The Harry Potter series is all about magic, Hogwarts, and defeating Voldemort. But there were many romantic couples, some more loving than others.

While Harry Potter might not be a story focused on romance, there are many romantic relationships in the series. In addition to the adult couples in Harry’s life, there are infatuations and steady romances among his peers as well. However, some of the couples definitely work better than others. There are certain pairings that made complete sense together as well as some that were have been awful.

Here are the five couples from Harry Potter that are perfect together and five that make no sense.

10 PERFECT: BILL WEASLEY AND FLEUR DELACOUR

Bill and Fleur are both side characters, so we don’t get to learn a lot about them. However, what we do see points to them being a great couple. While it’s assumed at first that Fleur is shallow, after Bill is attacked by Greyback, it’s clear they both have a deep love for each other that goes beyond the superficial.

They are both cool, ambitious, and talented people, making them rather evenly matched. Their wedding is also one of the highlights of romantic moments in the books.

9 MAKE NO SENSE: RUBEUS HAGRID AND OLYMPE MAXIME

These two aren’t necessarily an awful couple or even bad together at first, but it’s clear that they wouldn’t really last long-term. They aren’t a good enough match to really make sense, and this is likely why their relationship is pretty short-lived in canon. While they can relate on some things such as being half-giant, they are very different people. Hagrid, who is one of the least fancy people around, loves dangerous creatures and being in nature, while Maxime is a very elegant person who wouldn’t be happy living in a place like Hagrid’s hut.

8 PERFECT: HARRY POTTER AND GINNY WEASLEY

Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley are a couple that actually make a lot of sense. They both have strong and passionate personalities, and they could definitely challenge and support each other. Ginny is someone who provides stability to Harry but is also strong enough to deal with his more emotional sides.

At the same time, Harry is engaging and intelligent enough to keep Ginny interested. And, the fact that this couple allows Harry to become part of the Weasley family is super sweet.

7 MAKE NO SENSE: REMUS LUPIN AND NYMPHADORA TONKS

While there are some people who like this couple, there are many others who aren’t fans. This relationship doesn’t really seem like a healthy one. First of all, it causes a lot of stress for Tonks and makes her temporarily lose her ability to change her appearance. Then there’s the fact that Lupin tries to leave Tonks when she’s pregnant because he can’t handle the guilt. Overall, these two seemed like they made each other miserable more than they made each other happy. Their personalities don’t seem to go well together, and they seem overall to have different ways of going about the world.

6 PERFECT: JAMES AND LILY POTTER

While we don’t actually get to hear a lot about James and Lily’s relationship in the Harry Potter series, what is included in the books points to them being a good match. They are both extremely dedicated and passionate towards the cause of fighting Voldemort, and they have complementary personalities. James can be a bit intense and Lily also has a strong personality. They are both extremely talented at magic and are very smart. These two would definitely had a lot of fun together while also being committed and loyal.

5 MAKE NO SENSE: RON WEASLEY AND HERMIONE GRANGER

While Ron and Hermione may be one of the main couples of the series, they don’t really make a lot of sense long-term. We can understand their relationship while they’re teenagers, but it wouldn’t be a very mature or healthy coupling in the long run. For one thing, even as friends, they didn’t get along all that well.

They would often bicker or even get into downright nasty fights. Hermione is someone who has quite the activist’s soul, and Ron can be a bit too apathetic. Overall, they just seem like they would drive each other mad.

4 PERFECT: VERNON AND PETUNIA DURSLEY

Now, obviously Vernon and Petunia aren’t a very likable couple, and they are pretty awful as people. However, they are actually good together in the fact that they are evenly matched. They are both extremely boring, judgmental, and mean people. They both hate magic, and they want to live the most acceptable, mundane lives. While they might make the lives of the people around them rather miserable, they’re both so terrible that they make each other very happy.

3 MAKE NO SENSE: DRACO MALFOY AND PANSY PARKINSON

This is another couple that doesn’t make a lot of sense, so it was a relief that they didn’t actually end up together in the long-term. While they may have had a short-lived teenage romance, they would never be good together. Draco is someone with a lot of issues, and someone like Pansy who just worships the ground he walks on wouldn’t be a good match for him, nor would the relationship be healthy for her. There definitely didn’t seem to be any real affection between them either.

2 PERFECT: ARTHUR AND MOLLY WEASLEY

Of all the adult couples in the series, Arthur and Molly’s relationship is one of the most endearing. These two have been by each other’s side for decades and built a large family together. It’s clear that they love each other very much and that they support one other. Their commitment to their marriage and their family makes them a perfect match.

1 MAKE NO SENSE: DUMBLEDORE AND GRINDELWALD

Dumbledore and Grindelwald are one of the most unfortunate couples in all of Harry Potter. It’s a shame that the only confirmed LGBT couple from the series is so unhealthy and that one half of that relationship is a dark wizard. While their pairing may have made sense as it started, the fact that Dumbledore was so willing to go along with many of Grindelwald’s horrible beliefs is truly concerning.
