In Harry Potter’s Wizarding World, great achievements are acknowledged through the appropriately named Order of Merlin. The award is the equivalent of the Order of the British Empire, and its First Class category practically amounts to a knighthood.

Considering how special it is, one would think that only the bravest and most qualified witches and wizards would receive it. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. For the most part, the Order of Merlin does go to people who deserve it but others wriggle their way into acquiring the coveted title or, occasionally, receive it by mistake.

10 GREAT: Newt Scamander Receives The Award For His Contributions To Magizoology

The main character of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, Newt Scamander may not be all that appreciated throughout his own movies, but that definitely changes in time. His contributions in the field of Magizoology originally land him in trouble, but he is ultimately recognized for his merits. He is first commissioned to write Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 1918, but he continues to work on new editions of the title all throughout his life.

It will later become a textbook at Hogwarts, and by the time Harry Potter joins the famous school of wizardry, there are over fifty editions of it. Newt is also influential in other ways, having created the Werewolf Register and the Ban on Experimental Breeding. His contributions are honored with an Order of Merlin, Second Class, and he also has a Chocolate Card named after him.

9 GREAT: Damocles Belby Invents The Wolfsbane Potion

Werewolves are in general looked down upon in Harry Potter, often considered merely beasts by people like Dolores Umbridge. But as hard as it may be to believe, their original situation was actually worse. It is only after Damocles Belby invents the Wolfsbane Potion that they are granted some degree of acceptance.

The potion gives the afflicted witch or wizard the ability to retain their human intelligence during their transformation. Presumably, this achievement earned Belby an Order of Merlin.

8 TERRIBLE: Peter Pettigrew Is Granted The Award After He Stages His Death

James Potter’s Hogwarts friend and one of the Marauders, Peter Pettigrew becomes the Secret Keeper for the Potters’ Fidelius Charm. Unbeknownst to James and Lily, he is actually a Death Eater spy and he betrays them to Voldemort. After they are killed, he is hunted down by Sirius Black but cunningly blames Sirius for the attack on the Potters and stages his death.

He goes on to live in his rat animagus form with the Weasley family. He is granted an Order of Merlin, First Class, presumably for his confrontation against Sirius. The award is given to his mother, and it is unknown if it is withdrawn after the events of the Second Wizarding War.

7 GREAT: Remus Lupin Posthumously Receives The Award For His Stand Against Voldemort

Peter isn’t the only person who receives a posthumous award, though in some cases, it is legitimate. Remus Lupin joins the Harry Potter series in Harry’s third year. His stint as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher doesn’t last, but he becomes involved in the fight against Voldemort.

He is eventually killed in the Battle of Hogwarts alongside his wife, Nymphadora. His case is particularly notable because he is the only werewolf to have ever received an Order of Merlin.

6 GREAT: Minerva McGonagall Receives The Award For Her Unfaltering Support Of Hogwarts And The Order Of The Phoenix

Unsurprisingly, other Order of the Phoenix members are honored for their contributions in the war against Voldemort. The Deputy Headmistress and Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts, Minerva McGonagall stands out in the series as a stern but fair figure, her protectiveness only rivaled by her sense of justice. On one notable occasion, she takes three Stunners to the chest while attempting to protect Hagrid from Umbridge’s persecution.

During the Battle of Hogwarts, she takes the lead of the school’s defenses. She directs a group of enchanted desks into battle and even duels Voldemort alongside Horace Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt. For her bravery and leadership, she is granted an Order of Merlin, First Class, and immortalized on a Chocolate Card.

5 TERRIBLE: Gilderoy Lockhart Is Honored For His Numerous But Faked Creature Encounters

Harry Potter’s Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in his third year, Gilderoy Lockhart is originally a celebrity and a popular author. Having mastered Memory Charms, he travels the world in search of interesting witches and wizards, convinces them to share their stories, then Obliviates them of their memories. Finally, he claims their achievements as his own. It is in this way that he earns an Order of Merlin, Third Class.

He is also proud of being an Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defence League and a five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award. But his fraudulent way of life literally blows up in his face when he attempts to Obliviate Harry Potter and Ron Weasley with Ron’s broken wand. The spell backfires and he receives permanent spell damage in the form of pronounced amnesia.

4 GREAT: Albus Dumbledore Receives The Award For Defeating Gellert Grindelwald

Harry Potter 7 Great Order Of Merlin Recipients (and 3 That Are Terrible)

One of the most notable recipients of an Order of Merlin is without a doubt Albus Dumbledore. In his case, he receives it not for his efforts in the conflict with Voldemort, but rather, for his defeat of Grindelwald in their duel in 1945. The award is almost revoked when Dumbledore comes into conflict with the corrupt Ministry of Magic, but the truth about Voldemort’s return removes that possibility.

3 GREAT: Severus Snape’s Work As A Double Agent May Have Been Acknowledged With An Order Of Merlin

Harry Potter 7 Great Order Of Merlin Recipients (and 3 That Are Terrible)

Some characters in the movie don’t overtly receive an Order of Merlin, though their merits are acknowledged in other ways. One such example is Severus Snape. The Potions Master acts as a double agent and a spy in Voldemort’s ranks, providing the Order of the Phoenix with information.

It’s a very difficult life for him and one that takes a huge emotional toll. Even so, his skill in Occlumency is so great, Voldemort never discovers his true allegiance. He kills Severus after he wrongfully deems him the master of the Elder Wand. Snape dies in Harry’s arms, providing the young wizard with the final pieces of the puzzle he needs to defeat Voldemort. Harry later acknowledges Severus as the bravest man he ever knew, but he definitely would have deserved an Order of Merlin.

2 TERRIBLE: Cornelius Fudge Gives Himself The Award For His Work In The Ministry

Harry Potter 7 Great Order Of Merlin Recipients (and 3 That Are Terrible)

Dark wizards like Voldemort aren’t the only ones who abuse their power. During his tenure as the Minister of Magic, Cornelius awards himself the Order of Merlin, presumably in acknowledgment of his distinguished career. Many of his constituents aren’t happy, feeling his actions affect the worth of the award. They’re certainly not wrong in this respect.

Throughout his work as a Minister, Cornelius is anything but efficient, bowing down to prejudice and turning a blind eye to the actions of escaped Death Eaters. He even initiates a campaign to smear Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore, arguing against Voldemort’s return. This will ultimately prove disastrous for his career, and his self-granted award doesn’t save him from losing his position.

1 GREAT: The Golden Trio Must Have Received The Honor For Their Fight Against Voldemort

If there’s anyone who deserves an award for their contributions during the war with Voldemort, it is without a doubt the members of the Golden Trio. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley risk their lives on numerous occasions to ensure the defeat of the dark wizard. From a very young age, they are forced to confront peril older wizards shy away from.

They don’t always make the best choices, but, in the end, they are the ones who track down and destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes. Harry even walks to his death to make sure Voldemort will not rise again. They would have definitely earned the award and the admiration of the entire Wizarding World.
