Harry Potter 5 Hufflepuffs Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

In the Harry Potter series, characters are sorted into one of four houses. By far the most unappreciated Hogwarts house is Hufflepuff. This house values hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play. It is also the most inclusive house as the founder, Helga Hufflepuff felt that there should be a space for all magical individuals at Hogwarts. This reputation for accepting all has sometimes contributed to the undermining of the Hufflepuff house, as some believe this house to be a place for miscellaneous folks who lack specific talent. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Part of the blame for the under-appreciation of Hufflepuff falls on author J.K. Rowling. Though she has stated in interviews that Hufflepuff is her favorite house, the books contain less developed Hufflepuff characters than those from other houses. Take a look at the five Hufflepuffs who got fitting endings and the five who deserved more.

10 Fitting Ending: Zacharias Smith

Harry Potter 5 Hufflepuffs Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Zacharias is not your typical Hufflepuff. His selfishness and cowardliness make it hard to believe he was sorted into this house in the first place. Though he was well-known for being a Hufflepuff Chaser and for participating in Dumbledore’s Army, his loyalty soon wavered.

During the Battle of Hogwarts, Zacharias turned his back on Dumbledore’s Army, deciding he’d rather save himself. This is especially shocking behavior for a Hufflepuff as an overwhelming majority of the house stayed to fight. It’s unclear what happened to Zacharias after the battle, but anyone willing to push first-years out of the way in an attempt to flee the scene is not worth a follow-up.

9 Deserved More: Ernest Macmillan

This Hufflepuff student also defied expectations. Ernest “Ernie” Macmillan was one of the “Sacred Twenty-Eight”, a group of pure-blood families. He was extremely academically gifted and had many friends in his house, but his relationship with Harry had many ups and downs. This is evidenced through Ernie’s original belief that Harry was the Heir of Slytherin and his bullying of Harry after his name was drawn from the Goblet of Fire.

Ernie atoned for his bad actions by apologizing to Harry and being one of the first to believe him about Voldemort’s return. Ernie then joined Dumbledore’s Army and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. Nothing is known about what happened to him after. This seems wrong as Ernie was one of the most developed Hufflepuffs in the series.

8 Fitting Ending: Helga Hufflepuff

Helga Hufflepuff was one of the four original founders of Hufflepuff. Unlike the other founders who competed for particularly gifted students, Helga looked for students with strong morals. She believed in treating everyone equally and even created the house-elf contingent, providing house-elves, who were often abused, with a safe working environment on Hogwarts grounds. Helga’s contributions to the wizarding community had a profoundly positive impact and her legacy continues to live on.

7 Deserved More: Susan Bones

Another well-developed and beloved Hufflepuff who didn’t receive a satisfying ending was Susan Bones. Susan was a half-blood with a tragic backstory in that her entire family had been slaughtered by Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Instead of this ensuing fear in Susan, it fueled her. She joined Dumbledore’s Army and was determined to put an end to the senseless murders and evil reign of Voldemort.

While it is known that Susan fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, no other information is provided. Fans would have loved to see this character be rewarded, avenging the deaths of her family members while going on to do great things. Instead they got nothing.

6 Fitting Ending: Grogan Stump

This wizard served as the Minster for Magic for eight years. During his time as Minister, he created several new departments in the Ministry. These departments held all beings to the same standards while giving them appropriate representation. His changes ended ongoing debates within the magical world and unified many. Stump was well-liked and left a wonderful legacy, giving him the credit and ending he deserved.

5 Deserved More: Cedric Diggory

Harry Potter 5 Hufflepuffs Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Cedric was an extremely popular Hufflepuff and Seeker. A well-respected competitive individual, he entered his name into the Goblet of Fire and was selected to play in the Triwizard Tournament. Tragedy befell Cedric when he was killed by Peter Pettigrew. Many fans were devastated by this death, as were the characters in Harry Potter, leaving Cedric with a legacy befitting his character.

That is, until Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was released. In this play, Cedric’s death is used to manipulate characters into going back in time to try to save him. While time traveling, our protagonists accidentally alter the events of Harry Potter. In one plotline, Cedric even becomes a Death Eater! This is a huge insult to Cedric’s character. They should have just left well enough alone.

4 Fitting Ending: Hannah Abbott

Harry Potter 5 Hufflepuffs Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Hannah was a prefect and a member of Dumbledore’s Army. The death of her mother at the hands of Death Eaters pushed her to fight against Voldemort, and she bravely fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. After, Hannah went on to marry Neville Longbottom.

Her career prospects first had her running the Leaky Cauldron before training as a healer and becoming a Hogwarts nurse. This ending was perfect for Hannah as it showed her heart, passion, and work ethic.

3 Deserved More: Pomona Sprout

Harry Potter 5 Hufflepuffs Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

During Harry’s time at Hogwarts, Pomona Sprout served as the Head of Hufflepuff and the Herbology department. An extremely gifted witch, she grew helpful healing plants such as Mandrakes, which were used to cure students. Pomona was brave and strong-willed, protecting students from the Carrows and standing up to both Umbridge and Snape, causing many others to follow her lead.

Sprout’s leadership skills also contributed to success during the Battle at Hogwarts as she lead students into battle and used her plants to fight against Death Eaters. Even this popular character doesn’t get a well-developed ending. While it is known that she continued to work at Hogwarts, no other details are provided.

2 Fitting Ending: Justin Finch-Fletchley

Harry Potter 5 Hufflepuffs Who Got Fitting Endings (& 5 Who Deserved More)

Justin is a Muggle-born wizard who was thrust into the wizarding world after receiving his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. While he originally believed the rumors about Harry being the heir of Slytherin, Justin later realized this was wrong of him and went on to join Dumbledore’s Army.

As a Muggle-born student, Justin wasn’t allowed to attend Hogwarts during what would have been his final year. Luckily, he was able to finish his education after Voldemort’s defeat. He went on to become a Professor of Muggle Studies and served as Head of Hufflepuff house. Justin was also a proud father to his son, Ignatius.

1 Deserved More: Nymphadora Tonks

Tonks was one of the most beloved Hufflepuffs. She was ambitious and highly skilled, holding many powerful positions. She served as an Auror for the Ministry of Magic and joined the Order of the Phoenix to fight against Voldemort.

She used her position in the Ministry to serve as a spy and protect the Department of Mysteries. Tonks fought in both the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and the Battle of Hogwarts. Her death at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange was devastating. Both she and her husband Lupin were murdered during the final battle, leaving their son Teddy an orphan and fans crushed and heartbroken.
