also erased their identities and replaced them with new ones seems a bit rash.

What about the rest of their friends and loved ones? What about their careers? How will they deal with the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Granger have been obliviated?

4 WHY DIDN’T SHE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME TURNER?

Hermione was given a time turner in her third year during Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. She was instructed to only use it so she could manage to tackle multiple classes at once, yet she decided to bend the rules by using it to save Buckbeak.

That’s a sweet gesture, but why couldn’t she have taken advantage of the time turner by using it to stop more horrible events from occurring? For instance, she could have tampered with Voldemort’s reign, thus saving millions of lives rather than just the hippogriff’s.

3 WHY DO THEY MAKE HER LOOK LIKE SUCH A BOMBSHELL IN THE LATER FILMS?

We know Hollywood is guilty of adaptational attractiveness where they have an ugly or average looking fictional character and they have them portrayed by a conventionally beautiful actor/actress. Emma Watson’s portrayal of Hermione Granger is one of the most obvious examples of this because Watson is conventionally stunning while Hermione is described to be average and nothing special to look at.

So why did they glam Watson up to make her look even more beautiful as the movies progressed? Instead of Hermione having bushy brown hair, she instead had blonde beach curls in the later films. Not exactly the Hermione we were picturing in the books. Still, Watson did a fantastic job portraying her and we couldn’t imagine anyone else for the role.

2 WHY WASN’T HERMIONE PLACED IN RAVENCLAW?

This is one of the most confusing aspects of the books/films. Why wasn’t Hermione placed in Ravenclaw as opposed to Gryffindor? She seems so much better fit for Rowena’s house. Ravenclaw leads by intellect, wisdom, and logic. This describes Hermione in a nutshell.

She isn’t conventionally brave like most Gryffindors are, so why is she in this house? Perhaps it’s just more convenient for the plot to have her in the same house as Ron and Harry.

1 WHY DIDN’T HERMIONE STAND UP FOR MUGGLES?

Wizards have a serious superiority complex when it comes to their powers, and they often love to put down muggles.

Ron and Harry do it quite often, but why doesn’t Hermione stand up for non-magical people? After all, her parents are muggles. It doesn’t make sense.
