Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Astrology may not be for everyone. Some people are like Hermione, looking down on Divination as logically-unfounded nonsense. Some are like Luna Lovegood, open-minded, and willing to see the magic in the universe.

Regardless of where you stand, from a writing standpoint, it is clear that JK Rowling was influenced by the Western Zodiac in some way when penning the Harry Potter series. With so many of the characters given official birthdays, we can see how their personalities were molded around their respective Sun Signs.

Updated on January 17th, 2021 by Amanda Bruce: In the world of Harry Potter, fans are used to classifying the characters based on their Hogwarts house traits, but there are more ways to analyze the personality traits of a character. Zodiac signs make for a particularly fascinating one. The majority of the main characters have their birth dates revealed in the novels themselves, but some were revealed on JK Rowling’s own official site, proving that put a lot of thought into just when each character was born and what it might say about them.

12 Fred & George Weasley – Aries

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Sure, the Weasley twins may fall under Aries only because they were born on April Fool’s Day (the most appropriate day of the year for the prankster duo); but Aries are full of confidence and ambition. They know what they want, and they’re going to do whatever they can to get it. Aries are self-assured, passionate, impulsive and in some cases business savvy.

There was never a moment that the Weasley twins doubted themselves or let others deter them from their goals. Also, there is the irony that Aries is opposite to Libra, the sign of partnership and balance.

11 Horace Slughorn & Pomona Sprout – Taurus

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Taurans live by the motto, “work hard, play hard.” They have a taste for the finer things and like to indulge in their pleasures – food, coffee, alcohol, sex – but only when it’s earned. Horace Slughorn loved surrounding himself with successful people and throwing lavish dinner parties for his esteemed friends.

Pomona Sprout was also a Taurus, demonstrating the other side of the zodiac sign’s coin, valuing hard work and encouraging her students when they showed promise. She was a firm yet maternal figure, with an affinity for gardening.

10 Draco Malfoy – Gemini

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Gemini, The Twins, are multifaceted chameleons who assess social situations and choose their appropriate masks. Some may be quick to label Geminis as two-faced and fake, but at their heart, Geminis just want to belong – preferably to a group they deem as cool or of respectable standing.

Draco knows how to play the social game. He picks the people and causes he wishes to align himself with and does his best to play the part, even if it goes against Draco’s conscience. Geminis can also feel conflicted between their head and heart, and by the end of the series, the audience could see Draco was torn between following Voldemort or doing what was right.

9 Dudley Dursley & Dobby – Cancer

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Cancers are homebodies who love spending time with family and friends. Dobby deeply cherished his friendship with Harry Potter, always going above and beyond to help and show his love.

On the flip side, Cancers can be moody or “crabby”, something we definitely see in Dudley Dursley. He loved his home comforts and being around his Petunia and Vernon Dursley, who always pampered him. Dudley was also prone to nagging and sulking when he didn’t get his way.

8 Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom – Leo

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Leos are natural-born leaders, divas, and heroes. Which makes perfect sense for Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, and Neville Longbottom.

Leos naturally attract attention and tend to become quite popular within their social circles. They’re also loyal, brave, protective – but they can also be also arrogant, prideful and attention-seeking. Both Harry and Ginny were popular students in Gryffindor house, earning a lot of attention (even when it wasn’t always wanted). Furthermore, Neville grew up to become perhaps one of the bravest heroes in the series.

7 Hermione Granger & Dolores Umbridge – Virgo

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Virgos are meticulous and logic-driven. They strive for perfection, holding everyone to high standards, and even higher standards for themselves. When they can’t reach these heights, they’re prone to anxiety and stress. Hermione’s studious nature is the perfect example of these Virgo qualities, as is her Bogart: failing her exams, or not being good enough.

Alternatively, Virgos can have a set view of how the world should be. They want the world to meet their values and ideals; in their eyes that is perfection. Dolores Umbridge is the dark side of Virgo, showcasing prejudice and the need for total control.

6 Minerva McGonagall – Libra

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Even though Libras have a reputation for being indecisive, romantic social butterflies, they are also fair-minded people who seek peace and justice. Minerva McGonagall was always hard yet fair in how she dealt with students. She was never opposed to docking house points from Gryffindor when it was warranted (unlike Snape).

As Libras tend to avoid direct confrontation and can lean towards passive-aggressive, it makes sense she rewarded Harry for being rude to Umbride by offering him a biscuit.

5 Sirius Black & Molly Weasley – Scorpio

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Scorpio is a sign that has a bad reputation. They can be secretive, moody, dark, and dangerous – all of which are qualities that apply to Sirius Black. When Sirius escaped from Azkaban he was driven by a need for vengeance against Peter Pettigrew. But he was also deeply loving and caring, offering Harry to come and live with him instead of the Dursleys. Plus, he was a total charmer who oozed sex appeal.

Another Scorpio is Molly Weasley, who was also full of love and a desire to protect her family. Anyone who crossed her, or her loved ones, was met with her coldness or her wrath – like Hermione in Goblet of Fire, or Bellatrix during the Battle for Hogwarts.

4 Rubeus Hagrid & Bill Weasley – Sagittarius

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Sagittarians have an adventurous spirit and philosophical soul. Both the two Weasley Sagittarians – Bill and Charlie – were independent enough to work abroad (Egypt and Romania respectively) with a fondness for broadening their minds. Bill was described as an academic overachiever at school, whereas Charlie was more the outdoors type. Bill fell in love with Fleur Delacour, and Charlie fell in love with dragons.

The other Sagittarius of the series, Rubeus Hagrid, also had a fondness for dragons as well as all exotic creatures. He loved to learn and teach, wanting to change everyone’s perceptions of “dangerous beasts.”

3 Lord Voldemort & Severus Snape – Capricorn

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Unless there is something in their chart to offset this influence, Capricorns are ambitious and cunning folk who will stop at nothing and no-one to achieve their goals. Severus Snape and Tom Riddle are headstrong traditionalists, prone to moodiness and pessimism.

The dark side of Capricorn will see them sacrificing anyone, even those on their side if it means a win in the long-run. Capricorns are absolutists with commitment, whether it be a cause, goal, or person.

2 Luna Lovegood & Arthur Weasley – Aquarius

Harry Potter Characters As Zodiac Signs

Aquarians are the eccentric dreamers. Luna Lovegood is the perfect poster-child for Aquarius. She is unconventional and whimsical, but she’s also someone who can lack focus or become fixed with her ideas. She vehemently insisted on the existence of bizarre creatures and conspiracies, even when she was faced with credible evidence that said otherwise.

Arthur Weasley, another Aquarius, was shown to have a quirky fascination with Muggle artifacts. He was enthusiastic and tried to rise above prejudices placed against him and his family. Both Arthur and Luna had a humanitarian-like quality, always wanting to treat others – regardless of status or species – as equals.

1 Ron Weasley & Remus Lupin – Pisces

Pisces is the final sign in the zodiac, and as a result, they can take on the qualities of all the signs. Pisces are total empaths, ruled by their emotions, and gifted with psychic-like intuition. Ron Weasley may have had his bad moments – often letting his emotions override his judgment – but he was also undeniably generous, sociable, and often made foreshadowing comments throughout the series. He even once made the off-hand comment Nagini seemed almost humanlike.

The second Pisces is Remus Lupin, a man shrouded in mystery. Lupin has a huge heart but is also prone to melancholy and martyrdom, both of which are the dark side of Pisces. He does have the Pisces creative streak, finding innovative ways to teach Hogwarts students how to defend themselves.
