Harry Potter Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Movie Franchise

Over eight movies, and ten years, fans watched Harry Potter and his friends go from adorable child-wizards to incredible magical warriors, ready to take down the Darkest Wizard of all time. The characters grew, changed, in many (heartbreaking) cases, died… and in a final flashback, it was even revealed what happened years later, when their own children were Hogwarts age.

But only the most devoted fans can remember the first and last thing that each of these main characters said in the films – which, in many cases, are not the same as their first or last lines in the books. Like plenty of other tweaks that WB made to the franchise, some of these may surprise book fans, but all of them reveal something about the character’s journey in the films.

10 Fred & George Weasley

He’s not Fred, I am! Honestly, woman, you call yourself our mother. – You ok Freddy? Yeah. Me too.

Fred and George Weasley may technically be two characters, but it is almost impossible to consider them separately. And both their first and last lines work together, because these two brilliant young men were always, always together… until they couldn’t be. Their first line comes as Harry spots the Weasleys getting onto the platform, and Fred and George are teasing their mother about which is which. It’s a perfect set up for the pranksters, but their final line shows how far they have come. It’s quieter, more solemn, but it still shows how they are everything to each other, as they try and reassure each other before the Battle of Hogwarts.

9 Professor McGonagall

Good evening, Professor Dumbledore. Are the rumors true, Albus? – I’ve always wanted to use that spell

For a character with as many incredible lines as Professor McGonagall, her first is a little bit of a disappointment. She appears when Dumbledore is leaving Harry with the Durselys, and asks him about the ‘rumors’ (that Voldemort is dead, but so are the Potters). Her final line, though, is one of her best in the entire franchise, as she shows her softer, funnier side, giggling that she always wanted to use the spell to bring the guardians of Hogwarts alive. It’s a moment of levity in a serious scene, and it is absolutely perfect.

8 Neville Longbottom

Trevor! – Harry’s heart did beat for us, for all of us, and it’s not over!

Neville’s first line is also something of a let down, as he leaps forward to grab his wayward toad when the students first arrive at Hogwarts. It sets him up as a bit of a bumbling joke, which isn’t entirely incorrect, at first.

However, Neville’s final line is one of the most powerful in the films, and it shows how far he has come. From the nervous boy who lost a toad, Neville becomes the young man who stands up to Voldemort, and rallies the troops when it seems like all hope is lost.

7 Hagrid

Professor Dumbledore, Sir. Professor McGonagall. – Harry…

For such a huge character, Hagrid’s first and last lines are both surprisingly short. His first is when he arrives with Baby Harry to leave with the Dursleys, and he simply greets Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall. His last, though, is barely a line, as he sees Harry. In both, though, Hagrid is defined by the people around him, which suits the loyal half-giant.

6 Dumbledore

I should have known that you would be here…Professor McGonagall. – Of course it’s happening inside your head, Harry. Why should that mean it’s not real?

Fans may be surprised to remember that Dumbledore’s last line is in the final film, although his death comes long before that. However, when Harry sacrifices himself, he meets ‘Dumbledore’ in a form of temporary afterlife, and the two have a conversation about everything that has happened. His final line is, in fact, one of his most-quoted ones. His first is a little less memorable, but still perfectly suited to the character, as he seems to know what is going on without having to be told.

5 Voldemort

Use the boy. – I killed Snape!

For such a major character, both Voldemort’s first and last lines are surprisingly short. The first time he appears is when he was on the back of Quirrell’s head, and he tells him to ‘use’ Harry to find out how to get the stone. It’s a creepy and incredible moment, and one that sets up Voldemort’s obsession with Harry, as well. His final line is one of frustration, as he struggles to understand why the Elder Wand still won’t accept him as a master.

4 Draco Malfoy

It’s true then, what they’re saying on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts. – It’s powerful, but it’s not the same. It doesn’t quite understand me. Know what I mean?

Draco goes through a huge amount of character development throughout the series, loses his certainty in himself, struggles, and battles it out with Harry time and time again. He first meets Harry when they arrive at Hogwarts, and he immediately tries to both lord it over Harry and suck up to him.

His final lines, sadly, don’t show how far he has come, as he is speaking to Harry about his wand in the Room of Requirement, before attacking him. Instead, his final moment – when the adult Draco quietly nods to Harry on the Hogwarts platform – shows far more how he eventually changed.

3 Ron Weasley

Excuse me, do you mind? Everywhere else is full. – I’m just saying, that’s the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand in the world. With that, we’d be invincible.

Ron has some incredible moments throughout the Harry Potter franchise – but neither his first or last lines are necessarily counted among them. Initially, he ends up sitting with Harry just because he couldn’t find another seat, and neither of them could know how close they would become. It does show, however, that Ron has always been friendly, and was never overly concerned about getting to know Harry because of his fame (maybe because of his generosity with chocolate frogs, though…). His final line is to Harry, as he decides what to do with the Elder Wand.

2 Hermione Granger

Has anyone seen a toad? A boy named Neville’s lost one. – “We”?

Hermione’s opening scenes paint her as an insufferable know-it-all – intentionally so, of course! However, her very first line is actually trying to be helpful. Although she does seem to be looking down on Neville for losing his toad, she is still trying to help find it, and that’s Hermione to a T. She knows that she knows better, but she is still going to be there and help. In the end, though, her final line sees her giving up control (a huge change in character for her), as she and Ron ask Harry what he will do with the Elder Wand, and she corrects Ron on the ‘we’ in ‘what are we going to do’ – knowing that this is entirely Harry’s decision.

1 Harry Potter

Yes, Aunt Petunia. – Ready?

For the central character of the franchise, Harry’s first and last lines aren’t particularly noteworthy, surprisingly enough. His first line, obeying Aunt Petunia, definitely works to set up his position in the family, and his resignation with his lot in life, and that definitely makes sense from a storytelling perspective. But looking back on it, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about the line in and of itself. His final moments, however, are more impactful, as he reassures his son on his first day of school at Hogwarts. The entire speech is more meaningful, as he reveals to the audience that his son is named ‘Albus Severus’, and reminds him of how it doesn’t matter which house he is in, as it’s all about who he is. That final official line, though, is just the end of the bigger speech, and pales in comparison.
